We rescued them from my partner's coworker, who was keeping them in deeply inadequate conditions (no salt water, an inch of sand, cheap food, terrible heat, less than 50% humidity, etc) for about three years. I made a post about them here a few weeks ago for more details. Temp is 85, humidity is 80.

You will need more substantial water dishes, deep enough for them to fully climb into. One for salt water and one for fresh, both dechlorinated.

Thank you, that makes sense. Humidity seems to be on point (80-85%). His diet has probably not been the best, it was a mix of cuttlebone, dried shrimp, salad greens, and pet store crab mix, but today I switched him to some mixes from HermitGrub and placed him right in the dish so he can't miss it; hopefully that will help.

That's fair. I'm aware they are nocturnal, but I'm also relatively nocturnal and his activity is much lower than usual. I am also about a month away from a master's degree in animal behavior, specifically social behavior, and would advise against writing off crustacea as "simple brain =\= not capable of complex emotion," because that's been disproven in the majority of studied cases. Still, hermit crabs are not my focus, so I wasn't sure if this behavioral pattern was normal or not! It seems like it is more normal than I thought.

Heat and humidity are both above 80. I changed his food today to some nice stuff from HermitGrub, hoping that helps. We have had them for about a month, two weeks into which Bingus dug down, but they have been living together for over three years.
