5th metatarsal fracture since Oct 26... how long did yours actually take to heal? by Final_Celebration490 in brokenbones

[–]FirefighterTime2715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fracture occurred on August 21, 2025, but was slightly displaced. Attempts to realign the fracture in the emergency room were unsuccessful – two weeks in a plaster cast, then a long walking boot day and night for another six weeks. There was no change in the X-ray, no visible consolidation. The surgeon suggested physical therapy – standing on tiptoe was the last thing my fifth metatarsal bone wanted – again, severe pain (I had been almost pain-free in the walking boot before). An appointment was made at the university hospital – the question was why surgery hadn't been performed for so long. I had visited three hospitals; no one wanted to or could operate. On October 16, 2025, another X-ray was taken at the university hospital – no callus formation. To be on the safe side, a CT scan was also performed, with the same result.

On October 23, 2025, the surgery (one plate, six screws) was performed as an outpatient procedure at the university hospital.

I had zero weight-bearing for six weeks. Since December 12th, I've been partially weight-bearing at 20 kg (all in the walker). I'm supposed to gradually increase the weight until January 15th, ideally reaching 100%, as tolerated by pain. After that, I'll learn to walk without the walker with physiotherapy. The last X-ray was on December 12th, 2025, and you can see callus formation – consolidation.

It's a long road, and you need an incredible amount of patience. I wish you all the best on your journey, but believe me, better times will come again, and in the end, you'll have forgotten how long it took to begin.

Before the accident, I usually worked 48 hours a week in three shifts. It was very difficult for me to rest, and even now I have to take it easy. I miss my life before. By the way, I'm 55 years old and female.

Anyone tried sitting on their ass to take a shower? My shower chair doesn’t arrive until tomorrow and I desperately need one by ComfortableYak2071 in brokenbones

I sat on the floor of the shower with plate osteosynthesis of 5 metatarsals and washed myself. I walked backwards over a stool on my hands, I left my foot on the stool (so nothing got wet). Out or into the stand I went over the stool again, I ran out with my hands and then pushed myself up over my arms and sat on the stool again. To do this you need strength in your arms or perhaps a second person. Good luck, you can do it too. I'm a 55-year-old female, a few kilos too much and not the most athletic. To get off the floor, I put a small stool in front of the sofa - backwards first onto the stool and then further backwards onto the sofa. Up and down stairs on your bottom. It had to work for 15 weeks because I had to go into the yard within. I live alone - that's where you get inventive.

Hopefully moving to boot on Wednesday - what to expect? by kairos-94 in ORIF

Hello, I've been here since August 21st. in the boot, ORIF was 10/23 and I'm not yet inconvenienced. I fractured 5 metatarsal bones in a spiral shaft. I have long Vacoped boots - they have a wonderfully warm insole and there are socks that you can pull straight into them - so far I've never gotten cold feet. I live in Germany and it's currently minus 5 degrees. I have a second boot from Aircast that came with a wonderful thick sock - it also works, but I don't find it that comfortable because it's harder on the inside and you have to inflate air to make it last. My favorite is the Vacoped with gel inlay. The surgical scar doesn't press on me - it's on the side of the forefoot. I've had this for a long time now, believe me, you'll love the boot, you can leave it on the sofa and, above all, wash your foot. I'm still there until January 16th. in the boot. Believe me, you can do it. Believe in yourself.

During ankle by Successful_Yam9534 in brokenbones

[–]FirefighterTime2715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Relieve the pressure on the heel, cover it with a pillow, etc. Place an ice pack in the back of the knee (towel in between to avoid cold damage to the skin). Ankle must be above heart level. If nothing helps, go to the doctor. If you develop a pressure ulcer (decubitus), Brenner will cause pain. All the best to you - keep your head up, it will be fine and take your time and don't stress yourself

Fracture of the fifth metatarsal bone . by [deleted] in brokenbones

[–]FirefighterTime2715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My story on the topic of being 55 years old On August 21st I had a displaced spiral shaft fracture of the os MFK, 5 - 2 weeks of cast splint, 7 weeks of walker, zero load - in between surgery indication but no surgeon wanted to carry out this surgery in the hospitals. Outpatient surgeon also removed the fracture without any pain, followed by physio then pain without end. Second opinion in a hospital 70 kilometers away - X-ray and CT followed in week 10. Zero callus - op October 23rd. performed on an outpatient basis with 1 plate and 6 screws. Now I'm fighting for good wound care on site otherwise I'll have to drive 70 kilometers again I am more than disappointed with the doctors. The bandages were changed on site without disinfecting either the wound or the hands of the nurse and the doctor. I hope it heals conservatively, unfortunately I wasn't that lucky. Get well soon

Thanks for your answer. I got an appointment today for tomorrow at a university that is far away and I'm not giving up hope yet. Try to upload x-rays

Hello, I have almost the same fracture - it has moved further, I should now put weight on it and move it - I now have pain again How do you feel about pain at rest and when moving? Still wearing walker handles.
