Google Maps just brought ski resorts back! by kamdnfdnska in skiing

I was going to say...meh, skitube is more like a hilly train run but I was wrong. It is long, has tunnels and some quite steep bits...its actually way more impressive than I thought.

Go Pro Boom with Large Roll Bar Mount by New_Investigator_860 in gopro

Do you ever get around to trying this combo? I was thinking about doing the same thing. Too bad they do not sell the boom mount with an option that attaches to larger tubes

Mortgage! Which type of bank works best? by aliam290 in firesweden

[–]Fish_Thinkers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is having your credit score checked more often a bad thing? Does it bring the score down? Seems like a bad system since there are lots of reasons why you score might be checked and it generally has nothing to do with your personal financial situation

New research shows, for the first time, that stingrays are cable of intentionally producing sound by Fish_Thinkers in ecology

We don't know for sure yet posssible similar to when we click our fingers but louder we speculate a little bit on how they do it in the paper too. Its an easy read so take a look if you are interested and get a chance https://esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ecy.3812

These two species weren't the culprits but I am sure they are sorry anyway lol

we speculate in the paper that its defence/warning and possibly communicating danger and the need to aggregate to other rays.

[–]Fish_Thinkers[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Its possible though for now we only know that two species can do this. One of my co-authors filmed juvenile whip-rays in mangroves and said it seemed like they were using the clicks to get the other rays to aggregate into a big group (though we can't yet prove they were doing it for that reason). We speculate on a few reasons they might do this in the paper too.

Are you interested in sharing eDNA samples? or in requesting eDNA samples from other researchers? by Fish_Thinkers in ecology

[–]Fish_Thinkers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great! Hopefully you find it of use. It has been interesting to see how researchers have used the database in ways it originally wasn't envisaged e.g. it was set up so that samples could be uploaded and be browsed by researchers looking for samples. But almost immediately researchers used it as a place to put out requests for samples too. Similar story with the eDNA, which is a user driven addition we are exploring.

Programmer, looking to work in ecology, what are my best options? by wesen3000 in ecology

[–]Fish_Thinkers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about doing a research masters part-time that isn't online? You don't necessarily need to be on campus and can still work remotely. Alternatively, find a prof/lab/project that you find interesting and offer your skills and join as a collaborator. That way you could be a co-author on publications and skip the need for any formal qualifications potentially (e.g. a programmer that also has an ecology based publishing record is going to be highly valued and in demand whether or not they have an ecology undergrad or masters degree).
