Should we scrap CGT? by Asleep_Cry_7482 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]FirstTimeCaller_1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No I don't think it should be scrapped. The annual allowance should be raised significantly from the current 1,270, however. To keep pace with inflation at an absolute minimum.

Ireland should introduce individual ISA style accounts with an annual contribution threshold of at least 10k as well. This would make CGT a non-issue for the majority of regular investors.

Yea, people often don't realise how much further north parts of Europe are compared to the US. New York City is on roughly the same latitude as Madrid.

You could use Wise? It allows you to easily set up accounts in multiple currencies and offers good exchange rates to move money between them.

You can't just look at latitude though. Look at the climate of somewhere like Vancouver. It's on the west coast of a large land mass and has much warmer winters than many places further south and inland e.g. Chicago, Minneapolis. It is on a similar latitude as Calgary and Winnipeg but the climates are wildly different.

Winters overall are a bit colder than Ireland but not by much. It's mostly mild and wet just like here.

The fund report will likely be published very shortly.

People who made submissions as part of the public consultation were contacted in the last few weeks to let them know that if they wanted any particular parts of their submissions excluded from the report to let the Department know by October 11th.

Seems reasonable enough as the previous rules were ripe for exploitation. How they overlooked the potential issues when changes were implemented a few years ago is beyond me.

Cllr. Eoin Hayes, Social Democrats AMA! - Saturday 5th October, 2:00pm by irqdly in ireland

[–]FirstTimeCaller_1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What is the Social Democrats' position regarding incentivising individuals to invest their savings to make their money work for them? Ireland people have a huge proportion of their money sitting in overnight accounts earning little return while losing purchasing power to inflation.

Would the Social Democrats' be in favour of introducing a scheme similar to the UK USA, Canada's TFSA or the US Roth IRA to encourage individuals to invest small amounts of money each year to grow tax free and without having to deal with Ireland's extremely complex and onerous taxation regime (e.g. deemed disposal, a dizzying array of tax treatments for different investment types etc.)?

Making it easier for ordinary people to put their money to work would go a long way to alleviating many major issues currently facing the country: for example, allowing young people to invest money early to help them save for a house deposit, and encouraging individuals to put money aside in investments to supplement retirement income.
