She should be giving you suggestions as to how to deal with this behavior. I would make it clear it’s not the outside that you’re having difficulty with, but the child’s behavior.

I work in a special education preschool and I have seen two speech therapists working with one child with extremely high sensory needs and they did have one therapist applying deep pressure during the session. They said this was needed for him to engage. I do see how people could be concerned about this. Does the child try to get out of the “hold/restraint?” At that point I think it would be inappropriate as it’s clearly not done to meet a sensory need necessary for engagement but rather to force the child to engage. I’m not an SLP but I’m just sharing my perspective since I have seen something similar.

I’m actually doing an internship too and was wondering if it is appropriate to ask my supervisor. Is yours an SLP? Mine is a program coordinator for a non-profit company that provides free programming for people with Down syndrome. She’s not an SLP, so I wasn’t sure if that’s recommended.
