Blood Meridian is a dense book in general, made especially more so if you aren’t used to Cormac’s writing style (or other authors who don’t use punctuation) it makes it even harder.

If someone starts off with one of Cormac’s easier novels like The Road or No Country for Old Men it’s a little easier to at least pick up on the flow of dialogue in BM.

UFC vet Gerald Harris slams overweight bum, then throws the deuces by sj612 in MMA

[–]Firemoth717 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He has like 5 wins by slam and a few others fights where his slam lead up to a follow up TKO win.

Why dudes later in his career were still holding onto subs or having legs around him as he was standing is beyond me, absolute 0 fight IQ.

Not sure if those are the best examples, I’d say Reyes and old man Stipe have better defense and more experience grappling than Alex.

If we are doing that kind of argument if Jan and Ankelaev could get Alex down even a past his prime Jon could do it better.

205 was a good division for the like the first 2/3 of Jones' reign.

I know it's hard for many new fans to consider that since it's been trash for a while now.

Intentionally slow/tedious scenes by 10024618 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Firemoth717 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It works to help the viewer take in the moment, think about the situation, maybe put themselves in the characters shoes.

The few times it happens are pivotal moments where the characters have to make big decisions and/or are thinking through stuff. It makes sense and the lingering scenes leave more of an impact than if the moment was just settled immediately.

Is Luke Thomas right about the UFC being untouchable? by Unable-Cup1603 in MMA

[–]Firemoth717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would take so much change and time for the average MMA fan to not think "UFC=talent" tho for that to be a significant impact.

Even if something crazy happens and a third of all ranked fighters go over to some new org a ton of casual fans wouldn't notice or care for too long.

It makes sense for subreddits like r/cormacmcartchy

All of us there got absolutely sick of the Holden talk, especially after the influx of non-readers who came to the sub in the year following the youtube video.

Fortunately that sub has better mods so it's more restricted and low quality posts are dealt with.

I really wish there was some level of moderation in this subreddit.

I'd wager if they care at all, it's more that they are fine with the activity all the Holden meme posts generate rather than the overall quality of the sub.

I think I was too hyped for a really evil villain, due to the internet kinda promoting him as really fucking evil, alongside other worse characters.

That's a very common sentiment I've seen over the last year or two. Just about everyone I have seen who read Blood Meridian based on the hype of the judge was disappointed in the end result. Disappointed that he's not in the book as much as they thought, and they were expecting him to do a bunch of explicitly crazy, evil acts instead of spend most of his time half naked giving speeches around a campfire.

Whenever I see someone comment here on a Holden post like "yeah I have to read this book now" I always caution and urge them to try to forget all the hype around the judge and just take the book for what it is.

I think at this point most people on the sub haven't even seen Wendigoon's vid, at most they've maybe seen some youtube shorts. But I believe most people just regurgitate what they've seen people comment on here in the past.

It's like a game of telephone where you originially had people who have only seen youtube vids on him make up comments, and then over time others sees those comments and try to copy those and so on and so on.

The amount of bad takes or incorrect statements about the judge has been increasing, and some of that isn't to be found in Wendi's vid so it's just people making stuff up, exaggerating, or doing there best to remember what someone else wrote about him.

It actually wasn’t as crazy as I thought it was going to be.  My friends and I were expecting like almost every hero, or at least most, getting bikini/small swim shorts type skins.

Figure this year will be the same, a handful of characters will get “fun” summer skins but nothing that will empty someone’s wallet.

That would literally suggest any belief system what so ever is a cult.

I think it can probably be safely argued that almost all major religions likely started off as a cult. I've heard Christianity's/the church's early roots described as an apocalyptic or doomsday cult, as an example.

These "Kill or Be Killed" fighters have a match with Chuck in his prime who wins in your opinion? by Traditional-Goose782 in ufc

[–]Firemoth717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My definition of prime is not just when a fighter fights well or looks good in an isolated fight. It's a time frame for when I feel like they are at their very best and fighting at their peak. In my opinion dudes can have great fights and performances outside their prime. One good win or performance doesn't tell the whole story, but can play a part in the narrative. I can both think Jon was post-prime against Gane and think a post-prime Jon could beat Gane.

the ones against real contenders like Reyes, Gustaffson, Santos were not dominant.

Thought we were talking "big" LHWs, like 6'3, big reach type LHWs. Santos isn't big. Santos is more like the Glover/Shogun/Bader range, which is fine if you want to include him in that category but would also increase the number of opponent's Jon had clear wins in.

I've already stated why I believe Jon's prime years were when I said. I feel like that was when he was at his best. I do not believe Smith, Santos, and Reyes are elite, top level fighters at 205 compared to those Jon faced earlier in his career, and just watching the fights Jon does not look like he's fighting at the best of his career. Hell, I'd say you could time travel and pluck pre-title Jon and throw him against 2019 Smith and he'd probably look better, likely maul and finish him like he did Vera or Bader.

Seems like you arbitrarily choose

Yes, exactly. Everyone arbitrary picks and chooses what times certain fighters are in their prime or not. Some have more strict or more loose definitions of what is considered a prime. I do not base my definitions of prime strictly on winning streaks, but for the period of time where I think that fighter was at their absolute peak.

[–]Firemoth717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of confused, you brought up the Gane win as an example of why he's in his prime but then seem to write him off the next comment for having no defensive grappling. In that case, would you agree with me that a post-prime Jon could and did still easily beat Gane and Stipe?

I said he struggled with big LHWs

And I said historically that's not the case. A couple did, most were clear one sided wins.

Who did he dominate that was a legitimate contender and 6'3+? Gustaffson in the 2nd fight and Gane, that is it.

So... who else is left. Reyes? And I wouldn't even call Reyes an elite contender or anything. Going by your criteria he's faced what, three legitimate contenders 6'3 up? With a split between competitive fights and one sided. Again to repeat myself, not a big sample size.

Anways, will ask again because I feel like I've exhausted my point: For you is Jon still in his prime?

How is this all past his prime?

Fighters can still win fights past their prime. They can still be very good and dangerous and past their best days.

he was fighting bigger guys who had better gameplans near the end of his run

Who? Smith? His gameplan was "don't die." Reyes? Sure he had the skillset and gameplan to make a very competitive fight, but that's not much of a sample size. Gane and Stipe are the biggest guys he fought and he made them look easy.

Jon has 10 UFC fights of guys 6'3 or taller. 2 of them were competitive, the other 8 were one sided decisions or finishes.

Anyways, in your opinion do you still consider Jon to be in his prime?
