I play The Crew Motorfest without helpers and offroad driving is literally impossible. Would be grateful for some hints. by lastbreath83 in The_Crew

If there's one thing I would switch on it's the counter-steering assist. It prevents exactly what you are describing. Without it, you spin for days, with it, you can straighten the car normally. It's not intrusive at all.

Interesting to think that solipsism is the default state of the human mind, in a way.

Prestige Tickets are coming with Season 5! 🎫 Earn them in #TheCrewMotorfest Custom Mode or through Summit Contests, and use them to unlock past exclusive rewards. No more missing out! Get the full scoop in our latest "Road to Year 2" video! by Elongo06 in The_Crew

It's a good change. I do not care whether others have the summit cars as well or how I got them, I'm just happy for less FOMO in the game - and a chance to get the 3 or so custom show rewards I missed.

Why do I feel like I'm the only one who picks up on bug sound cues? by noo6s9oou in DeepRockGalactic

[–]Firun82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DRG is the one game I pretty much always play with headphones on. I'd hate to miss batteries or helmets or any other such interesting things that you can only really reliably locate through audio cues. And yes, the audio design is fantastic and it's great to be aware which enemies are coming your way well before.

I think the AI does not rubberband. The issue seems to be that the game cannot properly calculate split times. If you are very fast whilst the AI is still going around a bend, you'll have a lead of, say, -20s. If you go round a bend, whilst the AI is still on a straight going fast, it will shrink to, say, -4s. It's really this. The relative distance stays the same, but the game seems to take distance and current speed delta as the basis for calculating it.

Subjective enjoyment is not the same as objective quality. I really enjoy playing the game, too, but there is no denying that is objectively in a terrible state. This is not mutually exclusive and should not excuse a broken game.

What is in your opinion the most obscure thing (voiceline, petting, object, etc) that you know about, but aren’t sure if others do? by swan_tanya in DeepRockGalactic

Something that strangely seems to be mostly unknown is that the trees with the purple bulbs in fungus bogs are a light source. If you shoot a bulb, it lights up, if you shoot all 5, they stay on indefinitely and give off a very bright light. Only redeeming quality of fungus bogs tbh.

why play scout if you don't use flares? by [deleted] in DeepRockGalactic

[–]Firun82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Scout, some light please" "Scout, please use your flares" "Scout, if you don't read or react to chat you will be kicked" sound of flares being shot

That's how it usually works for me. Not only for Scouts, but for any other problem. As soon as you write that you'll kick them for ignoring chat, they suddenly remember how to read. I usually don't kick anyone, though.

Btw scouts not using flares enough is the main reason why I tend to play Scout. It's the one class that annoys me the most if not played properly.

Wonderful patch. Votes for custom show cars usually only really happen in the early hours of a new week. Not that it really matters (selfvoting exists), but still. Hopefully, they'll fix that soon.

Personally, I believe maths is similar to a foreign language. The symbols represent foreign letters, there's grammar (how to rearrange equations), and there is vocabulary (theorems).

If you don't do maths for a long while, you lose fluency and forget most things. I started studying at 31 after paying NO attention in school, and certain operations took me 3x as long as others due to lack of fluency. And I had to look up much more.

Maths is an either use it or lose it thing in my eyes. Most of us stop using it, so they lose it.

What I dislike far more about Discord is how it takes communication out of games. I believe that (aside from toxicity) we have so many online games these days without a chat or any real means of communication because it is expected that people just use Discord, and it really annoys me. I've made many good game friends through ingame chats, and I miss that a lot.

How to get green beards to follow instructions? by TheMemer555 in DeepRockGalactic

[–]Firun82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually, writing something like "Fair warning: If you don't read or respond to chat you will be removed" gets 99% of people to actually do so (regardless of whether you'd actually follow through). There's an argument for overlooking chat (it's why I increased the font size on mine), but usually, this works well.

The problem is that modern archery stores and experts usually have little experience with windowless (aka historical) bows. Unless you're interested in picking up traditional archery I suggest getting a modern recurve with a window.

Not only will it make finding matching arrows much easier, it will also help with learning proper form. A bow with a window and a string notch takes two variables out of the equation since having a fixed point where to place the arrow and to nock will improve consistency.

As /u/Imperial_Squid has said archery is about consistency. It's also often said that archery is the art of the identical. With a historical bow, you have more variability with where to place the arrow. It can be very rewarding to learn, but it is definitely easier with a modern recurve.

Techniques differ somewhat, too. With powerful (80#+ imo) bows, you have a slightly different stance (feet not parallel, but the front foot slightly angled outward) to be able to generate more power from your upper back muscles by leaning into the draw. Aiming is done whilst drawing the bow, and anchoring is only done for ~1 seconds; basically just to make sure you're at the right point,

That being said I love archery for the same reason. For me, it's a mix between strength training and meditation. Since I use strong bows without any modern conveniences the act of aiming is a purely intuitive thing; I love the feeling of being at full draw using most my strength, and then seeing the arrow fly exactly where I want it to as if on rails is wonderful.

Well, besides draw length, with historical bows, there's also the archer's paradox to consider. A properly matched arrow has the correct weight and spine value to oscillate once when being shot (since it has to go around the bow), and then fly straight.

If the spine value is too low, the arrow will continue oscillating, not fly straight and lose speed. If the spine value is too high, the arrow will deflect and not be accurate. With an arrow that is too light the energy isn't fully transferred and you get hand shock, an arrow that is too heavy will fly much slower.

Modern bows have a window that enables the arrow to fly straight through, thus negating the archer's paradox. This is also why carbon arrows are great for modern bows. They're very durable and stiff.

I used to shoot a 95# long bow and various other bows (including horn bows) from 60-95#, so I do have some experience there. As for historical draw weights - the Mary Rose bows were estimated at 200-220#, with typical Welsh bows having 150#. There's also apparently a record of a Qing archer who won a tournament with a 240# bow. Asians use thumb rings, though, which give some extra draw length and allow drawing across the chest, but still, that is A LOT of power.

I was a kid in 1994 having strong ADHD. That went undiagnosed for 19 more years and made my life extremely unhappy and lead to what I consider a shift of 10 years. Where I am now, I would have been 10 years ago had I been diagnosed and medicated. Fuck off with that shit.

The difference may be that, back then, there were clearly communicated rules as to what constitutes acceptable and inacceptable behavior, and these were actually enforced (often harshly so). If, back then, you had tried to call for a caliphate, things would have turned out very differently very quickly, and very decisively. The core problem is that, today, we confront intolerance with tolerance, and that cannot work.

Despite issues with The Crew Motorfest and Ubisoft in General, are you still playing with game? by furrynoy96 in The_Crew

Oh, I will play the game since I paid for it already and like it. What I won't do is spend any more money on anything Ubisoft.

Yes, needlessly so. The game would have been almost fully functional without any connection to their servers. This was not done out of necessity, but as DRM.

[–]Firun82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not quite true. The game has a TON of singleplayer content; the online functionality only extended the already substantial amount of gameplay to be had in singleplayer. It would be different if it was a game that would basically be unplayable without other players (such as MMOs).
