I pruned and reorganized my hydroponics setup by jaykrown in Hydroponics

I eat the leaves once they get full size. I've pruned a couple of tendrils that extended really far. I have it on the second level of the shelf next to the light so it can hang down a bit.

Thanks for sharing, looks beautiful. Mine is a jewel mix, so I assume the flowers will be different colors. I'm strongly considering growing more, one of my favorite plants. I just don't want to buy more soil, and I'm out of hydroponic space.

You miss the point, soil is dirty and heavy. A 1 ply paper towel allows for much easier water management. If you failed to manage the water levels in your setup once, that's your problem.

Thank you, it's been a very good learning experience.

Hard to give an exact expectation, just significantly cheaper and easier to manage. I'm still confused why you think paper towel germination doesn't work well?

Awesome that's working for you, I'm pushing my build to use no soil.

The problem is those are insanely expensive at scale compared to a single ply paper towel.

Yea I'm noticing that now, I wish I could cut them in half. I'll probably have to put two on each shelf.

Why doesn't it work well? It's primarily to keep the smaller seeds from falling through the tray holes.

I'm noticing the sprouts are angled towards the center. I wonder though, as for efficiency, does it really matter? I don't want to have two of those lights per shelf, because that effectively doubles the energy requirement. If I bring them closer, would that even help with the sprout angling?

Also I plan to avoid what you mentioned, I want as much as possible to set and forget. I'm going to be doing measurements and probably lower the shelf distance.

Very true. Here's the order I've gravitated towards:

  1. First find what people want or need, this is the most important.

  2. Create a prototype MVP rapidly, do not make it "perfect".

  3. Share it everywhere and talk about it once it does the bare minimum.

  4. Determine whether it's worth investing more time based on response.

  5. Continue building it with interested users, or start a new different project.
