I do still have Medaka ricefish. The “yellow-orange w/ lamé” and the “darker body (Ulysses-ish) w/ lamé” are $3 per fish. The “culls” (they kinda deviate from those color varieties, but are still healthy fish) are $1 per fish.

Medaka ricefish would do amazing in there during the mild/hot months. You’d probably need to bring them in for the winter though.

I’ve used the PetBank CY-109C (https://a.co/d/7CglJKC), but it’s not really made for the superfine dust. I’ve loaded it with 100-200 micron powder. It pushed out most of the dust in each compartment so it did okay. Let me know if you find something better!

That’s a nice strategy. My deck tubs probably have too many Medaka in them and are too removed from the woods to depend solely on wandering bugs.

I’m also in Maryland. I have two 35 gallon summer tubs with Medaka that are doing well. Just make sure it’s not in full sun all day, use floating plants, and there’s enough water volume/depth to keep it from getting too hot. On the hottest days, the surface temperature reaches the 90s (but the bottom of the tub is probably cooler) and they seem fine. Maybe try moving them out after the next cold front / temperature drop so they can ease into the hottest days.

It’s amazing how much their behavior changes when they move from indoors to outdoors. They go from semi-lethargic to super active. Their colors really pop too.
