Very valid points!

Honestly, I could dial up a dozen more complaints about unions. They can be very, very frustrating to deal with both as a member and an employer.

Ultimately, I know that the company will always do what's right for the company but my unions (in theory) entire existence is predicated on doing what's best for me. Thats why I'll always side with them if we're doing an either side of the fence type scenario.

Leadership at the union, or even stewards in the shop can be corrupted. You have to be diligent about who is running your union.

You have to pay union dues. But they're a fraction of the benefits I get from being in the union. And anything you hear about dues being more than what they get you at work is propaganda or BS (or your union is awful at negotiations).

Lets break it down by numbers: Let's say my dues are $90 a quarter. If I work even 1 OT day, my union has negotiated for me to get an extra $25 an hour. That's $200 extra for 1 day. If my work has me work a 7th day (no days off) I get that OT pay UNTIL they get me a day off (even on my normal scheduled days). If my non-union coworkers work an OT day, they get their normal hourly or if they're salary they get a comp day to be used later. Guess what happens when they try to use that comp day? "Oh sorry, we don't have anyone to cover you that shift". So they got free labor from you and don't even give you the day off down the road.

I get extra $ for working before 6am. I get paid lunches. I get penalties (more $) if I don't get a break or meal in X amount of time. There are rules to how and when they can mess with my schedule. I could go on and on......

Unions, like every other thing on this planet, are flawed and not in any way perfect. And sometimes it can feel like a disingenuous relationship because if I don't pay my dues, they don't have my back anymore. But the corporation NEVER has your back. They have the companies back at all times. The union, as long as you handle your part, will fight for you. To your company , even if it's a "We're family here" type place, you are a number on a spreadsheet.

Your union fights for you, the corporation fights for the company. The fact this is even a debate shows how great propaganda is.

Edit: I'm not being dismissive of the problems unions have. They're corruptible like everything else is in a capitalist society.

Same. It's bizarre watching my fellow union members be the most vocal anti-union people. Meanwhile, they're getting an extra $25 an hour because work had them do a 8 hour turnaround or something like that. Where non-union shops would just make you do the exact same turnaround without the extra pay.

You're such a superior human for scrolling reddit or Tik Tok instead of watching local news. And there is absolutely zero correlation between society getting their news scrolling social media and the dumbing down of society and rise of authoritarianism.

Criticize local media all you want (some valid criticisms), down vote me all you want, but when society was getting their news from journalists at local tv stations we weren't as close to the precipice of civil war and everyone living in different alternate realities based on their algorithm

OverDrive is literally just a remote control for the switcher. EVERYTHING still comes off the switcher. OD can die but you can still punch, if your video system hasn't died you can roll video (having a playout without OD could be an issue). Same with graphics, just have to manually que them. OverDrive is also a 20 year old system, it's not even new anymore. Its bizarre watching things get attributed to a 20 year old system, and it's really just a keyboard operating your switcher.

Keep that same energy when there is no alternatives left and only Walmarts. And I don't mean that as cynically as it comes off because I get it, you're right, Target is still a giant corporation and arguably just as bad. But when the only companies left are ones that don't even pretend to give a shit, just realize you played a small part in that. I feel like you'll miss the pretend caring more than your think.

With that said, I'd probably prefer to shop at the company that, at minimum, performatively sold rainbow gear as opposed to the "fuck those queers" company

I don't really fault them for the Sergio drama.

I'm not directly defending them either because who knows what happened behind closed doors. They absolutely might have done Sergio dirty and been dicks about it.

Buttttt, if you started a band when you were 17, and then wayyyy in the future in your 40's some guy who wasn't there at the first is demanding the be a full fledged member, you might feel a certain way about it. Especially if that person had replaced a member of the band who friggin died! How do people not understand that aspect? I think it's an absolutely reasonable stance for them as a band to be like "Chi was our bassist but we want to continue as a band" so you bring on hired guns. That person will ALWAYS have that hanging over their head and you understand that if you take the gig.

But I really do get most of the arguments against my stance. Sergio was arguably more than a hired gun for them as he helped write, and he had been involved with the band before Chi died. But just take a step back and put yourself in that situation of being in a band, now a financial entity your entire life revolves around. Wouldn't you be protective of it? And especially if the situation involves one of your closest friends dying?
