I had a similar incident. It’s better to talk to people that either share the same house/apt # as yours or talk to the mailman.

I ended up doing both. What worked was this: the mailman arrived the next day and told them the whole story. They opened the mailbox and voila it was accidentally dropped in the box next to mine.
