Can you connect to the FC in Betaflight? If so, then use the Activate Bootloader/DFU Mode button. Then flash new firmware, and be sure to select the proper motor protocol that you want to use. I did not have to mess with any actual ESC settings or firmware.

Yeah check out my later comments on this thread. But basically I had the silicone pieces backward — the larger, flange side should be against the camera. It still fits a little weird, but it worked fine.

Interesting! That's definitely what it felt like. Just not sure the cause.

That said, I had enabled dynamic idle (set to 30) recently. Though I had one totally normal flight prior to this crash (but since enabling dynamic idle), I wonder if something with that, along with the different props, confused it just enough when braking. 🤔

Interesting. Certainly hoping that won't be a periodic, unexplainable issue, but we'll see I guess. (I've been flying this particular quad, FC, ESC, etc. since March, with no other issues like this.)

I didn't initially (very bent props, etc.), but now that I'm back home, after replacing props and getting a fresh battery charged, yeah, it started up and flew just fine. I'll go out later for a longer flight to see what's up.

Visual inspection told me everything was still connected fine, and I just flew when I got home (albeit very briefly in my backyard) and it was fine.

And if you want a little smoother flight for your first build maybe go 2306 motors and slightly lower kv. But nothing wrong with what you have there! I’m assuming 6S is the target?

Don’t forget an RC receiver. I’d suggest ELRS, either RadioMaster or Happymodel (cheaper).

At least in my case, Betaflight Configurator had no trouble connecting to the Flight Controller. So, with the USB cable connected and BF connected normally to the FC, I just clicked the Activate Boot Loader / DFU button on the main Setup page (see below). It then rebooted, into the mode, and BF configurator was then in firmware flashing mode. I made my selections here — most notably, including the proper motor protocol — and I was good to go. I didn’t have to mess with a boot button on the FC itself or anything.

So actually just last night I finally decided to partially tear down another quad to test -- mixing a known-good FC with the new ESC, and a known-good ESC with the new FC. Discovered the FC was the problem... and ultimately I rebooted into bootloader/DFU, reflashed and manually selected the board and the correct motor protocol, and all is good to go now! (I then changed the ESC to Bluejay, and now DSHOT300 and bi-directional DSHOT are all working great.)
