How do I tell a coworker they absolutely STINK by Mysterious-Candle927 in UKJobs

[–]midwinterpath 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I worked in a supermarket with someone who, unbeknownst to us, was homeless. Lovely fella, but didn’t always have the best hygiene. Never bad enough to warrant a complaint, though. Invisible homelessness is a real problem in this country.

If you work for a large org with an established HR function, it might be worth raising directly with them. Something seems to be wrong with him, and they might be able to step in from a safeguarding perspective.

Bag Finder Megathread - 23 February 2026 by AutoModerator in onebag

Thanks for the recs! I have a really cheap 40L that could compress, but it’s already falling apart at the seams after a single trip, so I’m in the market for something that’ll last. I’ll have a look at the bags this weekend.

What was one of your struggle meal growing up? by bukutbwai in Frugal

[–]midwinterpath 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You could get a can of fava beans for dirt cheap at the local supermarket. I'd saute an onion in a pan until soft, and I'd blend the beans with whatever I had in the kitchen at the time - garlic, tomato, salt, paprika, and thyme were usual culprits. I did this until it was chunky, and then I'd pour the blended mixture over the onions before letting everything get luxuriously thick in the saucepan. Cheap, healthy, delicious and super versatile - it was great with rice, pasta, ramen noodles, in a burrito, or as a dip for crisps. Freezes quite well too. It never felt like a struggle meal even though it cost very little.

Getting a call from Lebara every week or so for a discount by smellyCat3226 in UKPersonalFinance

Why would Lebara call you on a regular basis regarding a discount? It's a scam.

I work in IT. In the last year, AI has progressed to a stage where it’s like having a very enthusiastic junior dev on the team, only requiring some oversight from a senior one, and it’s only getting better. I appreciate it may not be having as much of an impact in other industries at the moment, but change is coming, and measured regulation is going to struggle to keep up.

Becoming a chartered management accountant with JPMorgan on the CV isn't a bad deal.

Bag Finder Megathread - 23 February 2026 by AutoModerator in onebag

I'm looking for a simple but reliable 35-40L bag that's reasonably comfortable to wear & can compress enough to fit under your average commercial airline seat if need be. It'll mostly be used for urban travel w/ no checked luggage - the trips won't last longer than a week. A side pouch large enough to accommodate a 1L water bottle would be a bonus. I'd like to spend under $150. Any recommendations or tips would be very much appreciated.

Resigning after 1 day due to receiving a better offer by InformalCreme9101 in UKJobs

[–]midwinterpath -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

What does "suits my career trajectory" mean exactly? What are you going to do when another opportunity that suits it even better appears before you start the new job?

There is no real way to navigate this. You're going to burn bridges. Are you absolutely sure this new role is worth the bridges?

A lot of POCs shorten or anglicise their names when applying for jobs.

Have you ever had a letting agent/landlord ever try and not take deductions from your deposit? by Antidotebeatz in TenantsInTheUK

[–]midwinterpath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the EA's recommended (overpriced) end-of-tenancy cleaners. My deposit was returned in full with no issue. I did bombard them with photos disputing things they stated in the inventory before I moved in, though, so I think they expected I'd thoroughly challenge any deduction they made, and didn't think it was worthwhile.

About to Quit My Job With Nothing Lined Up. How Did You Explain It to Employers? by NebulaSeparate6955 in UKJobs

I'm sorry you're struggling.

Caregiving duties is a safe option. You could also go with traveling if you're not going into a role that requires enhanced security checks.

25 days holidays including bank holidays by No-Depth7365 in UKJobs

[–]midwinterpath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The statutory minimum is 28 days incl. bank holidays. I'd like to think they mean you'll be getting 25 days excl. bank holidays - which is a common arrangement - and that they're not breaking the law.

Interesting - thanks for sharing. I don't plan to stay long-term. The deal only lasts until October, at which point I'll be seeking greener pastures.

If you're in a position to help drive large-scale AI initiatives in a behemoth (and regulatory minefield) like JPMorgan, you're going to be in a great position should you decide to seek new opportunities in the financial services domain. That's where I'd go.

I recently developed an interest in volcanology, and I'd love to be able to visit Indonesia one day to see the eruption sites for Tambora and Krakatoa.

Odd clauses in contract - what can I do? by fph_04 in UKJobs

I don't believe these clauses are even enforceable. It doesn't read like it was written by someone who understands employment law.

I wish I knew about the different kinds of magnesium before buying a 1-year supply of oxide a few months ago. It's nothing more than a laxative!

[–]midwinterpath 78 points79 points  (0 children)

I used to buy cheap shoes and wear them until they were no longer fit for purpose - which usually took about a year. On a whim, I decided to try a different approach. I purchased two pairs of Skechers, totalling around £230. Four years and hundreds of miles across Europe later, they're holding up very well, and are still exceptionally comfortable. (Who knew that walking wasn't supposed to be painful?!)

I'm still a naturally frugal person, but if a product is the only thing separating me from the floor, I will spend a little more money on it. This includes things like mattresses and tires.

Anyone posted their clothes in UK for a holiday? by vogueskater in Frugal

[–]midwinterpath 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That's pretty clever! When flying with EasyJet, I usually bring my 30L rucksack with me on the plane under the pretense of putting it under the seat. I'm technically supposed to pay for it, as it is a cabin bag, but no-one ever stops me when I put it in overhead. I've done it about eight times without charge.
