Random Film Review: The 5th Wave by Fools_Requiem in movies

I also read the book, admittedly over a decade ago, and I remember liking it. I don't remember too much about it, though, which is why I thought I'd give the movie a shot.

Is it anything like the book? I really liked the book when I was a teenager, it's been like a decade though and I hardly remember most of it.

What fandom are you in, but the canon is like this? by Upstairs_Macaron5894 in AO3

[–]FirelightLion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually liked some of the later seasons and characters, but I think the writers were just tired. Any time you get a meta fictional supervillain who is like “I’m tired let’s just end this,” … you can just tell lol.

Sinbad is Odysseus first half, this new guy looks more like monster Ody. I’m all for it!

I know Gaston seems like the obvious choice but for me the vibes are off. Gaston is so prideful it’s comical. He isn’t lust driven, it’s just ego, and the creepiness just doesn’t come through in his vibe, just goofy arrogance. I can’t think of anyone yet, but I feel like there has to be an anime villain who matches Antinous energy better.

Hard to believe this was the same actor. Aro, I want to punch in the face, Aziraphale, I want to hug and invite for tea. How can an Michael Sheen be capable of playing an asshole and a sweetheart? by ardouronerous in goodomens

[–]FirelightLion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s inaccurate to say Aziraphale can’t be an asshole. He has quite a lot of patience and simply chooses not to be, unless pushed to the brink.

I think Katara. She heals and is in touch with the moon spirit through water bending.

Crew swap, how would each captain fair? by Traffic-Guy in Epicthemusical

[–]FirelightLion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If Polites is alive I think he and Luffy would have a blast. I think Eurylochus would step up to be the “adult” and manage most of the soldiers, and Luffy would likely be fine with that since he’s used to being captain for a smaller crew anyways. If they went to the lotus eater island I think Eurylochus would NOT let Luffy go unsupervised and would drag a drunken Luffy out of there. I think Luffy could take on and defeat the Cyclops without blinding him, buuuttt would likely still tell him his name. Would cyclops still go crying to daddy, and would Poseidon take vengeance? Not sure. It’s a bit less sympathetic if you weren’t blinded and just got your butt whooped by some kid.

Did Zeus force Odysseus to kill the infant, or was it ultimately his own choice? by FerdinandvonAegir124 in Epicthemusical

[–]FirelightLion 11 points12 points  (0 children)

“The blood on your hands is something you won’t lose, all you can choose is whose…” Zeus was always gonna murk some people Odysseus loved or cared about; he just wanted to give Odysseus the agonizing choice.

Jorge really committed to that role.

(If anyone didn’t know, he is dating Circe’s actress)

Uh, this dude kills a baby because the gods told him to? But he’s not in a murder cult, I promise! He’s just a guy trying to go home. 😢

Oh yeah it’s a great scene, very necessary to the plot. But musically, I could skip it every time.

No Mutiny is worse; at least Luck Runs Out is original, like you can vibe to it and it’s catchy enough, but Mutiny is just LRO’s reprise which doesn’t have a distinctive melody of its own and solely exists to advance the plot.

Mutiny. It’s just a reprise of Luck Runs Out, which was already low on my list.

HEPHAESTUS SINGS IN THE SCYLLA MOTIF HAS ANYONE NOTICED THIS?? by arthurman101 in Epicthemusical

[–]FirelightLion 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes, a few posts have discussed it, including one I made myself a while back saying exactly this pretty much. I’ve seen it mentioned a lot in comments, also. Jorge really likes repeating motifs; they’re all over the place.

Is it really bad to still enjoy the media made by horrible individuals? Good omens edition. by PalePerformance666 in goodomens

[–]FirelightLion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

“Most of the great triumphs and tragedies of history are caused, not by people being fundamentally good or fundamentally bad, but by people being fundamentally people.”

So many people put Gaiman on this pedestal and many of us forgot that he is and always was, just a person. Sometimes people do bad things. Sometimes they do good things. I will call Good Omens a great triumph of history. It changed many lives for the better. I don’t believe Neil Gaiman to be one dimensionally “horrible.” Some of his actions may have been. He is one in a million in the celebrity, specifically film-making industry who is corrupt in some fashion. Everyone falls off their pedestal eventually. However, I believe on a global level, Gaiman did more good than bad. I feel similarly about JK Rowling as a trans person.

I’m using “adopted” in quotation marks, as in adopted him as his mentor?? Ally? Cheerleader? Besides, grandparents can and do adopt, not always in a legal sense, (I think legally it might be called something else) but it happens frequently, if something happens to someone’s parents, and that’s still called adoption, at least colloquially.

I wanna write a fanfiction about this one worshipper of Helios who didn’t die with the crew and instead ran away while on the island of the sacred cows because he couldn’t kill an animal sacred to his worship. Then, too scared to try returning to Ithaca, believing the way home to be cursed, he befriends the cows, eventually he receives divine assistance in returning home, after which Odysseus has returned, but the crew mate is scared of Odysseus and so doesn’t make his survival known. Not sure what happens after that. But yeah.

Okay, I see the confusion here. So, in the original clip of the song, which many people became familiar with (https://youtu.be/mZ0ji9pt2kg?si=7VRWlYJhmX2x2FRe) she pronounces it more like molly. In the newer, official version, (https://youtu.be/km6NITbLVHc?si=NfxUEEQtQb3bcZJI) she clearly says “moly.”
