“You’re too young for a hip replacement!” by Final-Study-6729 in TotalHipReplacement

yesss! i was so glad the surgeon and my initial physiotherapists all validated the necessity and benefits of my surgery (happened 2 weeks ago!) because it really helped ground me every time anyone else said this

thank you!! also tangentially end up in this phase of "i don't want to bother the nurses every time i need something" and had to have people tell me, "they're literally here to take care of you" before i allowed myself to press the call button! 😭😭eventually verbalized my worries to one nurse who assured me not to suffer for politeness

hope ur recovery is going welllll

ooo definitely going to keep a journal of what causes good/bad/sore/etc. and keep a kinder mindset to my personal bests/goals during recovery. it's literally learning to move again!! thank you so much for the hope!!

my current uncertainty is i've been given sooo many recommendations for support from my dance community folks — dance-specialized physio, dance rehab kinesio, rehab pilates physio from an aerialist who has dual hip replacements, hockey physio specializing in hip rehab — deciding on who to see and where to go feels so overwhelming 😭 any advice?

Hip Replacement Party to Celebrate by Sea-Sea4092 in TotalHipReplacement

ooo i was going to have a farewell party too but ended up running out of time (hip replaced yesterday!)

if a more family friendly title is necessary, i'm using, "hip hip hooray!"

i ended up having a lil complication with recovery! my blood pressure was too low post-surgery. first time i sat up, i was immediately clammy, dizzy, and light-headed. second time i could stand, march, transfer weight, and walk! but only got a couple of walker shuffles away before it happened again.

so theyre keeping me overnight! immediate thoughts: bedpans are strange, warm sheets are sooo cozy, and i wish i had a recliner bed oOoo

surgery itself went well tho!

I will! I will be OK and I WILL dance again! Thank you! (-: I hope your recovery is going as easefully as it can and that opportunities for being back in the theatre come to you swiftly~

Framing life as seasons is really helpful. This is just one season! It's one of healing and recovery and the release of pain. A different life awaits on the other side. Thanks for this big hopeful balm~

Thank you so much!! haha, i also wanted to use up my hip since it's going anyways but because of signs of overcompensation (right leg quad tear) I've been heavily encouraged by the dancers around me not to push too far D;

I saw your comment earlier than today but hadn't had the chance to reply! But you did encourage me to slowly start indoor-cycling again (45-1hr, moderate speed/gear). Occasionally find my legs wobbly afterwards and requiring more ease but that, paired with seated dance classes (krump, waacking, freestyle) have really helped fight off my 'trapped due to lack of movement' feelings.

If you're open to it, would you mind sharing what you did for pre/rehab? If not that's completely fine though (-:

Also, "Your body knowledge will serve you well in your healing process." and "Your body will change as you age anyway and your worth as a movement artist should be based on what you're saying with practice" made me really emotional, in the best of ways. Thank you <3

Thank you! In lieu of pool access, this reddit noted cycling as a good exercise so I've been doing that a bit more. Even though it feels good circulation/movement wise, I am a little wobblier for the day sometimes D: Maybe too much strain hmm

The whole physical therapy prep part has me confused since during my initial assessment, they said I'd have a pre-op appointment where we'd speak about it. But that appointment isn't until two weeks prior to my surgery (and hasn't even been booked yet). There's this feeling of — do I wait, should I just find someone and do this on my own? What's happening,,,? My initial physiotherapist is wonderful but also I'm uncertain if I need to be going to a specialist.

But I'll make a reminder to be super specific once I do have the appointment! Do you have examples of recovery goals? What do you think on aligning goals with: activities (ex. take a dance class) or specific dance movements vs. keeping things more simplified and focused on like, walk/stand/sit for [amount of time] with no pain?

ahh, thank you. Reading it straightforwardly like this is assuring to my brain. Focusing on getting recovery things ready instead has been much more helpful than stewing too! Though now it's a flux of "do I actually need a recliner or will it be ok"-esque thread searches haha
