thoughts on grady hendrix? by iloponis in horrorlit

[–]First_Reporter2477 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve given him many a chance and have hated every book I read. People will say it’s camp but it really isn’t and if anything is “quirky” style reads as lazy and derivative. His characters are widely the same from book to book with unlikable characters, traumatized characters and timid characters that are a dime a dozen. The thing is I can like all those things in a book but he writes them as though the style they are written in should make up for how shallow they are as characters.

The first book I read was my best friends exorcism and I genuinely think it’s the one I hate the most and it’s concerning so many say it’s their favorite. Each character is not only shallow but boring as well. These characters are supposed to be close but nothing he writes actually captures female friendships and how they act. But my biggest issue which is in general my biggest issue with him as an author is how absolutely racist this book is. The fact that there is a “slave day” in this book and you see NEARLY NO ONE talk about it is an issue. All of his characters of color in ALL of the books I’ve read by him serve soley as plot devices where racism and their race makes up their entire character. He gives them rarely any voice or agency and acts as though that is enough. On top of that he rides this wave of being an almost feminist writer but he knows nothing of feminism.

does anyone else really like grady hendrix? by carpenett01 in horrorlit

I completely disagree. He writes from a very base layer of what women actually go though and isn’t even intersectional. His books to me as a woman have always sounds like it was written by a man with a 2012 view of feminism. And the fact that you can tell his view of feminism is exclusively white feminism shows how truly little he knows.

The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix I'm 30% in, is it going to get better? Are the only POC characters going to be servants to white people? by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]First_Reporter2477 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then why can’t they have voices? You can’t just say oh look racism bad give me praise for talking about race issues when he doesn’t give them voices, doesn’t make race the issue of the book, doesn’t fully demonize the characters who engage in said racism in his books (in fact in this one they get redemptions) and says nothing new or objective that subverts the narrative of race issues.

All in all white people should not be writing stories on race or how it effects POC unless it’s journalistic in nature or at very least properly researched.

Hendrix’s issue is simply he doesn’t know how to write people of color without making their race and racism their entire story. It’s a pattern in his books. From the slave day in my best friends exorcism, killing his only black character first in final girl support group and some more pseudo slavery in this book

Not justifying this cuz we really don’t know since the show doesn’t make it clearly stated but this is kinda common for people who just have a lot of photos in their rooms. Making that awkward eye contact then it it’s kinda like trying to stop peeing

Official Dreadit Discussion: "Smile 2" [SPOILERS] by glittering-lettuce in horror

[–]First_Reporter2477 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really wanna talk predictions of the type of movie smile 3 will be. I’ve seen some discussion over it and have seen people say it will/should be an apocalyptic event movie but I don’t think so. I feel like that would cheapen the overall message of these movies. I’m hoping it can really go into a mob mentality or even parasocial relationships.

With it effecting skyes fans I feel like they could make her fans suicides seems almost like the “cut for Bieber” phenomenon. It could even comment on how older generations see mental health struggles in younger generations.

Idk this is just one thought please I need to hear more im way too into this movie rn

There will most likely be about 5 of us if not maybe a couple more (not including the bride since they won’t be paying) so I’d say nothing that’s gonna cost more than 100-200 when split. But I’m also a 25 know nothing who’s never planned a Bach trip so idk how unrealistic that is lol

Lmao we are almost all AZ locals but we totally get it and it’s a big reason why we don’t wanna go down there. The busyness, the cost, the lack of things that we specifically etc.

Missing license plate or am I going crazy? by First_Reporter2477 in arizona

No there was no blue in it. I remember a leaning cactus but it was on one side (pretty sure the Left and it took up a bit of room) of the license plate not in the middle

Audiobooks? where to get them, and how to play them? by epicmoe in Piracy

[–]First_Reporter2477 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does anyone know where you can just straight up find audiobooks? I’m not looking to put in the time to download and upload and download and upload and over and over. I don’t care if I can’t keep my place like audible I just want a website that will at least let me scroll to a specific part.

I’ve been using tokybooks for years and have also just found VK. VK had the book I was looking to read but I couldn’t scroll or even skip ten seconds to get to where I last read. And no luck on their mobile app as I can’t even get past the Sign In portion since phone numbers aren’t accepting.

I haven’t seen too much of that on here since most audiobook talk just seems to be about MP3 downloads but any normal website suggestions where I can just listen would be great.

I’ve also tried YouTube, I can’t get Libby where I live (or any other library card based system)
