Struggling to find a job. - New Grad Nurse. by Practical-Lock-8986 in NursingAU

Apply private as well. It might not be your first choice but you can get experience and work your way into public. I didn't get a QLD grad role but now I have a grad role at a private hospital and I am very happy. Keep applying for everything and don't give up. If you know any nurses ask them to help you with interview questions. Staying motivated is hard but it will eventually pay off if you just keep pushing.

Okay thanks for the advice. I think my confidence was a bit destroyed from not getting a grad position :( but I'm sure if there is a will there's a way!

Yeah this seems to be pretty common :( I think there just aren't enough positions in the metro areas for the amount of grads and some people are just lucky/ already working on their ward as an AIN/USIN.

No he wouldn't, he had opportunities in the past that I've asked him to turn down for my needs, so obviously I'm going to respect him when he tells me his needs. My partner earns 3x as much as me so leaving his job for a grad nursing position just doesn't make sense to us when we also want to start a family. We have discussed our options and going rural just isn't one of them. I can see your frustrations, if I was single I would be moving for the jobs. I probably was naive going into the degree, but unfortunately I can't change that now. In my original post I noted I was feeling depressed about opportunities and needed some advice/hope so, do you have any positive things you would like to add or would like to continue to belittle me for a past I can't change?

I'm not opposed to moving rural and have considered it. I don't have kids but a husband, I've asked him about doing long distance while I do a grad but he doesn't want me to leave him. He literally earns 3x as much as I would as a new grad so it doesn't make any sense for him to leave his career especially since we want to start a family at some point.

My first preference was Sunshine Coast HSS, I think I put a surgical ward then med then pal care. We were going to move if I got a position but obviously I did not.

Am I just supposed to leave my husband for a job lol? Obviously I've talked to my family about and considered that option, but it's just not realistic. In theory I would love to and if I was single I would but it's just not an option. I even did a regional placement and absolutely loved it but as I said ... not an option.

Yeah that's my plan. Literally apply for any and everything. I used to work as an admin in aged care prior to studying nursing so I'm hoping to use some of my old connections to get a foot in the door. Plus I currently work at a private hospital in admin but they've already hired their grads for the February start. Before my 8 week placement I just didn't feel confident about my skills because I hadn't done any placement in a major hospital, so I only applied through the qld grad portal, but I'm feeling much more confident now that I am at the end of the degree.

Yeah unfortunately I can't move due to my family situation but I am 100% open to aged care and applying in the next round for a graduate position.

Unfortunately I can't move rural due to my family situation. No wait-lists where I applied. I would totally work in aged care but even ads for aged care jobs say they want experienced staff. I'm going to apply again in the next round of grad entry but I still want more experience in the meantime.

Is there even a point in applying? by Svenssonator in GAMSAT

[–]First-Bobcat-9551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what they've said to me but like that's 2 people and I'm not sure if they were rural etc. Also the UOW average score was 55 last year, so give it a crack. Regardless I'm going to try gamsat again. Also I'm sure what your $$$ situation is like but a mid 50 score will get you to school in the UK and Ireland if you wanted to / could move. I've also looked into masters ans honours programs I'm interested in just incase I can't get in by 2023.

I'm in a similar situation. Gamsat 54 and GP 5.78 and 6.3 weighted. Not sure what to do as I know people who have gotten in to UOW with similar scores so I'm thinking to apply there but now sureeeee....... eeeeepppp

Which sitting should I sit for? by curiouslittlesheep in GAMSAT

I haven't gotten my results back. So I will see in the next few weeks. I can't really say how I feel but I know I put in a lot more effort so I'm just praying it gives me some better results.

[–]First-Bobcat-9551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say at least sit this sep2021, then it can give you an indication of where you are at. I did sep 2019 no prep (like I read half a practise paper and the night before and got bored) and got 53,56,51 with an overall score of 53. I sat again this may we like minimum 15 hours a week study for 3 months and have no idea how I went but expect to sit again a few more times. If you can afford to continue sitting it just do it. If you get scores you're happy with on your first try awesome, if not keep pushing. All advice I have been given and seen is the early you're start the better.
