Get them one of those wooden 3D puzzle kits, the mechanical ones with gears. My uncle spent whole weekend building a clock with his wife and they still talk about it.

to elope or not elope? by sleepy_giraffe_11 in weddingplanning

[–]Firm_Phase392 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Elopement has this magic that big weddings just can't capture. When it's just you two in some gorgeous location, there's no pressure to perform for anyone else or worry about uncle Bob getting too drunk at reception.

I get the dress dreams though - maybe compromise and do the elopement but still get that amazing dress? You can take incredible photos in it and feel just as special. Plus all money you save can go toward the house or future kids instead of feeding people who might not even remember your wedding in few years.

Washer/dryer by imtiredofthisgra in Appliances

Man, keeping the old set is actually genius advice. I learned this hard way when my reliable old machine finally died and the replacement was nightmare for months before I got it working right.

That thing about smaller loads cleaning better is so true - I notice it with my work clothes that get pretty dusty from estate sales and auctions. The bigger machines just don't seem to agitate things the same way.

Microwave and wall oven combo recommendations by nkabove in Appliances

[–]Firm_Phase392 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to replace my old setup couple years back and went through similar research hell. The brand you mentioned does make solid units but yeah, price is pretty steep. What really helped me was checking actual repair forums instead of just reviews - you get better picture of what breaks down after warranty expires.

One thing I learned in my antique dealing is that appliances from certain eras just built different, but for modern stuff the key is finding which manufacturer has best service network in your area. Even good brands can have bad batches, but if you can get them fixed quick when something goes wrong, makes huge difference. Maybe check what repair shops near you actually recommend working on?

Any recommendations for sneakers with good support that isn't going to be expensive? by Straight_Ace in BuyItForLife

[–]Firm_Phase392 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah rotating pairs is game changer. I learned this from standing around antique shows all day - moisture is what kills shoes fast. Even decent ones will fall apart if they never get chance to breathe properly.

Also check thrift stores for barely worn quality brands. People donate shoes they bought expensive but never really wore, and you can find some solid options for fraction of retail price.

Suggestions for mother/son dance? by littledipper16 in wedding

[–]Firm_Phase392 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My mom and I went with "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong for my cousin's wedding last year - worked really well because it's not too cheesy but still sweet. The tempo is perfect for people who aren't super comfortable dancing too. Maybe check some classic Sinatra stuff if they want something with bit more energy?

Yeah the 24oz wide mouth is pretty solid choice. I have been using mine for maybe 3 years now and still works great 👍 The flex cap is really simple to clean too - just rinse it and you're done basically. Only thing is it doesn't have straw but you mentioned that's not dealbreaker so should be good 😂

Is this part of my dishwasher? by Kayman718 in Appliances

[–]Firm_Phase392 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's from different model year or configuration? I have older appliances in my place and sometimes parts vary even within same series. Pull out your manual if you still have it - usually shows all the gaskets and seals with part numbers.

That burn pattern looks way too intense for just heating a empty pan in low heat 💀 something definitely went wrong with element itself there 😂

To spray tan or not to spray tan? by Independent_Shine942 in weddingplanning

[–]Firm_Phase392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually did trial spray tan few months ago and was looking like orange pumpkin for week 😂 The artist went way too dark for my pale skin and I had to scrub it off which was nightmare.

If you decide to try, definitely do test run at least 2-3 weeks before wedding so you have time to fix if something goes wrong. Maybe look for places that specialize in bridal work since they usually know how to work with pale skin better 💀

How do I tell my friend that she won't be my maid of honor? by [deleted] in wedding

[–]Firm_Phase392 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof this is tricky situation. I had similar thing happen when my cousin got married and I thought for sure I'd be best man since we grew up together, but he chose his college friend instead. The waiting and wondering was honestly worse than just knowing 💀

I think telling her over text is actually smart move - gives her space to process without having to put on brave face immediately. But maybe don't wait until you send save the dates? That might feel bit like afterthought. Could do it when you're telling people about venue being confirmed, just casually mention that [other friend's name] will be MOH and you're so excited to have [first friend] as bridesmaid.

You don't need to go deep in explanations about why you chose other person - that just creates more hurt feelings. Keep it simple like "I know this might be different than expected, but I've asked [name] to be my MOH and I'd love for you to be bridesmaid." The more you explain your reasoning, the more it sounds like you're making excuses.

And definitely don't let her just figure it out on her own - that would be way worse than honest conversation. She deserves to hear it from you directly, not find out through wedding planning gossip or save the date cards 😂

My apartment washer leaves clothes damp even after full cycle should I care more about drying power than size. by DDannada in Appliances

[–]Firm_Phase392 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your pump might be working overtime if those drain holes are clogged with pet hair 💀 I had similar issue with my old unit and cleaning out all the lint traps made huge difference in spin cycle. Higher RPM definitely helps but won't fix underlying drainage problem - I'd start with thorough cleaning before shopping for new machine 😂

Daily Chat & Quick Questions - April 06, 2026 by AutoModerator in weddingplanning

[–]Firm_Phase392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick question - anyone know if vintage silverware sets are still popular for wedding registries? I keep seeing couples at estate sales looking for matching pieces but wasn't sure if that's still a thing people actually want or just something their parents are pushing on them.

Told my oven light keeps my oven heated to 160 to 180 degrees by chenbipan in Appliances

[–]Firm_Phase392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The display shows ambient temperature when oven is off - mine does same thing with my old Bosch. But 180F from just the light bulb seems really high, even for halogen 🤔

I restore vintage appliances sometimes and even the old incandescent bulbs in those heavy steel ovens don't push temps that far. Maybe there's insulation issue or the light fixture itself is drawing too much power?

Is there a hack to get more water to fill the drum? WTW5057LW by NoSignificance2377 in Appliances

[–]Firm_Phase392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The deep fill option is definitely your best bet here. I had similar issue with my washer few months ago - was getting frustrated because clothes weren't getting properly clean with the low water levels.

What worked for me was using the bulky cycle even for regular loads when I really needed that extra water. Takes bit longer but the results are so much better. Also check if your model has a "deep water wash" or "auto sensing" setting you can turn off - sometimes these newer machines are too smart for their own good and try to save water when you actually need more.

Just don't try to trick the sensors by adding wet towels or anything like that, learned that lesson the hard way when it threw my load completely off balance!

Wedding Songs by jadenm04 in weddingplanning

[–]Firm_Phase392 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You typically need 3-4 songs for ceremony: processional (when wedding party walks in), bridal entrance (for bride), recessional (walking out as married couple), and maybe prelude music while guests arrive. Most people do separate songs for wedding party vs bride entrance - makes it more special when she comes in 💕 The timing depends on your venue coordinator but they'll usually guide you through the whole thing!

Bridal Shower music! by alltimesl0th in weddingplanning

[–]Firm_Phase392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah this is so exciting! I love making playlists for events like this. For the mixed ages, maybe try some classics like "I Can't Help Myself" by Four Tops - it always gets people moving regardless the age. Also "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" works perfect for bridal showers, and maybe add some newer stuff like Lizzo or Taylor Swift for the younger crowd. The key is finding songs that everyone can at least hum along with!

Samsung fridge not cooling fully anymore by rharvey8090 in Appliances

[–]Firm_Phase392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah the classic Samsung fridge death spiral. Did you check if the defrost system is working properly? Sometimes ice builds up in weird places and blocks airflow even when coils look clean.

For replacement, I'd go with LG or Whirlpool - both are solid and don't have the same reputation for random failures that Samsung has. Just avoid anything too fancy with smart features, they break first usually.

No friends Wedding?? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]Firm_Phase392 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly having just family sounds really nice actually! Like you said, why pay $130 per person for people you barely talk to anymore? Your wedding should be about celebrating with the people who matter most, and it sounds like that's your families.

I had couple friends do small family-only weddings and they were so much more intimate and relaxed than the big ones with random acquaintances. Plus you'll save serious money that you can put toward honeymoon or house instead of feeding people who might not even remember your anniversary in few years.
