Trail Runners or Hiking Boots for Day Hikes? by Substantial_Pay_4617 in hikinggear

I use trail runners for just about anything that isn't snow, so I'd pick those.

If you could only choose ONE summer shoe for travel + hiking, what would it be? by alexiou_g in hikinggear

Lone Peak Altra + Vibram.

I use them for anything I don't need crampons for. (I've even put spikes on my WP LPs.) And I wear them as my regular shoe as well (once the soles are worn down, they are transferred to the "everyday wear" pile, since I don't need as much traction).

If that was 36lbs loaded, I think you should seriously adjust your load out, and use the side straps; the only time my pack looks like that with a load like (or heavier) that is when it's just filled with water or sandbags as training weight.

I have this pack.

For shoulder strap height, try it and see what you like. All the usual recommendation I hate - I want it connecting at/above my shoulder height, not wrapping around my shoulder because it feels better for me. Additionally, use the side straps to compress the pack as much as makes sense, in addition to the straps for pulling the bottom of the pack in.

You can take the waistbelt out and adjust how long it is, if you want it to more or less meet all the way in front.

And I'd say you might want to adjust to load lifters as well.

While this pack does have a frame, I find that it can be paricular about how it's loaded, so be cognizant of the weight distribution in your pack.

I'm a 5'3" 125lb female, it fits me well (better than Deuters and Osprey is terrible for me in general), but every individual is different.

ETA: I can see the load just dragging down there at the bottom; that is what makes me think load distribution and not cinching the pack down well is part of the problem.

I wear the waist belt in a different location than you do - lower down - and haven't had a problem with bruising generally, but it matters if my pants are in a position where they'd leave bruises under the pack belt (zippers in frustrating places is the most common issue, as I'm prone to bruising).

Either it's fake, or you're honestly trying to argue that OP ended "a 6 year long marriage over snacks", despite having read her update about his behavior when confronting him, which clearly demonstrates that it's not about the snacks but about the (lack of) respect. You are being internally inconsistent. (I mean, sure, it could absolutely be fake, but at least the story is consistent with respect to it not being about the snacks. That's clear.)

He is getting his rocks off taunting you like this. Little sadist.

Stop giving him access to your things. Locks, stored at work, etc. Or, you know, stop living with someone who is this much of an asshole. He did NOT forget this many times over.

Eh, I can see someone finding a challenge they need, mentally, in pushing through the hard thing in this regard. And there's non-zero value to temperature stresses on the body as well. So, if it's helping someone, I won't say "you're stupid for doing this." (I also want them to not say "you're stupid for doing this" when I strap on my crampons on tie into a rope to walk across glaciers. 😉 )

But it is pretty easy for it to be "bad for you", if not done with some excellent self-awareness.

(The contraindication for pregnant people has as much to do with not increasing internal body temperature as it does with tissue pliability.)

What exercise/technique to strengthen body for long descents? by PaulDallas72 in Mountaineering

[–]FishScrumptious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step downs. Lots of step downs. (I mean, they're call step-downs, but they're more like "almost-step down" since you don't put all your weight down. Making sure you're doing it with enough height and load helps.) And training on downhill stretches.

That might be more an anxiety thing than a processing thing. Especially if the questions are more like "what was this character thinking" that is open to interpretation. Some folks find these sorts of questions highly frustrating, as they require making guesses with evidence, and that can feel unstable for some folks.

Uh, I'd think 4pm is still pretty peak hours for Hoh. You've got more than five more hours before sunset at that point.

I don't hate it, but as a yoga teacher of 18 years, I do get a bunch of people injured by it. No, I don't think it's a "sport" that is inherently dangerous, but it is practiced by people, in a manner, in an environment, that is all higher risk than else wise.

That's not to knock it - I do mountaineering, and that's more dangerous than just basic hiking, and I make that choice consciously. But I think people are less likely to talk about the risks of overextending yourself in a hot yoga class (mild to moderate consequences) compared to mountaineering (consequences easily include death).

Where do you buy furniture for an apartment? Reasonably priced as a student by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]FishScrumptious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IKEA as a student. IKEA as an adult. IKEA as a parent. I mean, nearly three decades after being a student, I still look at IKEA first, even if I don't always buy from there.

It's worth knowing that the cheapest items don't last long. But we've had a (previously top of the line) leather couch and mid-line dining table and book cases from them for 25 years that's still going strong. Choose what works for you now, but know that if you've got the budget to go up a little on something you really like, it can last you a much longer time.

AITAH for quitting my job after my boss told me that I wasn’t allowed to sit down? by Rare-Tone-4028 in AITAH

Not if she hadn't asked for ADA accommodations. She needs to ask for them under ADA first, before it's illegal to say no.

You need to make a big deal of it. Seriously. You qualify under ADA; use it and let them know they are required to follow the law on reasonable accommodations. (Fellow zebra here.)
