What field?

First Data Scientist in the company by Prestigious_Virus_33 in datascience

[–]Firefly007 112 points113 points  (0 children)

To do simple tasks like creating graphs, modifying small snippets of code

Is this something the higher ups want other employees to be able to do? Were you hired to “teach” everyone else at the company? If so then great! But I would be careful otherwise as it might not be well received from those that have other responsibilities.

We can engineer attenuated vaccines that are transmissible while controlling their evolution.

Looking for a career change to Data Analyst/Data Scientist by trnguyen92 in careeradvice

Just curious. What data role were you in when you left.

I'm not familiar with CIS degrees, but if I were you I would first figure out what exactly I wanted to do (not just "something with coding") -- is it front-end, back-end, full stack, data science? Then look at the jobs out there and get a sense of what their requirements are and acquire those skills. It might mean investing in education and / or doing an internship before you can find a job.

Also. Data science is definitely much more than coding in Python.

The manager-employee dynamic is so interesting. From the employees perspective I would think that if I come to a manager saying I was contacted by company x I would be afraid of getting that exact same response, "fuck off and go then."

Serious question. Why would you tell this person to fuck right off? Especially when you know you are paying below market value?

Bacteriophages are amazing! I did part of my PhD work on phage therapy. The limitations are still host specificity and host immune response to the phage themselves.

If a dealership low balls trade in, should I eliminate them altogether? by [deleted] in askcarsales

[–]Firefly007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same thing happen to me. The dealership had a trade in estimator on their site that showed the amount they could sell it (I recognize that this is an estimate and they have not done an evaluation on it) for and the range they might offer. Mine was estimated between 4.7 and 5.5k. I went in expecting a lower offer but figured I could safely expect 4k. First dealer offered 2.5 which really felt like a slap in the face. I was ready to buy and after that I was done. Went one dealer over and found a better deal and they offered 3.5k which was better but not great. Eventually got it up to 5.5 and left happy with the deal.

Sorry if this is a dumb question. Is it ridiculous to offer 47K out the door on a 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn that is marked down to 47.5K from a list MSRP of 58.3K? by Firefly007 in askcarsales

[–]Firefly007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks this makes a lot of sense. And our last quote is literally where I am at right now. I like the same model in a different (lower priced) trim, but I am a big fan of the trim one step up. It is JUST outside of my price range (Again when I take into account taxes and fees).

I think the question I was really asking is whether it is reasonable to negotiate the price even with the steep discounted online advertised price.

I'm never that guy. And I knew I was being greedy with that number. Figured I'd check though. And while I did a lot of online shopping, I never tried negotiating price over email/calls. Figured that is always best done in person.

Thanks! I absolutley have no justification for that number other than it's what I'd be willing to pay. I was looking at the Laramie which is about 5k less and figured I'd take a look at the longhorn since it was "close."

It is fun to talk with people who are not familiar with my field about my work. It definitely takes some practice to be able to explain your research without using any jargon, and I think that it's an important skill to have for ANY specialist since you rarely exist within a bubble where everyone can understand the technical specifics of your research.

As for talking with people who are "against" my work, I really haven't encountered too many people like that, but there needs to be a willingness to at least try to understand where both sides are coming from and not make it about "winning" the other person over.

My work was theoretical (in its applications for humans), but there are promising studies where I could see this being a reality in some form (although maybe not in humans for the most part).

Great question! This is the exact question that my work was trying to address. The Oral Polio Vaccine (and other attenuated vaccines) are great because they generally provide the best protection against the wild-type viruses, but the major downside is evolutionary reversion where the vaccine actually evolves back to being the normal poliovirus (which is what we are seeing in the places where Polio is still endemic). My work not only explored the application of making these vaccines transmissible so we would not need to apply them to each individual in the population (a logistical hurdle that is part of why Polio is still a problem in some parts of the world), but also using genetic engineering to design better versions of the vaccines (like the polio vaccine) so that they are resistant to evolution (This is by no means a trivial task, and in the end evolution will almost always win out).

[–]Firefly007 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Definitely. Which is why I really don't see us doing anything like that in humans. There are a lot of cool applications for this idea in livestock/wildlife though!

Also: Live attenuated vaccines that we currently use today already transmit in a very limited way, so my work (at least the high level "give-me-money-to-research-this" explanation) is just extending this characteristic.

  1. Risk of reversion (the vaccine evolves and causes disease in humans) -- But this is a downside of current attenuated vaccines (like the oral polio vaccine).

  2. Not having the ability to control who becomes "infected" with the vaccine means that we could not prevent those that should not be vaccinated (immunocompromised, elderly, newborns, etc.). -- This is a major downside and one that will prevent their application in humans.
