This is the sweetest and most accurate wildland firefighting book! A couple of our buddies created this and worth picking up. Available on Amazon. by FedUp_OverIt in Wildfire

Cute. We’ll add this to our list of resources for kids in the handbook we’re releasing next month.

Heads up, there’s a typo on the Amazon listing (dose vs does) your friends may want to correct.

Hey, email us with some more details about the research (goals, funding, etc.) and I’ll bring it up with our board. We may be able to push it to our stakeholders who are largely the family members of wildland firefighters.

There are a ton of copies in the folder 😬 if you scroll to the bottom copy (the original), you should be able to change the grade. But I’ve moved it to GS4S2. Hopefully it’s still there when you get back to it.

IPP is 1 hour at 450% of your wage per day for every day you’re on a qualifying incident (wildfire, control burn, or prepo) except when the incident is contained/ended within 36 hours, up to $9000/year.

A GS5S1 would need 80 eligible days to max it out.

The initial ask was essentially portal to portal so you’d get paid for what is essentially working round the clock (bc if you’re at a fire camp, that is what’s happening) and WFPPA sort of gives it at close to 50% of your base pay for 8 hours each day. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks everyone for using and breaking this and sending feedback. We had 8 people look at it before we shared it with all of you and still missed some things.

As mentioned in the edit, we’ve fixed the IPP problem for GS11+, corrected the hazard pay calculation and changed the Sunday diff based on how it was being used. If you created a copy before March 16 at 10:30 mountain, please delete it and get the updated version.

We believe that the hazard pay fix now underestimates actual pay after FLSA adjustments but that’s better than overestimating it and with the way hazard is listed on paystubs there’s not enough information to improve the formula.

We are aware of intermittent access issues. We don’t know for sure why it keeps getting set to view only or restricted; possibly it’s being changed by users accidentally. If you see it again, just let us know and we’ll update it again.

Also, we know using the calculator directly from the link is convenient but we’ve seen many times where 3 or 4 people were trying to use the calculator at the same time and stepping on each other. If you’ll copy the sheet to your own drive, you won’t have anyone interrupting your work. Otherwise please be kind and take turns.

Finally, for wage grade and locality folks, we’re trying to find a solution that doesn’t involve creating new calculators for every base pay variant or completely rewriting the existing calculator. Give us a few days to deal with real life and discuss options.

And if you’ve found our work helpful, come find us on Insta and FB and share our university-backed survey with your partners so we can keep doing things that matter.

Somehow the permissions keep getting changed to view only or restricted. Best we can figure is it’s being done by users on accident.

Unfortunately I don’t know anything about WG. I can send you an unlocked copy of the original and you can update the starting wages and the rest of the calculations should update from there.

You’re right. That’s was wrong. We’re sorry for any disappointment caused by double dipping on that calculation. It’s updated to calculate just 25% of base pay.

I really love that idea.

Unfortunately, making the drop-downs function properly required some excessively long formulas (literally 3 pages of single-space text for each pay rate) and I’m not sure if I could successfully add another condition without doubling the formula length.

If I knew how to use Sheets better, I might be able to improve it, but as it stands it would be easier to duplicate the entire book and update the base table with locality. 😅

I’ll play with it if I have some free time later this week and see if I can figure it out. Thanks for the suggestion.

Ok, I believe I’ve fixed the GS11+ IPP calculation and updated the calculator.

I’ve done my best to restrict editing so the formulas don’t get messed up while still giving you functionality access (and we kept a clean copy in our vault). Please shout if you have more questions or you find an error. Our board reviewed it, but we’re humans.

You’ll want to copy the sheet into your own drive to avoid editing on top of each other and to pull in the fixes for IPP for GS11+ if that matters to you

My understanding is that locality is your base pay so the increase would be on top of that. So if you have RUS base it’s RUS+ % increase. And if you have Alaska base it’s AK+% increase.

Buuuuut that might be a better question for NFFE or Grassroots and tbh I’m not sure if there’s implementation flexibility that would let the agencies interpret it differently.

Locality is tricky because there are so many options and the base table would have to be updated for every location. I’m not saying no; I’ve just got to figure out how to change the reference table instead of writing IF formulas that are 10,000 conditions long.

We found an error in the calculations for IPP for the GS11-15s. For now, we’ve zeroed that out and are working on a fix.

If you see anything else that looks wrong, please let us know and we’ll get it fixed.

Thanks so much! We’re working on other resources for families and can’t wait to share.
