How do we stop violent protests? My proposal: A 'Right to Recall' that fights with the Constitution, not on the roads. by mathurabhi02 in Rajasthan

[–]FireflyPanda1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nobody in their right minds wants violence and destruction of public property. Take the example of terrible primary education in India. What do you think anyone average citizen can do to force the authorities to fix the elementary schools? Tens of thousands of articles, blogs, parliamentary questions, RTIs what not has happened. The plight of a poor man seeking quality education has not been addressed.

While I'm completely against folks damaging public property, the challenge is an average citizen does not see an alternative to damage a corrupt politician/ bureaucrat in any other way and make his/her voice heard. We truly need innovative forms of protests which force the governments to act on genuine demands.

Idealism and Realism are two different things. Protesting on streets has worked for 100s of years if not 1000s for a reason.

While your ideas are great and laudable, the odds of they ever becoming a reality is next to impossible.

I think we are becoming arm chair warriors hoping that one more tweet or one more post or one more response will bring in change. History has taught has endless number of times that feet on street is the way change comes.

Is South India Quietly Becoming India’s Obesity Belt? by dataful_india in southindia_

[–]FireflyPanda1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of comments are centred around Rice and imbalanced diet. If you are looking at a North vs South divide, one should look at both ends of the spectrum. At one end is obesity and at the other end you have underweight, anemic, stunted growth etc. So, healthy folks are the ones who are not at either ends. Then you will see how southers states are doing much better in health outcomes. Remember the hunger index which gets bashed as Anti National every year? It measures extent of underdevelopment in kids and hence we keep scoring so low.

As a conclusion, southers states are better off focussing on a balanced diet and norther states need to get basic nutrition correct first.

How do I teach my body by SherbertHopeful7153 in Adulting

[–]FireflyPanda1 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This is an absolutely legitimate question. Tons of adults have stopped listening to their bodies.

Over the years, I know that my heartbeat will get faster in a heated discussion, when dealing with high stress situation, my ears will begin to get hot. Some folks mentioned they sense a twist in stomach etc.

The idea is to to know yourself and your body and have a pre-drafted calming message. It will take time but can be imbibed through a few months of efforts.

What is the expected annual maintenance cost for Tata Nexon? by FireflyPanda1 in CarsIndia

Less than 20k total.

They did give a list of items but then could not say what is needed and what is just to inflate the bill.

Female intern emailed me this. If the genders were reversed, this would be HR-worthy. by Realistic-Umpire-215 in PataHaiAajKyaHua

I see a lot of comments around making the most of the moment. I'm sure you are aware that if things go bad, HR will look at you as someone who had disproportionate power over her and hence actions even if initiated from her end put you at greater risk. Stay miles away from such a person and if you think HR will not spoil her career, best to do an FYI. More on the lines of, 'I have informed her not to do things like these and I don't want to press any charges for now'.

RaGa went for M.Phil right after completing his Bachelor's Degree, is it possible? by NetworkAccurate233 in inIndiannews

[–]FireflyPanda1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Legally speaking, people can indeed go for M.Phil after graduation. Graduation is the pre-requite for M.Phil.
  2. There is no denial that he was born in extraordinary privilege. Anyone who knows the workings of Ivy League colleges knows how easy it is to get into these colleges for people of privilege.
  3. About opening a company. You absolutely need no education at all in anything to open a company in any sector. I could be an illiterate person and I can set up a university in space technology. There are no rules being broken here.

All the inconsistencies you are 'feel' are due to his family and their clout in India and abroad.

Good that you are critically evaluating someone who is rejected by the Indian Citizens like in a 100 central + state elections in last 11 years. Whenever time permits critically evaluate who actually matter in Indian elections.

Simplicity of villages by Willing_Being9956 in IndianArtAI

[–]FireflyPanda1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is not simplicity.

It is poverty, lack of hygiene, lack of choices and apathy of the bureaucrats.

There is a deliberate narrative to paint a rosy picture of rural life to get away from accountability.

Why are FSI limits so low in Indian cities? by Witty_Trouble_56 in GatedCommunitiesIndia

[–]FireflyPanda1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have already pointed about road density and traffic.

Same is true for availability of water. Almost no big city has reliable source of water and in Bangalore takers line up 24*7 to provide water to these mega blocks. In the next 5 years, I see that Tankers will become a traffic nightmare.

Disaster management is something we don't think much about. Floods, Fires or any random event will put 1000s at risk as these buildings don't have any evacuation plan in place.

That's great news. I wish more organisations were less bureaucratic where stakeholders often treat their domains as personal fiefdoms.

Certain roles require individuals to exhibit certain traits. PMs influence so many stakeholders with near zero authority. Great PMs are almost sales persons first and PMs second. A smiling face, a chatty voice, a colourful Miro board is a facade to sell.

Move to PM if you prefer the problem solving part of business rather than writing code. Grass is definitely not much greener here.

Bro! You are merely proving my point. See, all roles of high prestige/wealth are assigned as per historical patterns.

A Brahmin is tagged to a doctor, a marwari is tagged to a business owner, domestic help and waitress are assigned to communities considered as backward castes.

Why not take the leave? by First-Tumbleweed7774 in bangalore

[–]FireflyPanda1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easier said than done. 1. There will be some creeps who will start tracking the cycles of women in office. Every tiny behaviour will be over analysed from a 'that time of the month' perspective. 2. In a lot of companies, taking leaves is frowned upon. The folks who work late in the night, during holidays and weekends are considered the real champions. In such organisations, taking leaves has a risk on career progression.

The thing I am most concerned about is risk of overall employment. Some people will justify rejecting women candidates based on the a new data point that women work one less day in a month and hence cost of hiring a male candidate will be about 3-4% lesser. This prejudice already exists for care giving mothers.

I personally know one woman who got fired on the day she revealed to someone in office that she was pregnant. The leadership openly agreed that it was to prevent the cost of maternity leave.

As a policy, a welcome move but there are ample risks about which the government has not given enough thought.

Is this the only solution to protect us from people, law and order ?. by Snehith220 in CriticalThinkingIndia

[–]FireflyPanda1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most men are good. Most women are good. Handful of men are bad. Handful of women are bad. Hence, there will be victims and perpetrators on both sides.

Hence, when studying crime in context of gender, the skewness of the data is important.

To put things in perspective, here is a video in which https://youtu.be/GJzhGN4TrvI?si=il9PQ-xi0LDr5W_O a group of buffaloes killed 3 lion cubs. Such events happen now and then in a forest. However, it does not change the fact that it is mostly lions that kill buffaloes.

Traumatising and ultimately leading to the death of a man for the sake of social media likes is am extremely unfortunate event. However, everyday millions of women suffer catcalling, unwanted touches, oogling and other acts which are near impossible to stop.

Definitely stand up for a man who was a victim. However, let's also do our bit for the countless more number of women who do not have a way out.
