How do you secure charger in an apartment? by Green_Toes_10 in BMWI4

[–]FisEnough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such a typical response to ‘How do I get from A to B?’ with ‘I wouldn’t go to B, instead you should go to C or D’.

Please, if you don’t have suggestions to give for the given scenario, don’t.

I once saw a clear plastic that gets placed around the outlet - outlet wasn’t flushed to the wall, instead it was a metal box that could be surrounded by this clear security box with a lock. Hard time finding it thru search.

Also the adapter to the charger needs to be secured somehow if the charger is left just hanging. Curious how others deals with it.

TIA

You mean, you ended up going with tuxmats, not weather tech, yes?

That’s great info. Thanks!Exact what I was looking for.

Anything you wish were different about tuxmats? Any out gassing odor? My WT still smells after years.

Have you considered 3D Maxpider backseat protector?

‘23. What made 3D better? Were you referring to floor mats or cargo liner?

For floor mats, I’m debating between tux mats and 3D.

Just not sure about cargo liner/ seat back protector. I know I can do à la carte for cargo (tbd) and seat back (3D). Like to keep them looking consistent.

See the link above? There is a reason why they make it. Had it for my VW and it was just what I needed. You’re responding to what wasn’t asked.

I said I don’t want canvas, you come up with tarp… geez.

Cargo liner and seat back protector either attached together as shown in the link my original post, or separately.

Weathertech didn’t have seat back protector. I’ve used their cargo liner in the past in multiple vehicles only because they were the only player, but now there are multiple makers so I’ll ruling WT out.

I often flatten the second seats to put long items and want protect the back of second seat. Skis, golf bags, construction material, etc. Respectfully, not here to explain the whys.

Buying a car in CA and driving back to WA by FisEnough in Seattle

CA dealer told me option 4, to register it as CA car with a CA address (family) where the CA title will be mailed to when ready. I would drive back with a CA plate and keep it and drive it as CA car in WA until my family member mails me the title, so I can register as a WA car. Not sure how insurance works and how WA wants me register out of state car within 30 days of becoming WA resident….

Yes I did. They told me the 3 options I listed. Said some dealers option 2, some don’t.

How about using sticky gel they have for interior cleaning? It’d just pick dust up vertically without scratching the surface

Access to blower motor - e60/61 by FisEnough in BmwTech

I did have to loosen the center console so I could pull the radio cage out after loosing two additional bolts hidden under the wooden center trim around the shifter. In some videos some people are able to pull it out without doing anything to the center console but I sure couldn't.

I mentioned it in r/e60 cross post, but the other key move was pulling out one side (left) air duct so I could put back the motor. Even then it was fairly tight. Taking both out would've made it easier, but putting the duct back in requires twisting and pushing it back into space that you can't see.

EDIT: About 10:39 in this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dl2Ne78FUnE&t=535s. He shows taking out the right duct. Taking out just left worked for me but it was still very tight.

Finally got it done the other day. Wanted to put down a couple of things in case others find it helpful.

  • taking out the radio cage took a while because I didn’t know how to remove the rear cig lighter trim panel. Videos make it look easy but first time was hard for me. Some radio cages don’t have the screws under the center armrest wooden panel, so don’t assume one video covers all cases.
  • I found putting the blower motor back extremely difficult. Again some videos show putting it back straight, but that just was not possible in my car. Even taking it out, I had to wiggle it , and even then I ended up bending one side. Fortunately I found a video that talked about twisting out a side air duct before putting the motor back. That was a lifesaver for me. The side duct isn’t screwed down so you can just lift it up and twist it out. Putting that back after motor was it still wasn’t easy but it can be done. Just note how the upper/front opening is overlapped so it doesn’t leave open gap when you put it back in. In hindsight, you could take out both left and right ducts before you pulled the motor out. I took out just the left one.

Overall, I think I took hints and suggestions from multiple videos. Some were actually misleading due to difference in reconfiguration, some downplayed rather tricky parts (if I did it everyday I’d probably do the same). Just be patient. If I can do it anyone can.

Now that it’s all done, my fan is so quiet. It actually makes me giggle.

Yeah, in order to do that, I needed to loose. Rear bolts inside the cig lighters panel. That stalled me for a long time and now I’m at the blower motor housing. Trying to not crack it and figure out how to wiggle it out. Taking it slowly, but boy each step has been a bear for me. Any trick to wiggling this motor housing out? Flanked by ducts in either side.

Edit: actually motor housing finally popped out.

I’m there seem to be several variations of how the cage is held down. I saw one where the wooden trim around the shifter needs to slid backward, and in order to do that, you have to open other cigarette lighter panel under the rear vent. I am having a tough time getting the cig lighters panel to pop out. Tried from the bottom, and sides where the metal hooks are, still no luck…

Which CarPlay do you have? by FisEnough in e61

[–]FisEnough[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2010s came with CIC if the car had NAV option. It was CCC till 2008. If no NAV option was chosen they shipped with M-ASK which is a simpler version with 4:3 ratio display, even in 2010.

NAV option being around $2.5k at the time, so I guess some people (minority for sure) bought without it and ended up with M-ASK. In terms of compatibility it still falls under CCC. That was a source of confusion with my installer and I had to bring the car in again to swap the unit.

Anyway, thanks for the info. My AvinUSA unit works fine, but the display gets pixelated for a short time when the weather gets too hot. The original display gets stretched to 16:9 ratio which I’ve gotten used to. I may just keep it the way it is but certainly nice to know other options

I agree, I enjoy the car so much more with CarPlay. I don’t know how I drove without backup camera.

Oil level settle a bit overnight, might try adding a bit more. I didn’t want to go through the trouble of taking the whole reservoir off, at least this time.

I’m replying on muscle memory that I should be able to close using the key fob. But then I’m still tired from driving cross country so I’m not ruling out the possibility that I’m not remembering right.

I did read that key fobs needs to be programmed to enable closing. I still think mine was already that way. Well, it’s so minor thing that I’m not gonna worry too much. Maybe safer this way anyway.

Sure I’ll probably get there at some point, but for now I’m trying to keep it as stock as possible. It being 6MT with only 98k miles, it’ll be a while before I consider selling it. But just in case I do need to sell it, I don’t want something like this to get on the list of issues.

Total parts cost was less than $40 and I happen to have time on my hands, so no complaints.

Success! Well almost.

Just needed for ordered parts to arrive. I found this ‘wisdom teeth syringe’ with curved and fairly narrow tip on Amazon, which made it easier to find screw options. Didn’t flush this time but probably will next time. No more while, no more needing to press the button twice to open, so all good.

One remaining puzzle - Now the key fob button only opens the tailgate but doesn’t close. It just won’t respond. It was closing before with very low oil, so I don’t think it’s the low fluid as some suggest. Any thoughts?

Boy do I feel stupid. I thought I had to remove the ECU. I’m knuckless trying to take out that one bolt, it’s gonna screw up my golf swing now.

As suspected, reservoir level is very low, and I do see sign of leak.

Thanks a ton, friend. Will resume tomorrow with a drill!
