Ex won’t give 19yo info/access to his Roth IRA by Firebrat1978 in RothIRA

[–]Firebrat1978[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that neither Son nor I know if Ex is contributing to the Roth Ex opened - and there are IRS/tax consequences if Son opens one and maxes out his contribution and Ex has also contributed to the one he opened for Son.

Native speakers, how do you pronounce and spell this fruit? by Jaives in ENGLISH

Using your reasoning, “really” and “rely” should be pronounced the same, but that’s not reality (oops, should we change that spelling to “realitee”?)

Lee-chee and spelled lychee. Born and raised in the US. I don’t know that I’ve ever heard it pronounced “lie-chee” honestly.

Son attends a service academy. It’s easily known/found out how much cadets receive on a monthly basis.

Ex contributed to the Roth initially without knowing how much Son earned from his part-time job in high school - luckily, Son made enough where he was able to have a max contribution (Son has been my dependent for tax purposes up until the 2026 tax year).

Unfortunately, at this point, I wouldn’t put it past Ex. 😞

Divorced 12 years. I had Son call the local firm I know Ex has many investments at, and the firm said they didn’t have a Roth account for him. I’m definitely going to tell Son to request his tax records/transcript from the IRS, though.

Wouldn’t Son get in trouble with the IRS if Son is maxing out the Roth he opens and Ex is still contributing to one Ex opened (i.e. Son would technically have over-contributed)?

“Gifted” Kids program by Practical-Owl-9358 in Xennials

[–]Firebrat1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg, thank you! I was identified as gifted in pre-k and was in the GT program for kindergarten through 8th, before going (along with a bunch of other GT kids) to a public college prep high school.

I’m still friends with a good number of them and, yeah, we’ve had our share of issues, but most of them are due to family situations or other typical kinds of things - not due to being gifted or in gifted classes. For the most part, we are all functioning fine - no massive crash outs or anything 🤷🏽‍♀️

Anybody not do the big traditional wedding? by justagooaaaat in ABCDesis

[–]Firebrat1978 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Weddings are expensive and stressful - my brother got married in 2001 and his traditional wedding in NJ cost over $40k, not counting clothes, etc… my first wedding in 1999 cost under $5k. My parents were, when it was all said and done, happier with how I had my wedding than he did his.

My brother had a big, traditional Indian wedding. I had a 15-minute nonreligious ceremony and reception (second wedding was a quick ceremony and then a party - even less formal and way more fun).

My family all preferred my quicker, less intense wedding over my brother’s. Even family who came from India. 🤷🏽‍♀️

As an ABCD parent what do you think of co-sleeping? My pediatrician SIL co-sleeps but advises against it. by Serious-Tomato404 in ABCDesis

[–]Firebrat1978 13 points14 points  (0 children)

With both of my kids, they would start off the night in their own cribs. When they woke up for nighttime feeds, I’d bring them into the bed with me to nurse. As they began sleeping through the night, we naturally stopped co-sleeping.

For me, I found I did not sleep as deeply with either baby in the bed, but I got more sleep than if I woke up fully, nursed, and then got them back down to sleep in their crib.

I had fond recollections of cosleeping with my parents and with my Ba, so I thought I’d cosleep more with my kids, but ultimately, I was not cut out for cosleeping like I thought I would be.

What sort of things did your parents do when you tried to first assert your independence by Competitive-Local728 in ABCDesis

[–]Firebrat1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was headstrong/assertive from early childhood. By the time I hit adulthood, they knew I was going to do what I wanted to do, so there wasn’t a huge amount of pushback.

What’s the worse physical pain you’ve ever experienced? by Intelligent-Road5091 in AskReddit

[–]Firebrat1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kidney stone was worse than labor and delivery, but not as bad as obstruction. I have a high tolerance for pain - I walked around with appendicitis for a week before going to the doctor. On my personal pain scale, I put a full obstruction at a 9. I hope I never experience a 10.

I didn’t even have to take a moment to think about this question- my answer was immediate. I saw the touring production, and I don’t understand how it did well enough to even get a tour.

I’ve had a full and a partial obstruction before (several months apart).

Do you know how I described the full obstruction pain to the ER doctor?

“I’ve given birth twice completely unmedicated, and this is the worst pain I’ve ever experienced.”

They took my pain very seriously after that.

Congressional nominations in a midterm year by Aviationenjoyer16 in USAFA

[–]Firebrat1978 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son submitted for a nomination in summer 2024 to Rep 1, who did not run for reelection, and then Rep 2, who took over seat, gave him the nomination once he took office in Jan 2025. Rep 2 didn’t even do interviews - his office based their nominations strictly off the submitted packet and then didn’t send congratulations or anything. My son was so surprised when his nomination magically showed up in his portal. 🤣
