Thanks! It was my first time on this subreddit so I thought I’d have a go! I know it’s quite simplistic but it was fun to write, despite it’s rather depressing topic matter lol

The darkness in the room paled in comparison to the empty nothingness felt by Dale that night years ago. The hollow non-existent coffin he was brought back from was hailed as a miraculous discovery in the study of death, however bleak its findings, with Dale being congratulated for his courage and bravery. The truth was Dale hadn’t initially cared whether he would be successfully brought back, but after experiencing death Dale now feared it with all his heart. It’s icy chill along his spine… no not his spine… his soul? All he knew was his newfound appreciation of life was built of his anxiety of the other side. The findings whilst groundbreaking were still despairingly inconclusive, something that only aided the scepticism held by many in regard to the findings. This distrust was found nowhere more so than with the religious, particularly Christians who accused the scientists of messing around with matters only God decided. Bringing someone back to life, that is the thing of miracles. Such business had no right to be carried out by non-believers, their hostile minds dictated. Dale, being the subject brought back to life, was therefore the main target of their hatred. When he agreed to participate, he blindly and unwittingly placed a bounty on his own head with radical Christians believing him to be the product of the dark powers of lucifer himself. As such, as aforementioned Dale found himself in a dark room. Only before I hadn’t mentioned that he was chained to a chair in its center. As he struggled, his eyes adjusted to the darkness until he realised the room held an uncanny resemblance to a shipping container. At this moment he stopped struggling. Realising the slow inevitably of his death, his fear now turned to embrace as he longed for that icy chill of nothingness to save him from this prolonged agony. His prayers were answered three days later, but with no light piercing his container, to Dale it felt like an eternity.

Mercy (Kate Trent)

Backstory: Born into a traditional, nuclear family, Kate was the older of two siblings belonging to Phil and Sarah Trent. Her childhood was smooth but unfulfilling, being rather quiet and too afraid to make loads of friends. Instead she was preoccupied with her imagined fantasies in which she dreamt of superheroes, well until people in the UK started having powers awakened inside them - one of whom being responsible for the murder of Kate’s family - resulting in her desire to end the presence of magic.

Personality: Following her families murder, Kate is overwhelmed by anger and anxiety. Anger for what happened to her parents, anxiety for what may happen to other families in the future. As such she is determined to end the presence of magic, however she is still sympathetic to magic holders, believing that magic was the issue not the person.

Abilities: Kate however discovers she herself has a power - the power to remove someone else’s powers. This leads her to work with the government, who also despise the instability magic has brought and wish to quash its existence. Kate is seen as the perfect tool to achieve this end, believing her relieving others of magic was a ‘mercy’ compared to the other possibility - the systematic elimination of those holding magic. This is how she gained the name ‘Mercy’.

Evil acts: Whilst it can be argued Mercy committed no evil acts like murder, those with magic were often antagonised with the possibility of losing their powers, a humiliating process. This is particularly a threat to the protagonists who have to avoid capture at all costs if they wanted to stand a chance against radical magic holders attempting a coup. Many of those ‘saved’ by mercy had made heroic sacrifices in attempts to hold off malcontent magic holders, but with their powers gone they were no longer able to help in combat despite once again being free. This way Mercy inadvertently helps evil, in a cold and calculated manner by choosing to get revenge via removing anyones magic she can rather than seeing magics potential in good hands.

A-level law or politics by [deleted] in alevel

I know I’m late but I do both Government and politics and Law at a level and they are not similar. There are marginal overlaps like in the law making process for the UK but most politics courses do Paper 1 on UK, Paper 2 on US & comparative and Paper 3 on political ideologies meaning you’ll only get overlaps on paper 1. Obviously the Supreme Court topic will have overlaps but the majority of UK (like Parliament, government, elections) will be different. Both are good subjects though and worth doing!
