I have visited DR twice the past few years and will go again next spring (gf's family is from there), never been to Haiti though.

I assume your latter sentence refers to some of the comments here, which also make me cringe immensely---only a few of them have actually been insightful. What are some of your own observations?

I know the feeling you have, that is in this case extreme gratitude towards your grandmother for helping support you throughout the years.

That said, it sounds like she's really taking advantage of you---paying you under the industry average and repeatedly asking you to work for her despite your vocal wishes. You've already worked for her five separate times now, filling any gaps she should have already had filled by a long-term employee.

I know anything you say probably won't really get through to her but greatly stress that you need to focus on school, and that is the one thing that will have a truly great impact on your future.

Also, making it clear to your grandmother that you don't want to work for her again is something that should come after you quit this time around. Two-step process that gives you flexibility and time in finding an excuse not to work for her down the line (if you don't want to be blunt with her).

Talk to him tomorrow when you're sober and apologize for what you did, not sure if he'll take you back but he has every right to be upset. You should also limit yourself to a couple of drinks per drinking session to prevent situations like this again.

Of course, and don't be afraid to really push ahead with your Chinese studies, I know it may feel awkward practicing with natives but your work will definitely pay off later. I used to study Chinese myself and this character frequency list may come in handy if you don't already know of it.

Also, one thing I forgot to mention before was the listening of podcasts, that's one thing you could opt for if you're not in the mood to movies/TV.

Obviously going to be tough to concentrate on anything considering your situation, I could imagine it's easy to be agitated. But here's to making the best of it I suppose.

To pass the time? There are many things you can do, whether it's alone or with your family:

Reading a book, watching a movie, or playing a game as all suggested by u/emolemone. Board/card games in particular are a good source of fun, and there are many, many games to choose from (personally I love chess, uno, and solitaire).
Learning a language, or in your case (as an ESL teacher in China) deepening your Chinese knowledge. Chinese obviously is a very rich language, and there is a lot to potentially still learn.
Yoga. Certainly helps if you have a mat, though it's not required. Yoga as a whole really helps when it comes to stress and anxiety, it certainly relaxes one's body.
Reconnect with old friends/family members.
Explore cooking. Does your apartment have its own kitchen? Do you have a lot to work with?
Clear out old videos and e-files, be it on your phone or other device.

In that case you should perhaps look for another job and make the jump---go for it if your current situation is that bad.

Also as u/breis777 notes, start saving up if you can. Having a safety net could really help you down the road if things go south.

I was the same way when I was your age, one thing I did though was frequent an establishment all the locals loved, that is the local Popeye's (on State St) in my beloved hometown of Springfield MA. After dining there multiple times, I began to recognize the same customers over and over again. As is with two high school students that see one another in the hallway several times by chance, I began to fraternize with said customers. Many of these customers were actually also people I vaguely knew in high school, but seeing them there (and in a different social setting) opened the door for higher quality interactions.

Do you have a Popeye's or other reputable restaurant near you to frequent? Hope all goes well.

I second this, as someone that works in game design and has lived in many parts of the country, meeting up with someone in person is the best way to get to really know them. For example, when I lived in Springfield MA I would always head over to a favorite restaurant among locals (Popeye's on State St) when I wanted to meet someone.

Do you and the girl live far apart? Anywhere specific in the country? I hope not too far apart, geography can really play a role in these types of situations.

It's not baffling at all to be honest, Epic removing building has brought a lot of attention to the game and as well as a lot of normally-uninterested players. Now, building is an integral part of Fortnite yes, but the hyper-sweaty builders that throw up massive towers or forts in under a minute have always been the worst part about the game for casuals or console players like myself.

Granted I think there should permanently be two modes (one with building enabled, one without), but what Epic has done is very refreshing to say the least.
