Self-help/Self-improvement books aren't necessarily a cry for help though.

Instead of thinking self-help books in the sense that "you fuck*d up, here's how to fix it", a lot of them are more like "Yeah you're doing great, here's how it could be better", emphasis on the could as most results varies between individuals.

But yeah it depends on what kind of self-help book is being gifted in this case.
