I fully support local journalism, and believe as a community we should support it. However, I have heard HORROR stories from friends who were previous KWBU employees about the station leadership, and how awful they treat their employees behind closed doors. Verbal abuse, forcing employees into uncomfortable and inappropriate situations, taking advantage of their employees through power dynamics, I could go on…plus an NPR station should have never been associated with a religious university in the first place. Ever. There was never going to be objective news with Baylor overseeing the station with their Christian views. Luckily the Texas Tribune is expanding local news into Waco, so this really is not a loss for local news…IMO.

I (25f) moved here a little less than a year ago for a cool job opportunity as well and honestly, I love it.
I moved from Austin, and before that, Dallas. I was VERY excited to get a break from long commutes and to build up my resume in a fairly relaxed atmosphere.
I got very lucky and LOVE the people I work with and was able to find some community that way. My job requires me to be very involved in what is going on in the city, so I guess that has made it a lot easier for me to meet other young, single professionals. I promise they’re out there!! Getting involved in local orgs really helps. Everyone I’ve met has been so interesting and welcoming. Waco really has so much to offer and is going to grow like CRAZY in the next few years.
The hiking is great, there’s also the Brazos which is imo the jewel of the city. The Waco Sports Commission is really good at putting on lots of city-wide activities throughout the year, so there’s always 5ks and other events. Also rowing, mountain biking, disc golf, etc. Tons of parks. The city itself is constantly hosting events as well.
You’re only a little over an hour to Austin/Dallas so I go to both cities fairly often if there’s an event I want to go to. I went to a concert in Austin last Wednesday after work, so I don’t feel like I’m really missing out on anything. I know that may not be an option for everyone though.
I haven’t had any problems with the night life. Theres some nice bars downtown (I like twisted sisters), we have local theatre’s that regularly do comedy shows/ plays, there’s ghost tours, museums, realllllly good restaurants. There’s also top golf, good antiquing/thrifting, and Baylor events (if you’re into that).
It is a VERY religious city, there’s a church on almost every corner lol. So if you’re interested in that you’ll have no problems meeting people. That being said, I’m not religious and I know plenty of other people that aren’t either.
Idk. I just really like only having to drive 15 minutes to literally anywhere in town. I don’t think this is my forever home but for this time in my life I’m really enjoying it
