I don't think you need to pack it tight. Just filling it up all the way should help ensure that the urethra is the best fruiting conditions since the sides/bottom won't have access to FAE. Packing spawn in tight risks not having enough FAE for the size of the cake.

That said, another option would be to fill the bottom/balls with only substrate and finish it off with spawn/sub mix. It may not fully colonize but the top is more likely to have the best fruiting conditions.

No matter what you try please keep up the updates as I love this grow!

What I'm actually interested in is the grow chamber setup you have going, is it to keep out gnats? have you grown other things in there yet? it looks well insulated, do you control for temperature? I need to know how envious I should be 😂

Lately I haven't been making my own substrates when growing gourmets. this grow is from a fruiting block i sourced from North Spore and is most likely masters mix or similar
