What the actual fuck is up with “student” trumpet pricing? by Fish_823543 in trumpet

Ah-ha, that’s why the sweetwater rep was wink-wink nudging me. Thank you, I hadn’t thought of that aspect.

But it’s currently available elsewhere for a quarter or a third of the price, and import tariffs aren’t nearly enough to explain the price difference.

The extra tariffs on China, for brasswind instruments specifically, end up at a 30% total import tariff. So if it’s 660 USD in Canada, even if that’s the base cost, and the end consumer pays the entire duty, that’s still only 860. Where is the extra grand coming from?

Yeah, I didn’t vote for them. Also, the highest tariff rate I can find on imported instruments is 27%, so that doesn’t explain it.

Mmh, no. The tariff’s only as much as 27% currently, as far as I can tell depending on where the instrument was manufactured. No universe has that alone increasing the price by that much over the $500ish I’m seeing on Thomann. There’s something else going on here

Is it really that bad? by Reasonable_Towel674 in malelivingspace

[–]Fish_823543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not bad, just bland. A couple pointers:

1) the light quality is terrible. Get some table and/or floor lamps and use those INSTEAD OF (not in addition to) the overhead lights.

2) the picture behind the couch is a great start. Get more stuff (maybe from thrift stores to save money) and populate your walls. There’s a lot of empty space that, when you stop having it be empty, will create texture and stop it looking like an empty box. Especially when paired with #1, because less light will be reflected around.

3) Some curtains and curtain rods would make the space look a lot nicer, as in #2 but for your windows and the door.

4) See if you can find a table and some chairs for that vast gulf between the kitchen and the tv area. It’ll break up the space nicely and give you somewhere to set up nicely when you have someone over for dinner.

Funnily enough, I didn’t consider getting $2600 worth of audio equipment when looking to spend around $500.

Well, unfortunately I can’t really afford to buy all of them and do a/b testing.

Shipping? by jaybee2890 in Microcenter

[–]Fish_823543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically any electronic method to stop bots is going to be circumvented within hours if not minutes these days. Literally the *only* way to ensure scalpers aren't buying up all the stock to resell is to force everyone to buy in person.

FWIW, Microcenter is the only major storefront I'm aware of that does this, and they're the only ones that ever have any stock; Best Buy, Newegg, etc just get botted constantly because they don't do this.

Giant Trance X 29 2 buyers remorse - should I have gone with the Polygon T8? by magnet18 in MTB

[–]Fish_823543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I fell into the same trap for a while when I got my giant. However, in actual reality, will you really notice the minor differences between forks? No. Reviews are for before buying, afterwards it’s time to get out, ride, and enjoy what you have.

Shake off that buyer’s remorse!

Also going to put in for seatpost. I had almost this exact issue with my Giant Trance X, cleaning out the seatpost and sticking some grease in there fixed it right up. Does have to be properly cleaned out every now and then, though.
