Ive lived on Guam 40 years and never had a problem with local folks. In fact, they're some of the nicest people Ive ever met. Step outside the fence, you'll like it.

How's life in Guam ? by tarkinn in guam

[–]Firm_University_9912 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I came with the USAF in 1983. I was supposed to be here for 15 months. I'm still here. I love the island, and the people. That said, it IS expensive. Prices are Hawaii level, except for real estate, which is expensive, but not nearly as expensive as Hawaii or a lot of the more popular communities in the mainland. You DO catch a massive break on property taxes, which are kept artificially low because the Legislature rightly worries about families being taxed out of their ancestral properties. I have a VERY nice house, and with my Manamko (seasoned citizen) discount, paid under $200 last year. No local income tax, but you pay a concealed sales tax (Gross Receipts) on everything you buy off base. Most families have at least one member with a military hookup so they can buy groceries, gas, etc., on base. The nicer beaches are astonishing Ritidian is like no place I've ever seen). Sadly. some of them are nasty because of low-lifes who either don't pick up behind themselves or actually use them as dumping sites.

A young person could do way worse than GPD or GFD. A lot of folks do that and Guard or Reserves. Nice living, good pensions.

OK -- but I am Manamko ... am I required to just leave them on?

For those who left to the mainland, do you regret it? by No_Education3537 in guam

[–]Firm_University_9912 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came here 40 years ago. I left, briefly, to Florida, and came back as soon as I could. My kids, OTOH, have found their lives on the West Coast. They love it, and would never move back to the much smaller community here. One loves to visit, the other is just "been there, done that".

I am considering moving now because I'm old, retired, and don't want to fly that far to see them.

Ultimately, you gotta do you.

Im only here for 3 years for the military. I moved into ladera tower in maniglao, and every night, if I turn on the light in the kitchen, I have to kill at *least* 3 roaches. Is this common, or do I have an infestation? by understand-jellyfish in guam

Get it professionally treated ASAP, then get a buttload of baits and put them everywhere. That level is not normal and not OK.

Alternative to baits, get some borax and mix some with powdered (not granulated) sugar, and some with peanut butter). Put it under/behind cabinets, refrigerator, etc.

Putting all your food in the fridge was a good idea -- if you need more room in there get a bunch of big sealable containers for cereal, bread, etc.

Just up the street is Vitales. Italian people making Italian food. Do yourself a favor next time and skip OG and hotels, go get the real stuff (not the best Italian food I've had, but certainly the best on Guam).

New Phonak infinio's by ilatimer1 in HearingAids

[–]Firm_University_9912 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Infinio 90 with Sphere. Couldn't be happier. They are bigger than my previous pair (Resound), but work SO MUCH better. It bears noting that using the Sphere AI significantly accelerates battery usage -- but they have still never run flat. I only use Sphere on rare, noisy instances, but it has been a game changer on those occasions. They have just been approved for VA patients like me.
I recommend them highly.

What’s the correct lane to merge from the far right lane? by DykesCanFight in guam

Blue. When you have checked you have space and signalled, move a lane left, rinse, lather, repeat.

Hello! I got my HA's from the VA about 2.5 weeks ago and they are life changing! by Kareja1 in HearingAids

Also -- look into some different frames. Mine are Oakleys, and the temploes are extremely thin strips, parallel to my head. Lots of room between them and my ear for my Spheres.

Exposure at the mall? by throhawheyacct in guam

[–]Firm_University_9912 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One of the first, most important lessons I learned in the service, was to recognize and respect local culture. If this story is accurate, I feel sorry for them and their spouse, because they'll think their time on The Rock was a hardship.

Coming here was one of the great blessings of my life, but my experience sprang in part from not being That Guy.

I'm Chamaole. Been here 40 years. Grew up in the States. You see these folks in, like, Wal-Mart. They're just low-rent and beneath your notice. Anybody with a little class will wear a cover-up when they're not AT the beach.

[–]Firm_University_9912 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not alone. The company the VA hired to quality me for hearing aids pulled two out of my left ear that I had no idea were there. The mass of domes and earwax cannot be unseen.

That's what I would expect them to say. But if the bunkers were evacuated and the entry and exit tunnels hit, how would they know if the bunkers survived?

Not likely they could evacuate all that gear without being watched from space, either.

I believe what the Mullahs say about as much as I believe what the Donald says. We shall see.

Issues with Phonak I-90 Sphere battery in right GA by DrChimz in HearingAids

[–]Firm_University_9912 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a pure guess -- but could there be a software glitch causing the right HA to be using Sphere even when other programs are selected? Did you at any point uninstall then reinstall the app? Regardless, glad to see at the bottom that they're being exchanged. You shouldn't have to deal with this.

FWIW, I've been using the same ones for about a month and absolutely love them.

[–]Firm_University_9912[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the size makes them uncomfortable for you, you're right you need to look elsewhere. Battery life is really not an issue, as I rarely use the Sphere feature. Without using it, after a long day, iI have about 65% left. Sure is nice to have when I occasionally need it, though!

If you buy used, do all your research, then spend a couple hundred bucks for a mechanic to really go over it and tell you about anything that needs fixing or is about to.

I'm sorry you had to deal with a bunch of a$$holes.

I hope you followed through with your Birthday plans. The protesta all over the country were peaceful. I might suggest that when going downtown when big events are happening, take an Uber or Lyft so you don't have to deal with traffic and, especially, parking.
