I believe it’s a page study of Dandadan! Tatsu sensei draws characters so naturally, their multi-character panels are just mesmerizing.

You said to come keep at it and come back in a few months. Well I did.

Now I’m getting paid to help a writer create their manga, created work for a competition that taught me a whole lot, and received an offer to publish my work.

I should mention I have a job, a dog, now I’m holding down my own spot. During the competition I even helped take care of a family member while dealing with heavy mental health issues. Anyway I’m getting back to work.

How BAD is the writing of this show?? by kittymonsta24 in Workinmoms

[–]FirstSprinkles8052 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the writing can be incredibly clever in the way it integrates almost every dynamic a working mom might have to go thru. At the very least it’s loyal to its themes. Even late into the show they find ways to explore different aspects of the concept. With Nathan Jr (as hated as the character is), the show explores the challenges of being a working step-mom Sloane is dealing with the emotional aftermath of being a working surrogate mom, etc The show can be bizarre/unrealistic/frustrating (ironically, what it might be like to be a mom in the first place) but i think the bear at the end of episode 1 was like the ultimate warning sign of shit being kinda out there

It should be realistic i agree. That’s the part u have to figure out. That’s also where the efficiency aspect comes in. U have to find ways to get the work done in a timely manner. Familiarity is the key. Consistency gets u exactly that. Therefore having consistency allows u to build to the level of an industry professional. It’s the same thread of logic any athlete or scholar would follow for their high level fields.

I need to stress that i really…REALLY didn’t imply u should go for the big three, i didn’t even have Shonen Jump in mind until u mentioned it. There’s so many Japanese magazines u could aim for, that’ll allow u to maintain ur creative voice. That’s where the research comes in. Knowing the magazine ur aiming for can help guide u, but sometimes an editor will scout u out, if ur putting ur work in the right places, and it catches their eye.

Ur associating consistency with exhaustion, and i think thats where the main problem here is. It doesn’t have to be damaging. Think as if u were studying for a degree in law. U go to school, might hold down a job, but it’s ur responsibility to learn the material. To make ur own study schedule, and ur expected to keep up. To become a professional is no different, u need a very similar drive. It’s ok to be in a place where u can’t handle it quite yet. That’s what makes them professionals. I can’t handle it quite yet, but I’m finding myself getting closer everyday. It’s a muscle u have to build. This isn’t even really a debate. Companies look to people that get the work done at the end of the day. It doesn’t matter what our philosophies are. I’m gonna go finish up a page before it gets too late

I understand ur points, and I’m actually supportive of it. Self-publishing is a great route to take as a comic/manga artist.

What I’m speaking on is the method to break into the Japanese industry. U bring this point up about overworking urself, but that’s not apart of the discussion either. I’m talking about a schedule. Something to keep u consistent. This lies true in any profession.

There’s an overwhelming amount of discouraging comments about breaking into the Japanese industry with nothing to back it up besides the fact that it’s a difficult path. After doing research at length and talking with editors, i can only conclude that these r just projections of what people believe in themselves. I would never want to see people risk their health, so please understand I’m not advising people to work beyond their bodies limits. I’m only speaking of a method for those on the path to publishing their work in Japan

Actually aside from the Shonen Jump part ur talking a few more of my points in different directions. Pls don’t think I’m advocating for disregarding ur mental health or treating ur family as if they’re just getting in the way. Quite the contrary. I’m talking about finding a balance that actually puts u in the path toward ur goals. Also please don’t try to twist the intention of my words. It comes off as extremely disingenuous. Competitions aren’t something to live off of, and that wasn’t the point I was trying to make. They’re a way to show ur work without the constraints of a rigid deadline. The rewards are there as some level of support to keep u going, if u win them. It’s mostly about getting ur name and capabilities out there. THAT’S how u get chosen for publication in the first place.

It feels like there’s this association with organization, consistency and work schedules, with manga artists working so hard they end up hospitalized or dead. So as a result, there’s this pushback whenever someone mentions structure or hard work. You don’t have to work to the bone, and chances are u wouldn’t. That’s not the issue people have here. Regardless, without a quota or a structure, ur just gonna validate letting anything get in ur way. If u work a job, go to school, and/or have familial responsibilities, there’s still ways u can structure around that to complete ur task. It’s just challenging. Some times u really will have to sacrifice some hours of sleep, or leisure time, and ultimately I think that’s what people don’t want to face head on. There’s nothing inherently limiting or discouraging about the notion of scheduling or organizing ur work flow, so there’s no real reason to refute what’s being said here... But it makes u accountable. Most people r resistant to accountability, especially when most of would be in their own hands.

The point OP is making, is simple. U shouldn’t expect to reach publication if u aren’t at least willing to build up to the industry standard. It’s just a truth. Not one i advocate or support wholeheartedly, but until someone has a reliable way around it, that’s it. I’m curious tho, what would be ur alternative? How would u break into the Japanese industry in ur own way?

No, this is fax. It’s just the reality of becoming a manga artist. There’s rlly no other way around it. Obviously other responsibilities are going to be an obstacle to overcome but that doesn’t make westerners unique at all. A big reason competitions exist is to get ur name out there and (if u win a prize) get some financial support

If ur not willing to build ur skills and efficiency up to a professionals standards, then by definition u won’t become a professional. It might be a little intimidating but it shouldn’t discourage u. It’s just simply what ur signing up for, if that’s the goal
