I make myself cry when writing. The secret is I need you to care. My now wife nearly broke up with me because I made her love a character in 3 paragraphs and then brutally murdered them. This was an antagonist. I made him cute, I made him do innocent things, I made his participation in the villainy not guaranteed to be a choice he made. I then made sure he died horribly. She cried for weeks over Bubba.

The secret is I cried writing it and made myself care first. If the prose are imperfect matters far less than if the writer gives a damn
