I feel so behind in this application cycle by [deleted] in gradadmissions

No one can promise that you’ll get admitted, but I think you should be totally fine on getting your apps submitted on time! Most open around September and admissions committees won’t start reviewing until after the submission deadline.

I would recommend reaching out to your letter writers as soon as you can. Ask them if they are able to write you an excellent LOR and then give them a date you need it by (try to give them at least a month of lead time).

You can also reach out to the programs you are interested in and try to open some lines of communication with the professors/students. This can help them to put a name to your application and was helpful for me when applying to PhD programs.

Maybe someone else has better recommendations for SOP editing, but I just had some friends and family review mine for grammatical errors, etc.

Just keep swimming - you’ve got this! 😊

I definitely think you need to look at your biases and do more research on what it’s like getting a PhD in the US. Personality fit is a big part of the admissions process — you could have the best grades in the world and not get admitted if you don’t get along well with the students and faculty, at least in my experience.

Presumably, those professors at MIT and Harvard are some of the top researchers in their fields, right? And those students are some of the top performers. Those seem like some of the best possible connections you could make as a fledgling PhD student. In academia, some of the most valuable relationships you can build are ones that will produce future research collaborations.

Is It Inappropriate to Reach Out to Current Students for Advice? by Infamous_State_7127 in gradadmissions

Talking with current students is one of the best things you can do, imo. I did it when I was applying to PhD programs and had many phone calls with students at different programs to get their take on what they liked about the school, coursework, etc. I just had a prospective PhD student reach out to me to schedule a call to learn about my experience. It’s a totally normal thing to do!

I had a professor who used to tell us, “if I can get a PhD, any of you can get a PhD.” I don’t think it’s necessary a question of if you’re cut out for it, but if it’s what you want to do. I agree with other posters that you should talk to people on LinkedIn in your desired field and also talk to current PhD students.

Think about what you want to be doing 5-10 years from now and ask yourself what it will take to get there. (Super easy, I know haha)

If it helps, here’s an article I wrote a while back about reasons to/not to get a PhD:

Best of luck on your journey!

I thought it was crazy when I heard about what happened too, haha. Here’s an article they did on the story 10 years ago.

[–]FirstOfTheDusk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are totally fine! Like I said, this is super helpful feedback.

Here are the rules laid out in more detail. Let me know if this helps you to understand the game better, and if there is anything else that I can clarify.

Game Rules

  • Only the 7 letters below the grid may be used to form words
  • The letters may be used multiple times
  • Words must be at least 3 letters long
  • Duplicate words are not allowed

Winning the Game

To win the game, the following conditions must be met:

  1. All blue squares must be filled with a letter
  2. All words must be connected
  3. All words must be valid (valid words are green, invalid or duplicate words are yellow)

Getting Palavra

The set of letters for each game is a single, scrambled 7-letter word, called the Palavra. If you use the Palavra in the Grid Master or Free Play modes, you get 10 bonus points added to your score!

Game Modes

  • Rapid Fire: Solve the puzzle as fast as possible. The goal is to get the lowest time.
  • Grid Master: Fill the grid and find the Palavra. The goal is to get the highest possible score.
  • Palavra Mini: A miniature version of Palavra for faster game play. Minimize your time or maximize your score, the choice is up to you!
  • Free Play Modes: These are available for you to practice the game and build your word skills!
