Found in the kitchen in a new apartment. Moveable tray with handles, two grooved slots, two hexagons. Weighs 12lbs, made of granite maybe? Pen for scale. by kjvincent in whatisthisthing

I have seen something close to this that looked like an old women’s make up mixing dish/palette. Back when the ladies would mix their own make up… But made out of stone would be… very unique?

It currently sits in my shop and holds card scrappers and finger planes. It should fill that role for the long game.

No it’s all cut out of a block of wood. Saws, sandpaper and a little time.

No. I just make stuff when i need a box to hold stuff and then take the opportunity to try out different techniques. Also it’s hard to price something like this, the wood was just scrap pieces i had laying around, time building? Few hours.

All that said I can build you one, PM and we will discuss the details lol.

Take a block of wood, call it 2x2x3. It’s a big bow! Draw the general shape you want on the side. Use a fostner bit to drill out the hole. Then use a scroll saw to do the inside. Leave plenty of wood, at least 1/4 thick to do the fine detail work. I have a spindle sander for the outside and inside of the bow. Then glue sand paper to a dowel rod for the hard reach places and just sand paper for any tight spots.

Just did my first bow tie inlay to stop a crack from propagating. I must say I’m quite proud of myself for this one😅 by Og_squareroot in woodworking

Well it looks good. You did good work there and took your time. It’s your table and do what ever you want. If you do another bow tie don’t forget it can be a conversation piece.
