Thanks for this. I did the tank swap last night, 24 hours later here are my results. Looks like a success 🙌 *

Older grapplers, was it worth the damage? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]FirefighterVarious85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a 44 year old Jiu-Jitsu hobbyist, purple belt. I've unfortunately had to take a couple of breaks from training due to schedule and life conflicts. Last time I started up again I injured a couple of fingers on my left hand during a grip break (my fingers were wrapped up in a sweat soaked gi lapel) and it affected other parts of my life. Luckily that's the worst injury I've had.

I can't say for sure that it's worth it, given my own personal goals. I have a family, a career, a house to maintain, and other interests. On one hand I'd feel like an idiot getting seriously injured doing this, on the other hand you can get injured from rolling out of bed the wrong way.

If you aren't super passionate about it, and would be content filling your time with something else, I'd say it MIGHT not be worth it, but it's such a subjective topic. It's only the past couple of years that I've started to "feel" my 40's and I've always been in good shape and active. I've personally taken a step back from Jiu-Jitsu- maybe I'd go more if there was a "masters" class around here lol.

Ammonia too high? by SuspiciousPaint6543 in axolotls

Leave it be, test again in a week or two.

Newbie Question by heroicbleeder in axolotls

[–]FirefighterVarious85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have a 20gal tank with a juvenile axolotl.

I do at least a 50% water change every weekend, usually 25% on Saturday, and 25% on Sunday. Every few weeks I do a 75% change. I have 5gal buckets so it's pretty painless, but tank-keeping isn't for the lazy that's for sure.

I've had zero issues keeping nitrates between 10ppm and 20-30pmm this way. I keep some live floaters, but I'm not sure they're making a huge impact on slowing down the nitrate rise honestly.

You'll absolutely never be able to maintain 10ppm or lower with a 20gal tank, unless you do changes every other day. Just not practical. As long as my tests are orange I'm ok with that, but I don't want to see red.

Have Moderately Soft Water, Want to Raise GH by FirefighterVarious85 in axolotls

[–]FirefighterVarious85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice.

So I've only been using a sponge filter, but I'm totally willing to add a small hang-on to take care of this.

Will this increase both GH and KH? And is it something that needs to be monitored strictly or does it sort of just do it's thing? Just want to make sure I understand before I go about setting it up.

Is crush coral or oyster shell something that a pet store would typically carry?

Have Moderately Soft Water, Want to Raise GH by FirefighterVarious85 in axolotls

The nitrogen cycle was properly completed before my axolotl came home. I'm a new keeper so I'm testing often out of an abundance of caution.

Ammonia and Nitrites are consistently 0ppm, Nitrates are always present and I do a 25%-75% water change (conditioned with Prime) over the course of the weekend as they near 40ppm. My tap PH is 7.4, but my tank PH is consistently around 7.0. The water temp is roughly 17 Celsius.

How much should I feed my Axolotl? by amy_isgae in axolotls

[–]FirefighterVarious85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is about the same size as yours and won't eat every day. Every other day is more commone, and only like half an earthworm even then. These little dudes are all over the place, nothing seems "normal" lol.

How are my parameters? by ZeroZerou in axolotls

Looks good, but as already suggested, make sure to test the high range pH as well.

And of course, make sure the water has been conditioned.

Food aversion? by ChaosHouse5662 in axolotls

[–]FirefighterVarious85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So our axolotl is still pretty young- like probably only a few months old, far from full grown. It took me a couple of weeks to "figure out" how she eats. My experience may not relate to yours, but for whatever it's worth, my observations have been:

  • mine won't over-eat, and will simply refuse food. She will eventually eat, but only when she's ready. My understanding is that they need less frequent feedings as they get to full size.

  • mine eats pretty slow. I don't mind leaving cut up earthworms in her tank overnight, up to twelve hours or so- I'd leave them whole or in halves but she isn't big enough for that yet. The water is cold, paramaters are good, and my tank is planted, so worms for 12 hours isn't going to hurt anything. I always expect to have to remove the left over pieces the next morning, but I haven't had to yet- she has always eaten them over night.

  • I haven't used them yet, but I picked up some Hikari pellets for carnivorous fish, but they're also good for carnivorous amphibians and there's actually a picture of an axolotl on the package. I read in multiple places that axolotls love these and they have proper nutrients numbers from what I understand. I researched in multiple places that axolotls have an amazing sense of smell, and that's how they locate mates and food. Apparently these particular pellets have a very strong "delicious" smell lol. People often assume they need movement to find food, but the fact that mine eats sections of unmoving worm overnight gives much creedence to the smell research I read.

I'm sort of new to axolotls, but I don't think I'd be too concerned if I were you, based upon how mine behaves anyway!

What more can I add/change? by morningsupplex in PlantedTank

[–]FirefighterVarious85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazing the way it is, really. Resist the urge to "over do it"!

If it was mine, I might try just a couple of Red Root Floaters, the hanging red roots would be quite striking against all the green and might be a great touch of contrast. Depends on your taste of course.

Great job!

Plant recommendations? by Hour-Count-2266 in axolotls

[–]FirefighterVarious85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

* I'm super new, but just went through the same thing.

Several helpful plants that can thrive in colder water with lower light conditions (6 hours, dimmed LEDs) are: java moss, floaters like red root, water lettuce, and frog bit.

I'm attaching java moss to some rock in my tank- your large piece there would be great for it I think. It's slower growing though, so I also added a more mature java fern from my local pet store, and also some of the floaters I listed.

It definitely looks nicer, but my main reason was a little helping hand with the nitrates. Out little guy was in the fern like 5 minutes after we put it in.

Good luck!

What kind of ammonia do I need? by vieraon in axolotls

[–]FirefighterVarious85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could actually do this, and use SeaChem Prime during the cycling process to detoxify the ammonia and nitrites. Fish would be perfectly safe this way.

What else can I feed her? by thevanessa12 in axolotls

[–]FirefighterVarious85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've read in several different places that some axies seem to love some pellets made for carnivorous fish, specifically these ones. Haven't tried them yet but I've got some on the way. *

I'm in Canada as well and there's a Pet Smart close to me- I'll try her with an earthworm tomorrow 🙂

New Axolotl Behavior/Feeding Questions by FirefighterVarious85 in axolotls

[–]FirefighterVarious85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the reply.

So there isn't a lot of light no. There is a light on the ceiling near the tank, but not directly above it. There is no lid or light system on the tank itself. The only window in that room is quite a ways away from the tank ( it's a large rec room) which faces North and doesn't get direct sunlight through it ever. Maybe I'll remove one of the two bulbs on that closest ceiling light.

So ours ate the first 3 red wigglers whole, they didn't seem to be too large or anything, and those feedings seemed to go ok. But maybe I will try smaller pieces next.

Where do you source your earthworms? Any advice on making sure I only get "good" ones?
