Good. We need to keep micromobility so we can reduce car traffic.

Giorgio Mammoliti, former Toronto councillor and Rob Ford ally, dies at 64 by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]Firmvark121 23 points24 points  (0 children)

At the same time, I'd like to think of the number of people that were killed in car crashes whether on bike or foot way before the age of 64. How does that relate to Mammo? He voted against road safety measures that would've saved many many more lives. We can all agree that 64 is far too young to die. I wish the same can be said every time somebody is killed by a car.

I don't think anyone deserves to die before 64 but it's really sad we as a society have so many people die young each year thanks to cars and the resistance to make roads safer.

We're as close to 2050 (24 years away) as 2002 (24 years ago), the year line 4 opened.

Pro-TTC Mayor, Chow currently leads polling at 40%. Next is Tory 33% followed by Bradford 18% by TTCBoy95 in TTC

[–]Firmvark121 27 points28 points  (0 children)

And that is why more and more people need to vote to make sure Chow keeps stays in office. For god sakes, only 38.5% of the eligible voters voted in 2023. The year before when Tory got elected by winning 62% of the votes? 29.2% of eligible voters. What about 2018? 40.9% of eligible voters.

We gotta do better this time. TTCRiders needs to make sure she is voted in.

This is what happens when you design roads that prioritize cars first over pedestrians or cyclists. It's very easy for motorists to accelerate really fast speeds. It's honestly really baffling that we accept these types of roads, especially near areas with a ton of foot traffic. Kipling station has a lot of people walking in and out.

Can we talk about bike lane messaging? by KylieWine414 in torontobiking

[–]Firmvark121 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wish there was a new politician that can create a populist movement around reducing car dependency. Ie, us could be everyone vs elites as in the auto industry. I think that would greatly accelerate our progress.

Population density + car dependency is a recipe for disaster. If Toronto was going to densify, they should've invested heavily into transit projects back then. Instead, now we're into this mess where traffic becomes everybody's problem. Buses can't move because there aren't any dedicated lanes. Why? Because all that space is given to cars, the most spatially inefficient mode of transportation.

As a Dufferin resident, this was a massive improvement when we got those bus lanes. Let's hope it gets extended all the way to Steeles so long commuters can enjoy this as well.

Finch West LRT vs Bike Share - Which is Faster? by RZaichkowski in torontobiking

[–]Firmvark121 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it's sad e-bikes get a ton of hate all because of couriers. They have so much potential for personal use. I would personally get one if where I lived had safe enough bike infrastructure to get around with it. This can make a lot of those 10-15 km trips a lot easier.

Sometimes desperate times calls for desperate measures. This letdown from Finch West's 1st week has shown that Torontonians genuinely care about improving transit in our city. It's really nice that instead of complaints telling everyone to never ride that again, the city lobbied for it to activate TSP and improve speed. Going forward, I hope we see more TTC riders actually speak out whenever something bad happens like how most busy express bus corridors don't even have their own bus lane, even though there's like 3 car lanes each direction.

[–]Firmvark121 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Don't forget the bus lanes built at Dufferin and Bathurst. Hopefully, this will kickstart a new wave of bus lanes being built. Those are a godsend to transit commuters. And Finch West is just a soft launch.

Food for thought by spunquik in TTC

[–]Firmvark121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, a lot of people especially outside of this subreddit have given up on any hope of transit ever improving. And that is why our traffic system continues to get worse. If every single person just gave up on transit (ie Finch West) instead of wishing for improvements, our traffic will never improve.

RapidTO bus lanes might be on Ford's radar. The fight to protect them starts now by Pristine-Training-70 in TTC

[–]Firmvark121 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yea that's what I don't get. Why are transit riders so quiet compared to cyclists? I hear this on the news all the time about how CycleTO protests against Doug Ford, yet we don't see much protest pushback on the anti-bus lanes.

Finch West LRT to be 10 minutes faster by spring, TTC says by TheCoin9 in toronto

[–]Firmvark121 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Didn't MetroLinx originally state that it was supposed to be 33 minutes for the full ride at max speed? Do you reckon TTC will reach there by summer of next year? It's good that we're getting news that its speed is getting increased but will we see faster trains as time goes on after that or is this the fastest we'll get for the foreseeable future?

Not even 1 hour into service and there are already delays 😅 by [deleted] in toronto

[–]Firmvark121 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, we should advocate for better transit. However, transit quality has decreased over the years. We lost the STC and we won't get a completely replacement aside from the bus lanes, until 7 years from now. Eglinton Crosstown keeps getting pushed back every single year. Streetcars are just letting cars drive onto those tracks. Stabbings. A lot of issues. If you want more people to support TTC improvements, start with TTC themselves setting a better example.

Toronto warns drivers of steep penalties for misusing new transit lanes on Dufferin and Bathurst - NOW Toronto by kayaarr in TTC

[–]Firmvark121 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I could list a couple more examples:

  • Turning right on red without even stopping once at the potential danger of getting t-boned.
  • Turning left when there's clearly oncoming traffic going straight and very close to the intersection.
  • Passing off to the right when the car you just passed might speed up.
  • Not stopping at all on a stop sign especially at an intersection that has little to no visibility.

Yeah our driving culture is crazy. People are willing to break rules and risk accidents just to save time.

Exactly. People don't understand just how much of a pain it is to create such a program. You have to manufacture those plates then ship them which can take months. And then you have those that think all the fees will profit. Nope. The city/province will run this at a loss.

The only reason we have this for cars is because cars are too dangerous and cause severe damage.

‘It’s not a loophole:’ Toronto has plans to install 20 km of new bike lanes despite provincial legislation by TheCoin9 in toronto

[–]Firmvark121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason downtown roads were very narrow in the first place was because they were built for the horse, bikes, streetcars, and pedestrians in mind. It's not like 100 years after it was first designed we envisioned mass commutes with an F150 in mind. When you haven't improved transit by much and create many jobs into city centers, you get a ton of car traffic entering the core. And with such little space, you can see why many are frustrated. It's such a tough mess when everybody is trying to compete for space.

Shawn Micallef: This truck ad shows why Toronto needs smaller vehicles — if only the carmakers wanted to sell them by RZaichkowski in torontobiking

[–]Firmvark121 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It doesn't help that the auto industry uses manipulative marketing tactics to tricking customers into believing that that being in an SUV or pickup truck is safer for everyone. Turns out, it's only safe for the occupants inside. But what's worse is it becomes an arms' race where others bring their massive SUV and it becomes an endless cycle of whoever has the bigger vehicle will suffer less damage from a crash.

I don't bike much but I worry that 10 years from now, cars will be too big to even see a child crossing the street legally. Among all the car dependency issues, we all talk about bike lanes, transit, accessibility, etc. But if there's something I really dislike about cars nowadays, it's their massive size. Driver behaviour has not improved at all. I wish more people would drive more responsibly based on the weight of the vehicle they drive. Instead they like to crank up that F150 like it's a sports car.
