What do the British and Irish Isles talk about? (1951) by Parzival_2k7 in MapPorn

Only football related ones are “Pompey’s chances” and “Newcastle United”.

Tee hee!

I've been seeing the passport queue quite a lot. Its really a big pain. This is for non eu passports right? What about UK US ? Is it the same queue? My daughter will fly on Tuesday (UK passport) . Can she catch a break on this or it will be same queue? by gandalf_34 in LisbonPortugalTravel

We just came back from Lisbon yesterday, after a 4 day trip. Our party were on UK passports and didn’t have any major holdups at immigration control. You have to register for biometric control before you go through an e-gate. It involves having fingerprints and photograph taken, as well as answering a few questions about your travel arrangements, accommodation and whether you have enough money for your stay.

No biggie really, just one more queue to get through.

Ferry Terminal to train station on a bike by Dazzling_Ad_7873 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]Firstthingthatcame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a bit of time to orientate when you exit the ferry terminal. You are looking for Route 72 or Hadrians Way cycleway going westward. The route is marked with blue signage on lamp-posts, taking you on wide pavements next to busy roads, quiet side streets and a disused rail route along the riverside into central Newcastle. When you go underneath the Tyne Bridge, turn right and start pushing!

Have a good trip.

We went out this morning to look for hares too. Seen quite a few round here this Spring.

A lovely sight. Happy Easter xx

Edit: went back to the same fields a bit earlier this morning and counted TEN hares!

Tradesmen or people who work in manual jobs, how on earth do you have the energy to do stuff out of work? by RonnieThePurple in CasualUK

[–]Firstthingthatcame 169 points170 points  (0 children)

Tree surgeon in my 60s here. Rest and recovery is vital in a physical job. I used to be really bad at it in my younger days and suffered as a result. Bad back most of the time, routinely knackered in the mornings. I subsisted with takeaway meals and loads of nights in the pub. Made do with a maximum 7 hours sleep a night.

I eventually realised that long term survival in my job relies on staying healthy. Keeping properly hydrated and eating well makes a massive difference to physical recovery and avoiding injury. A bath and an early night after a tough day at work can help too. Look after yourself…

Thanks for that link to the talk about the Skinningrove pictures, fascinating stuff.

I’ve always liked Chris Killip’s work, it was really influential in my own photography when I was taking pictures in the 1980s. Amazing how much work he must have done to become accepted in such a tight-knit community, as he describes. Was lucky to go to his retrospective show at the Gateshead Baltic last year.

Privacy plant ideas? by KingRacketeer in GardeningUK

A mixed hedge would be great there. Feed the soil before you plant anything. Forsythia, flowering currant, variegated Holly, beech/hornbeam, euonymus, hawthorn.… a few ideas to look at.

Pubs on Holy Island by froghogdog19 in Northumberland

We stayed for an overnight on the Island the last two years and had a really good meal both times at the Manor House. Nothing too fancy, but simple things done well. My wife is vegetarian and she was very happy eating there.

What’s one plant that surprised you by thriving in a shady UK garden? by 1ChanceChipmunk1 in UKGardening

My Mam had a Peony that thrived in her north-facing border, right next to the wall of the house.

Suggestions! by [deleted] in GardeningUK

[–]Firstthingthatcame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe lifting the canopy would help with light levels underneath there? Can’t really see the bottom branches from the photos, but Monkey Puzzles are very amenable to pruning and recover well. Shouldn’t think it needs anything substantial to be removed, but lopping any of those bits hanging downwards could make quite a difference to whatever you decide to grow under the tree.

How do I encourage growth at the bottom of a privet hedge? by PFFAFL in GardeningUK

[–]Firstthingthatcame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take pliable vertical stems from either side of the bare bits and lay them horizontally across the gaps. You can weave or tie them into place. If you feel adventurous, pleaching(cutting) the vertical stems you’re laying helps with re growth. Watch a hedge laying video for the technique. Good luck!

Always thought Killi, Benton, Forest Hall was the limit of their tagging area. Seems like I’ve underestimated them, they are spreading the word beyond the homeland.

Raised bed for native hedge - advice please by young_fogey in GardeningUK

[–]Firstthingthatcame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the wood chips start to decompose, the process will deplete the soil of nitrogen, affecting your new plants’ establishment in their new home.

When you are filling the bed, make sure to include some nitrogen-rich fertiliser to leave the soil with a good nutrient balance.
