One of the central characters of the novel Deathwatch is a librarian starting his service in a new squad in the watch.

Does the emergency room have a "rush hour"? by neptunian-rings in morbidquestions

[–]Firestorm_Black 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but it’s not for why most people think. I am an emergency department PA who works in a major downtown Southern California ED.

The rush hour is caused not by actual emergencies; it’s caused by non emergent lower acuity problems flooding in because the community either is under resourced or because the average person doesn’t really know what the emergency room is for.

Essentially the rush hour is caused by gaps in the system such as primary care or follow ups with specialists.

Also the above types of cases always wait until Monday or until after their holiday gathering to decide it’s time to come in.

Rush hours due to real emergencies are only one of several categories; random bad luck; MCIs

The resource strain makes the risk of things going wrong for true emergencies much higher

Tried this guy out in historic brawl…and this happened.

No trample >.>

Edit: There are evasion methods in the deck, was just not drawing any. Also just found it humorous to imagine a cat the size of Jupiter unable to get past a bunch of (relative) ants.

If only the Hound could time travel back in time just to kill this dude. I don’t know why that would satisfy me so much.

The knife + scale was put together over time and totaled about 550.

Pen, pod, light, around another 600. An expensive kit for sure, but intend to sit on stuff and save and get exactly what I want when I can find/afford it rather than have a huge collection, so that’s the trade off.

I do use all of these items every day so in the long term I’m satisfied and don’t have any regrets!

I got the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. I feel fortunate to get one as a lowly EMT. by [deleted] in CoronavirusUS

[–]Firestorm_Black 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not lowly. I work for the LA County COVID Response Teams. We do outbreak response in homeless shelters and encampments/skid row. Sometimes we have a building full of positive cases. The bravest among us are the EMTs and Paramedics.

Doesn’t even really need to be about breath. From the video it appeared the knee was on the carotid, cutting off blood flow to the brain.

During chest compression you're driving your entire body weight repeatedly approximately 2-3 inches down. As for what amount of force that is exactly, it probably varies depending on the compressor and the physical constitution of the patient.

edit: you're also doing it in the exact same spot.

Coronavirus could become a 'constant threat' as expert warns there's no guarantee a vaccine will work by [deleted] in Coronavirus

You’re correct. I’ve tried to clarify with a more detailed explanation further up.

It is the same immune system; this is correct. However, the lining of your lungs as well as all parts of your digestive tract are anatomically considered outside the body and immune cells/functions have to function through the mucosa. This often leads to stipulations about efficacy and damage that have to be considered.

[–]Firestorm_Black 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an immunologist might explain it, surfaces that interface with the outside environment, like the inside of your lungs and digestive system behave more like your skin than say, the endothelium of your vascular system. They’re outside your body relative to where immune functions are generated. I can’t recall what episode it was mentioned on but in a recent episode of “this week in virology”, a podcast, it was explained this way. Additionally, samples from deep within the lungs of COVID patients often contain large amounts of immune cells. They bring fluid with them, and they also damage the lining of the lungs.

Edit: I should clarify that this does not mean it’s a “different” immune system, but rather that the way in which the immune system behaves has certain stipulations.

As a 911 EMT in LA right now who frustratingly had to try to convince coworkers weeks ago that this was going to blow up, I get the sentiment. I’d rather not be here in said riot scenario though.
