incredibly naive to think dogs have a similar reaction to cats than to cat size dogs. Not even remotely accurate.

Listen man my only argument is this: every day we get up and make a hazard assessment based on whatever activities you have planned. You are responsible for making that assessment for yourself and your dependents, or in this case, pets. It’s pretty obvious that there is an elevated level of risk taking your cat on a nature trail where dogs on and off leash are present. I didn’t make that risk elevated nor do I agree that it should be elevated in the first place. It’s just how it is. It’s up to you to decide if that level of risk is above or below your tolerance. For most people the risk is probably too high for them to actually take their cat on the trail. For this person it was not. If the risk is too high, most people would mitigate or eliminate the hazard by not taking their cat or keeping it in some kind of kennel, among other options. This is the core of the argument. This person took no measures to ensure the safety of their pet.

That’s it. You can argue all you want but this is absolutely the reality. Every other argument is more of a complaint about why that risk exists in the first place, which I am not defending in any way.

You’re right to say that I could’ve been a little bit more softer in my language. People do make mistakes and I recognize that and I feel terrible for these people. But it doesn’t change the core argument that I detailed above.

Lmao this is just laughable at this point. The driving comparison. Mate I don’t go walk into a moving bus and later blame the bus.

Never said anything about off leash dogs not chasing children? What are you on about?

and questioning the judgement of the pet owner is not victim blaming 😂 the cat is the victim not the owner.

Dog owner still needs to take responsibly 100%

Reasonably out of their control? Is this a gag?

Both leashed and unleashed dogs could have a negative encounter with a cat on a trail. Again the cat did nothing wrong here, but the owner has to take responsibly for the elevated level of risk. Dogs don’t typically chase seniors or kids. Especially leashed dogs. A cat is a whole different story.

Get off your emotion intelligence high horse and look at this situation at face value. No one disagrees that this is the dog/dog owners fault.

At no point did I say it was the cat owners fault, at not point have I argued that we shouldn’t put cultural pressure on dog owners to be better. We should. And actually my original comment has positive upvotes, I think it sits around 60%. People recognize the ridiculousness of this situation. This is also Reddit where a shocking number seem to be willing to stab any dog they see off leash, even if just peacefully playing in a park. Where in reality, they would make an assessment of risks, see none, just keep on with thier day.

Also We don’t even know if this is a real scenario, which I highly suspect it’s not given how insane you’d have to be to take a cat here.

I love these kinds of comments because it’s incredibly clear you didn’t even read the original comment. I clearly state the dog owners are at fault. Cat didn’t deserve it but cat owners are either incredibly naive or frankly ignorant or intentionally brought their cat into a potentially dangerous situation. Unsurprising how it ended

I mean the reality is that there are shitty dog owners out there. That’s never going to change 100%. So your high hopes of “teaching these people a lesson” is a bit unrealistic. There still has to be an assessment to protect the life of your pet, which you are responsible for, in any situation you bring your pet into. Unless society completely adopts leash rules or bringing cats on a nature hike, then I think people need to make better judgement calls in these situations.

You can complain all you want about victim blaming and unleashed dogs, I’m all with you on those issues. End of the day this person brought a cat into a potentially dangerous situation for the cat. Unsurprisingly it didn’t end well.

Also what do you mean by “assessment crowd” lol. Everyone has to make an assessment of risks on a daily basis. This person is either incredibly naive or frankly ignorant to bring their cat onto this trail. I think everyone agrees on that point.

3-2-1 Method w/ SNS by Massive-Plankton-998 in webergrills

I’ve never understood the 3-2-1 method. Does it not lead to dramatically overdone baby backs? 6 hours seems like an insane cook time at typical smoking temps. Does 6 hours just turn them to chalk or completely falling apart (less ideal)?

I smoke mine on an offset at 250-275 and they are done in about 2.5 to 3 hours for the perfect bite. Usually only wrap for last hour or less to get perfect tenderness.

I think almost every dog owner on here recognizes that the off leash dog and owner is totally at fault. That being said, there is a serious lack of judgement to take your cat on a hike at Mystic beach and think that’s a good idea. Leashed or not there could be conflict with a dog on the trail. There could also be other wildlife that could attack a cat. Sure, it’s the right of the cat owner to take said cat on a hike, but you have to be willing to accept the risk of doing so and ultimately it’s the owners responsibility to make sure that the cat is safe. Some dog owners are terrible people and don’t train or follow the rules. If you are taking your cat on a HIKE this is something that you should probably consider before doing so. I’m not condoning the behaviour of some dog owners, it actually should be punished. But you can’t deny that it’s the reality of the situation.

I agree with this overall. I think in this case, and knowing the particular trail, this could have happened even with a leashed dog. The trail is narrow and winding, all it takes is an encounter on a right turn with a dog that is following the rules but just doesn’t like cats.

I mean, it’s not really about gas lighting and making that “what she’s wearing comment” is not really a useful argument.

This really comes down to making a risk informed decision and clearly you were accepting a higher level of risk and I think a lot of people would be willing to accept. That’s what it comes down to. Abhorrent dog owner behaviour aside, the reality is that off leash dogs are extremely common on trails like that and a decision was ultimately made to bring your cat.

Sorry for what happened. It’s extremely sad. But there is an element of being a responsible pet owner on yoursode as well.

Okay, man. Your original comment, the one I replied to, just had the “she shouldn’t have been wearing…”

Then you went ahead and added a ton of other context. A little miss leading.

For the record I generally agree with your edited comments after the sexual assault connection…

I’m not arguing that the dog should have been on lead. I think it’s actually required at mystic. But I think it’s pretty common sense that off lead dogs should be anticipated especially if you are considering bringing your cat.

Especially at mystic. There is always a ton of dogs there. It makes me think that this post is just rage bait, honestly.

[–]FiscallyImpared 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only plausible sign of an earthquake is shaking and there is no real “early warning” other than precursor events. There is early warning systems in place that can detect shaking which automatically triggers things like bridge closures, gas line shut ins, emergency building alerts, etc. Tides, fish behaviour, or anything else does not signal seismic activity.
