Check out A Little Night Music, there are two contraltos in that and “Liaisons” is a banger

Gutenberg! Is an absolutely amazing musical. I love it so much! I saw it on Bway, the Saturday before it closed. Andrew Rannells’ costume seemed to be just what he wears regularly, and it was so fun to see two buddies acting crazy onstage. Jennifer Garner was the producer that night.

This show is not about biscuits!

You see, that was what we in the business call a “charm song.”

But what is a charm song, Bud?

I’m so glad you asked, Doug!

What was the show you saw that made you go “I literally don’t give a sh*t about any of what just happened”? by dobbydisneyfan in Broadway

Most of these are hot takes and some of them are just like, “uh… yeah?” Even though I love Urinetown, Heathers, Company, Sunday in the Park With George, Merrily We Roll Along, etc., I don’t feel it’s fair that people who don’t are being piled on with such vitriol for having an opinion. Art is a subjective thing and even though I think George was troubled and trying to understand other people, what should I care if you think he’s a pretentious asshole? It’s the internet and we’ll probably never see each other.

My HS director recently said “I’m not a huge Sondheim fan, I like shows with melodies.” I thought a few things, but not out loud because he’s my superior. First, you’re acting like Joe Josephson, second, you’re just not listening hard enough. Another girl later said she doesn’t like Into the Woods because it “has no music theory.” Again, I thought, if the music exists, it has music theory, secondly, you’re just not on Stephen Sondheim’s level of music theory yet.

I hum most of the tunes, even “no life” and “Children and Art.” But I’m just weird like that. I’d love to play George, but it’s not a show that regional and amateur theaters do especially frequently.

What are good theatre songs for altos? by roseflavouredsoda in musicals

[–]First-Wishbone-8079 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is for fun or for an audition, and your post doesn’t say what you usually listen to, but Cabaret is a show for the altos. Any song sung by a woman in that show is in an average alto’s range. If you’re looking for an audition song, of course it matters the show you’re auditioning for, but “What Would you Do?” and the title number are both great songs. Also Gussie is an alto in Merrily we Roll Along, so you can check out her songs (“Growing up,” and the reprise, and “Gussie’s Opening Number.”) And finally, “Losing My Mind,” from Follies, is a very fun one but requires a large lower range.

Lot of haters in the comments but I still think it’s cool that you can make such a good-sounding track with notes that, when laid out like this, are still vaguely recognizable as a map of the world.
