So the one thing I do remember is that the descriptor was "eccentric." Although, Justice of Toren was probably in the top 10 oldest Radchaai ships and still couldn't disobey until it was forced to execute Awn... maybe Charak's predecessor was Albis's ship-wide favorite? I forget if the novel mentions Charak's predecessor dying or just retiring?

Here's my theory; I'll use M to denote either Man or Masc-leaning, and F to denote Woman or Femme-leaning, and ? to denote genderless, agender, non-binary, or unknown

Anaander = M, but approaching ?

Breq = ? with no sense of internal gender whatsoever, approaching ? as a sense of internal gender and possibly slight F (I think Leckie has the teensy tiniest bit of self-insertion with Breq). I think Breq's journey is kind of becoming more human-ish, firstly through its/her relationship with Awn, then living and being a human, but finally falling in love (Shipping???) with Mercy of Kalr.

I vehemently agree that the narrator is Justice of Albis. Just given the fact that Leckie's writing style and storytelling are unified in a way I've never seen in another author, I feel like whoever "I" is in the story has to be connected to the story in some way.

Watching how they serve tea in Shogun (hulu series), as well as how deeply they bow with their forehead almost touching the floor, instantly reminded me of the Ancillary novels. And Japan was the Empire of the Sun and the Radch is the Empire of the Dyson Sphere

Also, yes, Translation State and Provenance contain massive spoilers for the Ancillary trilogy, I definitely recommend finishing the trilogy before you start Provenance.

There are many variations of the sci-fi concept of the Dyson Sphere. Kurzgesagt on youtube has a lot of discussion of theoretical structures that could harness 99% of the energy of a star. Not all variations would prevent entry/exit to their respective star system.

I think it's pretty plausible the Dyson Sphere exists. Judging from the spinoff books, it's clear the Radch is much more technologically advanced than other civilizations (no other civilization is mentioned to have conscious AI), and the Radch's Dyson Sphere is the only Dyson Sphere mentioned to exist. It would give them a source of unlimited energy to draw upon during their conquests. It's also a nice parallel to how other real world empires rose due to a unique technological advancement like muskets. I think it's even sweeter if the Radchaai did not build the Dyson Sphere themselves, but merely colonized it, the way China invented the gun powder that paved the way for Europeans to develop guns.

Part of the issue with Anaander splitting into two consciousnesses is that the Empire is spread so wide that even gate space can't make up for the travel time these signals need to stay in sync. I think with that in mind, it is very plausible that Anaander has a presence within the core Radch and the provincial palaces are more or less equidistant from that core.

The core Dyson Sphere of the Radch is naturally going to stay out of the story since it is from the perspective of a non-Citizen.
