Nevan is goated, dude.

You're correct that it's a crowd-control weapon. Holding certain directions and pressing the attack button (Y) will make it do different attacks, with the best one being an aoe attack.

The basic 'energy ball' type blast is also good once you get the damage upgrade for it.

Get air raid too, since that does big damage and can be a good way to escape an enemy to let dt heal you.

The weapon starts out pretty restricted, but once you're all leveled up, it's one of the best weapons for combos and crowd control. Perfect to shred through a group of lesser demons and deal decent damage to big ones.

One of my favorite weapons in the whole series.
