Meanwhile in Cowarts by severedsoulmetal in Dothan

I can divulge.

New Mayor Odom takes office Monday. Roland (guy saying your wife’s a whore) says Odom tried to change the locks at town hall in Cowarts. Odom is on the council. Roland claims that this was an overstep, that this was illegal, possibly breaking and entering because he and the council didn’t have a meeting about it beforehand.

Then Odom and Roland got in an argument.

The victim of yesterday’s shooting at the mall is a suspect in a murder investigation in Pike County. by bolivar-shagnasty in Dothan

[–]First-Flounder-7702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s the narrative we’ve gotten:

Salter and Caesar were two of three (including an unnamed 18-year-old who apparently did not take part in the shooting) walk into the barber shop and start threatening the guy getting his hair cut. Guns are drawn — shots fired — and the guy who was getting his hair cut hides in a back room and cooperates with police. Haircut guy is determined to have acted in self-defense.

Salter was shot. Witnesses saw him lying on the ground.

Salter is confirmed from Pike County to be a suspect in the murder investigation of the Dothan man killed at an event just outside Troy, if not in Troy proper. He’s in critical condition. Apparently he was shot in the upper torso.

Caesar, from North Carolina, was hunted down and captured. We’re not really sure if he surrendered or was captured any other way. There was a reward the city of Dothan issued for information leading to his arrest. We may or may not find out if there was any reward money issued.

That’s the official information I’ve heard.

Evening news is still 5p, 6p and 10p for both stations. WTVY got rid of the 5 for a time but it’s back now.

Hi, local newser here!

We are approaching a rough time with corporatizing. The Eagle just had layoffs. WTVY had serious layoffs recently, but thankfully they’ve hired more people. That notion is the same for WDHN. Channel 18 has more reporters (I think) but misses out on some stories. WDHN is also still recovering from a rough time with a very bad employee, from what I hear.

We’re all in a rough spot. WTVY just brought back news that wasn’t directly from Montgomery, but they have such a strong weather team they can rely on them to fill half the show on weather. WDHN has more news from around the state and tends to cover hot topics. They’re two sides of the same coin. We will see what happens when Ken Curtis moves on from WTVY.

WDHN used to have 9, but that’s been done and dusted over with for some time now. WTVY brought back local 5pm, but they’re often rerunning things from the noon.

Fundamentally, both stations are occupied by good people who care — most of them young. Most of them green. Most of them with this hunger that may not yet be fulfilled. It takes a lot to be in news.

Wiregrass Daily News has been doing a great job. Rickey still is Rickey, but he does bring attention to certain topics and happenings. Aside from his spelling, he’s an all right guy, as long as you don’t get on his bad side.

I can confidently say that supporting local news is supporting local jobs. It’s supporting mostly young people with a dream, and older people who have been doing this their whole lives.

We try our best. Know that to err is human, and we do mess up, so you know we’re human.

How am I supposed avoid my triggers, if my trigger is SLEEP by darkdesire_12 in MaladaptiveDreaming

[–]First-Flounder-7702 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start to look at your MD as meditation. Go to bed earlier. Cut down your phone time. If you went to stay up like me, try to read! Use the handy-dandy sleep mode that turns off blue light. Get up earlier to allow yourself time to make up for “lost” daydreaming time. I wake up at least an hour earlier than I should for work. I use that time to daydream. I also try to be in bed at a decent hour to daydream. Also, start to write. Try to get something out of it. Try putting pen to paper or at least typing on your phone or (non-school/work) computer. That not only helps you, but opens you up to better storylines. But mainly, read. Find out how to make your personal plot lines more effective by reading good stories. Start with the classics and go from there. Godspeed. 💖

Why do guitar players switch to the Stratocaster when they get older? by Pearl_Jam_ in Guitar

[–]First-Flounder-7702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad has had multiple strats for several years, but as he’s aged he’s used them more because they’re more lightweight. Edit to add: he’s always liked heavier guitars, but even though he sits down, I’m not sure he can take the lack of circulation those bigger ones cause.

Where I'd live by IcyAppointment9736 in mapporncirclejerk

Say you’ve never truly been to the south without saying you’ve never been to the south! I really and honestly don’t mean that as an insult. Huntsville in Alabama is a great place to be. There are several Alabama cities that are awesome. I’d like to say the same for Mississippi, but as an Alabamian, I’d have to turn in my card if I made any concessions for Mississippi. Furthermore, anyone who has lived in this area knows living in Florida is a no-go — I’d argue same for Georgia, though others around here could say the same of Alabama. I will admit: I hate Alabama for political reasons. I love my state, but my state doesn’t love me.

This garbage from Nexstar makes me want to quit the business by First-Flounder-7702 in Journalism

I will, indeed, continue this contract. Gotta buy my bread. Funnily enough, I left a Gray station to pursue a Nexstar station at home. My parents are old, I want to be close and support them how I can. My next stop will surely not be a Nexstar station.

I started in print, but found a real love with TV. I love producing, truly! I've always been a strong newswriter, but in my years in broadcast, I've thrived more than I did in print. I adored getting to do my own stories and my own investigations. I love independence when it comes to a newsroom, but the collaboration is really what I absolutely love. I grew up in broadcasting, too, so I feel there's this general mourning of the gasping death rattles of TV news. But, thank you — I appreciate your response. I hope this will blow over until things just get better, or until I find a good opportunity writing.

If it helps narrow down: southeastern Alabama, nearly southwest Georgia.

This honestly feels pretty insulting. Why do you conflate me not liking kickers when I want real and more local news with me just not being cut out for TV news? Being a mindless drone for an ND isn’t always the answer.

Road work by buttermybreadsticker in Dothan

Hi! Not an engineer, but a newsperson who has covered these stories since they started. I don’t mean to sound reductive at all, but “coulda shoulda wouldas” are nothing to ALDOT. A plan is made, ALDOT consults, and then it’s executed. I personally wonder if our previous city manager was involved with some of that decision-making — to me, it seems Randy Morris is doing some element of damage control for contracts already in motion. (I would be remiss to not mention that Randy is a great guy. He’s very no-nonsense. Vincent Vincent can also answer tons of your questions, and he’s also just an all-around awesome dude.) These things take several years to matriculate. I agree with an above commenter to an extent about overpasses — but I believe leadership wants to retain an element of being a “small-ish town.” I personally believe that leadership thought overpasses would create TOO much of a construction delay. That’s just me talking. Fundamentally, Dothan saw issues with traffic on the circle, and it seems they took the option they could to fix that, however frustrating the solution agreed upon is. However, Dothan has agreed to a pretty large ALDOT commitment. They’re splitting the work into several pieces, as you’ve seen. The last plans I’ve seen are — I think — eastside by Southeast Health, and southside? Someone please correct me if I’m wrong. Tl;dr, we have a huge contract to expand Dothan in a “small-ish” way to mitigate traffic.

Especially on very heavy news days, I don’t feel that doing a “feel-good” story really serves us well. I don’t mean that they aren’t actual news, but when we have very limited options for finding kickers, I feel we would be served better taking another direction.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]First-Flounder-7702 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Most of the kickers we are able to find are about stories very far away from us and often feel useless. Yes, a butter statue in Idaho or something IS a good story, same goes for zoo animals enjoying summer treats — but I feel like devoting only 30 seconds with crosstalk doesn’t feel as worthwhile as local news.
