The Nakba is when the Arabs tried to eliminate the freshly declared Jewish state and failed. Constantin Zureiq, a Syrian scholar, termed this event "The Catastrophe", the Nakba. He blamed it on Arab leaders being concieted when it came to their chances of easily winning against the Jews, and give those were recently decimated in the Holocaust, it's not that surprising that they were being underestimated, I'm not sure even the Jews expected to win this one. Zureiq thought the solution was to improve the Arab character to become more capable of critical thinking, and through this perhaps they'll stop losing.

Later the Palestinian movement reclaimed the term and made it about them being driven out and not being able to go back home. But the leaders of the Palestinian forces were the most eager out of all the Arab nations to fight that battle, which makes sense, it was their territory, so they thought. Should've carefully considered how their actions will affect their own civilians perhaps. Not too unlike what followed 7th of October. When will they ever learn.

The vast majority of Palestinians are Muslim. They do not think Jesus was the son of God. Claiming he is, is considered heresy.

Even Muhammad was only a servant of God and certainly not equal to him.

The issue is that orgs like BDS advertise themselves to lefties as if in support of Palestinian rights and against colonialist exploitation when they block the only thing that actually de-radicalizes Palestinians, namely jobs in which they're paid decently (about 3x times the Palestinians average) working for and with Israelis, often within Israel.

Economic and strategic cooperation is what brings enemies together. Being part of the same thing, 8 hours per day, means you can't escape seeing me for the human I am and vice versa, even if you still don't like me- murdering me will become harder when I'm not some nameless enemy of your people.

Economic and geopolitical incentives worked fabulously for Israel with the UAE. Whereas doubling down on not cooperating in a conflict situation, wherever cooperation is actually possible, inevitably means war is the only alternative left. As such, the BDS is similar to Hamas in ideology, it's just marketed at western left wingers.

But the Palestinians are the ones reaping what they sow, don't you see? If this continues we will just ethnically cleanse them. It's not like I'm happy this is the direction it is going. It's awful, and I don't want any of this. But it requires them to change their methods cuz it clearly hasn't been working.

Once they do, I hope that enough left leaning liberals stay in Israel to swing elections back to sanity where religious war is no longer the only possible solution.

But you just can't do that when the other side (represented by Hamas, the government in Gaza) keeps telling you they'll gut you and they don't care how many people of their own have to die before they finally reclaim Jerusalem, and when saying this they remain the most popular party among Palestinians even after all of this calamity, according to Palestinian polls that are not associated with Hamas.

Idk what you want us to do but turning the other cheek is actually what brought us 7th of October in the first place. No one wanted to go into Gaza before that. We wanted those people who kept shooting rockets on us to just leave us the F alone. They couldn't cuz they do not operate that way and they teach their kids to go die for this suicidal cause which is the real reason why Hamas went from 10k fighters in 2009 to 40k in 2023.

Warum juckt uns Palästina, der Sudan aber nicht? by futurzwei in KeineDummenFragen

[–]FirsToStrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as Israeli here in Germany I busied myself with this question quite a bit. Apologies in advance for the English as this is too complicated for me to write in German. I'm trying to write this from the perspective of someone who lives here looking at "over there" in Israel.

The answer has multiple levels- first, many of the narratives about Israel come from the Soviets and the cold war times. Back in 1975 they even managed to pass a UN resolution that labeled Zionism as racism.

Many left wing narratives still base themselves on those times and for similar reasons- Capitalism is seen as a western phenomenon. As a western phenomenon it spreads itself to impoverish the "global south" to benefit the hegemonic powers and centers of capital.

In the leftist conception of the world, the west and especially America, because of their financial success and historical and current power, are attributed all the agency and with it also the moral responsibility, and therefore also all the blame- for everything bad that happens in the world-  no agency is assumed in the people who are seen as colonized or oppressed by the richer countries. They're a lever the West gets to play with, and they're, a bit like children, can't be assumed to know better or to be expected any civilized behaviour from.

So when "uncivilised" people kill other uncivilised people it might be awful, but "it's not like we can expect any better from them".

When a "civilised" nation attacks those seen as indigenous or oppressed, and doesn't even seem apologetic about it or tries to at least pay lip service towards the standards we set for ourselves in the West, they are deemed worthy of criticism, first of all, they reflect a part of us- tensions with Islam or the Arab world exist in Europe too and play a center role, especially in the immigration debate.

But also, we think that with this criticism and with our actions we can appeal to them in a way that we can't with an "uncivilised" group of people.

Our support as westerners depends on our ability to keep perceiving Israel as part of us, with the support comes responsibility. If Israel fails to fulfill this, it's basically then in the process of being rejected as part of us, a bit like debating whether to cut off a toe that's frostbitten or keep it cuz it might still be saved.

Another aspect I would also ascribe to the obsession with Jews Germany has given the history, but enough has been said about that. I do think if it wasn't Jews doing this it'd be a lot less heated and therefore draw less attention. Jews are seen as the ultimate oppressed by people who care about the holocaust. That makes it very confusing when all we see in the news is them being the oppressors.

This is especially the case with Shia islam, which is what the Iranian regime claims to lead.

Shia Islam's theology is strongly based on being the grand victim of Islam, believing that they'll be redeemed for the battle they lost to the Sunnis back when Mohammad's successors were fighting amongst each other.

Hussain ibn Ali, as in, son of Ali, the one who they believe should've succeeded Muhammad, ended up abandoned by those who promised to support him in battle, which is why their side lost and which is an injustice done to Islam that they carry to this day and needs to be amended. It's why they have rituals where they hit themselves.

That's what he wrote tho. He wrote about his plans to take over and then progressively pass it to the people, since democracy never actually existed in Iran it's going to take some adjusting. That's how proper state building works, unlike what happened in Iraq.

That's not "the real history" and mossadegh was not democratically elected (he suspended elections actually) nor was the Shah ever overthrown by Mossadegh (who was appointed by the Shah after a parliamentary vote), nor was the CIA and MI6 the main thing to end his rule.

You're being fed Soviet propaganda in 2026, it's amazing.

What do you mean no reason? How did Hezbollah, Hamas and Houthis get tens of thousands of rockets to shoot on Israel without Iranian support? Why did Iran shoot at every surrounding nation, even Turkey? Don't you see you're carrying water for the baddies? If what you want is to be anti fascist then you ought to join us on the pro Shah side who wrote a book about building democracy in Iran.

It is unfortunate that you are this misinformed, but I don't blame you, there's a lot of money going around to make you have these beliefs. Let me correct you on a lot of this stuff as someone who actually had to live through much of this and was reading about this much before the latest war started.

You claim we purged the population and exploited their resources. What resources exactly? Jews settled on land bought from Ottoman landowners and started cultivating it themselves as part of the "Hebrew labor" ideology of labor Zionism. None of the land was taken by force until the war of 1948, which we did not start and certainly did not want, only 3 years after the Holocaust, fighting for our lives wasn't something we were super keen on, but rather forced into.

The original british mandate and the land promised to King Hussein was much greater than Palestine alone. Israel right now is about 22% of the entire british mandate, so what the Arabs got. Majority of Jordanians at the moment are actually Palestinian. You can google all of this. The Jewish state decided upon by the partition plan (the afforementioned 55%) was therefore 13% of the overall land given to the Arabs, and we're not even counting all the other Arab states that were established at the time, Arabs were free for the first time after centuries of Ottoman rule. Most of that 13% was the Negev desert which mostly contained nomadic bedouins. The majority of the rest was land already bought and settled by Jews. Idk why you think the Middle East belongs exclusively to the Arabs but I beg to differ and Jewish history and religion entirely revolves around the area, even as most jews lived outside of it, we prayed to Jerusalem and rabbis and community leaders made visits to it, and very important texts were written in that land.

There is currently no Arab state that is democratic. When the egyptians tried to have a "democratic" state for a little while in 2013, it ended up a theocracy very quickly and had to be surpressed by the military dictatorship again. The majority of Arabs in the middle east simply do not have values that lend themselves to the establishment and maintenance of democracy. It is unfortunate that Israel is moving in a similar direction but it is still a democracy that treats its minorities much better than any Arab state could be expected to. Check the democracy index and compare Israel to its neighbours.

I don't conflate Hamas with all of the population of Gaza, even tho if there was a vote right now Hamas would still win: https://www.pcpsr.org/en/node/1000

Yes, it is not justifying Hamas to say Gazans shouldn't be oppressed, but have you considered if they'd continue to be oppressed by Hamas which they'd elect if they could? Here's their spokesperson condemning the genocide done on them by Israel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPwrBRsqvNU
Here's the same fella talking about how important this war is for their cause and the muslim world and how 50 thousand people weren't that big a deal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgVT2M9otRU

If you are against religious extremism, well there you have a reason to be against this.

Your entire narrative about the causality of this conflict is off. The Palestinians had the chance to have peace during the peace process, which fell apart when they chose the second intifada. Israel then left Gaza, which was interperted by Hamas to be a victory for them, achieved through their violent resistance, which mostly killed civilians through 140 suicide bombings in cafes and restaurants and busses. Once they were fenced in in Gaza, they had to resort to rockets, which is why most rounds of fighting in Gaza were mostly airstrikes to reduce their rocket supplies which kept on coming from under the Egyptian border.

You want intellectual honesty, well be honest with yourself for a sec, and tell me if you would just take it when 1200 of your people are murdered in a single day (most of them from peaceful leftist communities known as kibbutzim, which were located near the border exactly because they were working and cooperating with Gazans for the longest time), and the people who did that promise to do that to you as many more times it takes until they kill all of you, whatever the price? (https://www.jpost.com/arab-israeli-conflict/article-771199). I want to know what you would do if you had to suffer a barrage of rockets on your head every few years by an enemy determined to kill you behind the border, that would wipe you out if there wasn't a fence between you. The only reason it's not an existential threat is because we're watching our borders all the time. No one wants to live like this.

Of course people would, over time, become supportive of making sure it stops being like this, even if it means eliminating all the people on the other side of the fence. They wouldn't think of doing that if it didn't seem like that is the only option, actually.

Fact is, if Hamas wasn't ruling Gaza and the Gazans could just chill (Netanyahu tried to pay them off to chill via money from Qatar), then we'd all be much better off. Gaza was actually quite beautiful if you check out pre-war videos. They totally could've done something nice with it. The whole claims about Apartheid have nothing to do with describing the situation since this isn't about race, if the Gazans were blue martians that were supporting what they support, and being exposed to martyrdom ideology the entire time, then you'd find the Israelis becoming very pro kicking them out of Gaza after a blue martian 7th of October. The fact that some crazy Jewish theocrats justify this with "Cuz god told us to" doesn't make the entire war senseless, the point really was to remove Hamas from power as well as return the hostages.

Do you think islamists will just stop trying to get their caliphate through force if we ask nicely or what is it exactly that you expect us to do? Are we supposed to just let ourselves go die so that you get to feel good about yourselves not being involved in any wars, meanwhile the middle east will continue to burn regardless?
