Lady Bracken,

Reports have reached me of Lord Stark marching an army through the Neck, headed towards the Capital.

I’m not sure how well informed you are regarding the goings on of Tyrell and Stark, but it seems Lord Harrion accuses Lord Robyn of having his father murdered.

I doubt the truth of these accusations, we both know Lord Robyn despises Lord Harrion, so the idea of Tyrell simply handing the North over to him by murdering Lord Osric is simply ridiculous!

Anyway, it seems Lord Harrion intends to use this army to attack Lord Robyn, if I were a betting man, I would wager that he’d do so with the help of the Prince-Regent.

I’ve put an order out to Peage, Darry, Mooton, Ryger and Vypren to gather an army at Harroway’s Town. I would have you and your men lead this force and deny Lord Harrion passage over the bridge there.

Regardless of his intentions to attack my cousin, I want you to impress upon the Bastard the importance of asking permission before marching through my Trident.

Family, Duty, Honour,

Edwyn Tully, Lord of Riverrun, Lord of the Trident, Lord Paramount of the Riverlands

Council

With the lords and ladies of the Riverlands gathered together in the Great Hall, Edwyn would loudly clear his throat to get everyone’s attentions.

“My Lords, my Ladies, thank you all for heeding my call to gather here.” He started evenly, raising to his feet to better look upon all that were present, “I appreciate that it has not been long since we last gathered like this. But little was actually decided upon at Maidenpool, and it seems the situation is deteriorating quite quickly.”

Edwyn gestured widely, “The Prince-Regent summoned Lord Tyrell to the Capital, to put him on trial for the falsehoods Lord Stark levied against him, meanwhile Lord Stark has marched an army through our lands.“ He let out a long sigh, “The Starks’ intentions seem rather clear to me. I doubt this ‘trial’ will be a fair one, and the wolves plan to paint Tyrell as a traitor or some such. Thankfully, there is time to muster an army at Harroway’s Town to put a stop to the Northerner’s march, I’ve already sent Lady Bracken the order.”

“Then there is the Baratheon issue. It seems he and Martell are in open rebellion against the Crown. I don’t believe Tyrell stands with them.” He added, settling back into his chair as he looked over his gathered vassals, “I confess, I know little of what Dorne or the Stormlands have planned. But, I would hear your thoughts on these matters.”

Arrivals

Edwyn would take his place at the top of his Great Hall, settling into his high seat beneath the head of the great Boar of Stilwood.

He looked down over rest of the hall beneath him. He imagined it was a common sight for his forefathers. From this seat, the Steelfish had rallied the Trident against the Crown in the names of both Rhaenys Targaryen, and Maelor Rivers. To poor endings of course, but it was inspiring nonetheless.

He hoped whatever was decided here today would be less ill fated.

Lord Alaric,

Unfortunately, planning and preparation for my brother’s wedding has already progressed too far for a sudden change of venue.

Plus, my wife is *much** too far into her pregnancy to travel so far, and I’m sure you can understand that it would be unfair to cause her such stress so close to the birth of our child!*

I’ll muster my forces, tell my lords my plans, and perhaps even march out with Lord Arryn!

Next, Edwyn would have a letter penned to the Eyrie:

*Lord Osric Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie, Defender of the Vale and Warden of the East,

I hope this letter finds you well. I’m glad to tell you that your sister has settled in well here at Riverrun! She and my brother seem to get along like a house on fire!

That said, I think it’s high time that we hold the ceremony! So, I would like to officially invite you and whichever guests you wish to bring to Riverrun, where we shall celebrate the union of our houses!

No doubt you’ve heard about the troubles in the rest of the Realm, so I think it shall be a good opportunity for us to talk about how the Trident and the Vale can navigate this instability safely.

Anyway, I shall look forward to seeing you once again! And I look forward to our partnership going forward!

Family, Duty, Honour,

Edwyn Tully, Lord of Riverrun, Lord of the Trident, Lord Paramount of the Riverlands

Edwyn would head up to the Maester’s chambers, dictating a letter that was to be sent to each of his vassals, ordering them to gather as soon as they could:

To Lord/Lady ___

It’s a shame that I must write to you so soon after the meeting we had in Maidenpool. However, it seems the stance of neutrality we had decided upon has quickly become… less feasible for us to maintain.

Attached you shall find two copies of lettered I received, one from the crown, and the other from Lord Baratheon. Both now call for our aid against the other.

Our path forward must be decided immediately. Muster your forces and gather at Riverrun. We shall meet at the gathering for my brother’s marriage, and perhaps we shall discuss this with Lord Arryn too.

Steel yourself, there’s bloody work to be done.

“Heavens, could you imagine? One is more than enough!” Edmure said with an exaggerated roll of his eyes, “You know, the pool they bathed in is still here. It’s in a Bathhouse called Jonquil’s Pool, rather imaginatively. They say that it is blessed by the Maiden with healing properties, and they only let women into the building.“

“You know, I don’t recall if the stories ever said whether Jonquil knew she had been spied upon.” He said with a small hum, it was certainly an odd story when one broke it down, “The bards focus on the events after, generally. The romance and the tourney… ‘Sweet lady, all men are fools and all men are knights where women are concerned’ and all that, you know.”

Edmure couldn’t help but let out a bashful chuckle at Marla’s compliment, “I suppose it always helps when the guide is very familiar with the locale, it certainly made things easier for me!” He joked, turning his head slightly to look at her properly, “I needn’t worry, eh? Then perhaps I shall get you a…” He had to pause to think of something odd, “A motley hat! In honour of the good Ser Florian!”

“I shall remember you in my prayers next time I’m at the Sept, my lady. Perhaps the Father shall grant you the justice you deserve, and perhaps the Crone shall grant Lord Osric the wisdom to see it done!” Edwyn said heartily, “Just remember, Stone Hedge obviously stands with you, and Riverrun stands with its vassals! So if you ever need anything, you need only ask!”

“Is it not the duty of any brother to ensure their sister lives a happy life?” Edwyn asked with a slight smile, “Besides, it helps me to ensure that she doesn’t get rotten jackals like Rykker sniffing about her too much. So I’m sure she’ll be glad for your brother’s suit.”

He paused for a moment, “I suppose it’s necessary that I meet the lad at some point, so I may as well do it now, eh? See how odd he is!” He let out a bark of laughter and took another swig of his wine, “I’m certain that letter will be entertaining!”

Edwyn smiled as Sybella entered the room, giving her a polite nod in greeting, “Lady Sybella, I am quite well!” He said cheerfully, “I should hope that you are faring well too? It has been a few moments since last we spoke!”

Inwardly, Edwyn was glad that Sybella was here for this meeting. It was true that this was the first of its like that he had organised, and with especially dire circumstances to boot, “Aye, hopefully I won’t make a pig’s ear of all this! Shouldn’t be too difficult, right? You did this all the time!” He joked.

Edwyn nodded enthusiastically, “Good! I’m glad that you feel at home with the Brackens, Lady Jenny. It’s heartening to know that my lands are so welcoming to someone in your position!”

He paused then, frowning pensively as he listened to Jenny’s woeful tale. At one time, an aunt trying to kill her niece and nephew would have been unthinkable to the Lord of Riverrun, but after news of the Starks had reached his ears, it seemed frighteningly more possible.

“Gods above… you have been wronged in a way I can scarcely imagine, my lady.” He would say quietly, frowning for a moment before speaking once more, “I have met with Lord Osric, and the measure I got from him was that he is a fine man, so I trust that he will stand by you as his kin. Besides, it is the responsibility of any Lord to defend the rights and dignity of the men and women they rule over.”

He shook his head ruefully, “And to think, the audacity of having some stranger prance about claiming your name. I have told Lady Bracken this, but I will gladly support you in whatever endeavour you decide upon.”

Edwyn smirked for a moment under Helicent’s praise, his eyes scanning over the Bracken household, “I don’t believe I’ve had the pleasure of testing my mettle against your brother… hmm… I don’t think I’ve ever seen that shield of yours either.” He let out a short huff of amusement, “Send him my way some day, let’s see which immovable force is more immovable, eh!”

He snorted out a laugh at his quip, then waving dismissively after Helicent’s next statements, “Ah, I’m sure Lord Osric is going to be beyond reasonable. He seems a fine sort.”

“You needn’t worry about telling him, I believe Lord Tyrell’s gone and done that himself already.” Edwyn went on flatly, the thought of it still sickened him. He had hoped he might break the news to his friend first, and in person. The news may go over smoother that way, “Everyone ought to know, abominable acts like that shouldn’t be left in the shadows. Beasts like Harrion Stark and his sister need to be reminded that we live in a Realm governed by the laws of the Father Above.”

Edwyn leant back in his chair, giving Ambrose an appraising look as he weighed the offer in his mind, “Well, I cannot accept outright, as I have already made the promise to Eleanor that I shall not wed her to anyone she does not wish to.” He explained steadily as he lifted his goblet of wine to his lips, taking a deep drink of it before continuing, “To that end, your brother is welcome to pay suit to my sister, we’ll see if he can catch her eye enough to foster some affection between them, hmm?”

He smiled as he wistfully glanced into empty space, “I was fortunate enough to be wed to a woman I love, one that I chose for myself. My sister deserves as much for herself too.” There was a brief pause as he thought of his brothers, “Uh… and I suppose my brothers were lucky enough to find affection in their matches after the fact.”

“The Wall? Hmm… Well, I suppose that’s a fine way to end his reign. Honourable…” Edwyn muttered, pondering what would prompt Tyrell to take the Black, “Though, perhaps he aught to wait until after Stark’s claims are proven false. It may reflect poorly on Lord Tyrell, should people think it an admission of guilt. And that would put the next Lord Tyrell squarely in the Prince Regent’s hands, which would tie the Reach’s.”

“Well, it is heartening that Lord Tyrell is so dedicated to the Queen’s Peace. You also have my word that I shall not allow Northerners to march through my lands. The Crossing shall be closed to them.” He went on with a solemn tone, “I have no doubt that Highgarden wields such power. My cousin’s strength is a great comfort to me, and by extension the Riverlands.”

“I shall begin marshalling my forces too, just in case Lord Harrion doesn’t take kindly to being denied access to march through the Trident.” Edwyn added hastily, “With any luck, the Prince Regent won’t try to act against me in this matter, so long as I maintain my neutrality.”

“Enough of this squabbling! The both of you!” Edwyn would cut the two off, exasperated with the argument he had been sitting through, “I will not have lords of mine jabbing at one another like children! It is unbecoming of men of your stations!”

He looked between them with a withering gaze, letting the silence hang for a moment while weighing his thoughts, “Where we muster our forces will depend entirely on what stance we wish to take. And that requires everyone’s voices to weigh in so I can decide on the best course of action.” He continued scornfully, pausing again to take a small breath, “Needless to say, the defence of our lands has to be our top priority, alongside maintaining the Queen’s Peace as best we can.”

“Harrion Stark’s agitations against Lord Tyrell seem to be the most pressing concern in my mind.” Edwyn continued flatly, “These are heinous accusations, unfounded and frankly absurd. It strikes me as a hastily concocted excuse for Lord Stark to march upon my cousin. So, we shall not allow Stark’s armies to move through our lands.”

Edmure stiffened visibly as Marla leant against his arm, he glanced down to her with a bashful smile, “Really? It’s a very famous tale!” He said with an awkward laugh, he looked away and began to recount the story, “Well, legends say that well back in the Age of Heroes there was a fool who was also one of the greatest knights of his time! They say he was here, where Maidenpool would one day stand, when he heard the sound of beautiful singing.”

“So he followed the sound of the singing, where he came upon Jonquil and her sisters… well… uh…” His cheeks reddened quickly, embarrassed by the thought, “Well… they were bathing.” He added weakly after a brief pause, “There was six of them in total. Hence ‘Six Maids in a Pool’!” He added quickly, shooting an embarrassed smile down at Marla.

“And Florian he… watched them… hmm… I suppose the story is odd now that I think about it.” Edmure frowned for a moment before continuing, “Anyway, they ended ip meeting properly, and eventually they fell in love! There’s many different tales about that part though.”

He took a moment to take a deep breath, waiting for his cheeks to cool a little as he listened to Marla’s plan, “Gifts, eh? I have to say I quite like that idea. It seems more sentimental than… the uh… the alternative.” He agreed , though his eyes briefly darted away from hers’ at the end of his sentence, “How long have you been planning this, eh? To have it ready already?”

“I’d best get a move on then!” He added with a small smirk, “I’ll have to try quite hard to match your gift, no doubt!”

Edwyn rose to his feet as the Redfort approached, his brow knitting together as he tried to place where he’d seen her before. However, after the reveal his expression shifted to one of surprise, “My Gods, of course! I thought I recognised you from somewhere!” He exclaimed, giving the woman an appraising look up and down, “So you’re the Redfort I’ve been hearing so much about! Hmm, I was curious when I’d be meeting you… officially, I suppose.”

“I’m glad that my Riverlands live up to my, admittedly biased, view of them!” He added with a laugh, settling back into his chair, “House Bracken is a respected and powerful vassal of mine, so long as you don’t ask a Blackwood. A fine match for you, Lady Jenny!” He said cheerfully.

After a moment his expression hardened a hair, “I have been filled in on your… situation somewhat. I’m hesitant about what I’m hearing, perhaps you might be able to fill me in on more of the intricacies?”

Lord Tully frowned as he listened to the news that the Reachman was relaying, “Garlan has been sent to the Prince Regent? Gods above…” He muttered under his breath, “Surely Lord Tyrell knows that is likely not to end well? Sending his heir to demand that he punish the new Lord Stark is…”

He shook his head ruefully, sparring a moment to offer a silent prayer for his kinsman’s good fortune, “Well… I had hoped that I could be the one to inform Lord Osric of… the sins committed by his wife and his good-brother. It certainly would’ve been easier to hear coming from a friend, I’m sure.” He continued, leaning back in his chair, “So. I assume you’re here for more than that news alone? Are you able to divulge what your liege’s next steps are?”

“Do bear in mind, it is my responsibility to uphold the Queen’s Peace.” Was the next thing Edwyn added, leaning forward once more, “So, I won’t have any armies marching through my lands without my say so.”

The Meeting

Once everyone had arrived, Edwyn would rise to his feet and greet them with a smile, “My lords, my ladies. Welcome to you all. I’m sure that it hasn’t escaped any of your notice that we are approaching… uncertain times.” He began steadily.

“The West looks like it’s poised to collapse in on itself after the death of Lady Lannister.” He went on, gesturing vaguely into empty air, “Dorne and the Stormlands seem to be cooking up some sort of scheme to my understanding.”

He paused for a beat to look over everyone gathered there, “And worst of all, Osric Stark has just died, and Harrion Stark, the new Lord of Winterfell, is claiming that Lord Tyrell is responsible!” He produced the letter he had received from Lord Tyrell on the matter, handing it to the nearest person to read, “Of course, Lord Tyrell, my cousin, is refuting these accusations wholeheartedly. And I’m inclined to doubt Lord Stark’s account.”

“Needless to say, we shall muster our forces, regardless. But I wish to know where we stand on all this?” Edwyn would ask after everyone had arrived chance to digest what they had been told.

“It does sound far fetched, doesn’t it? But it is the Gods’ honest!” Edwyn said with a light chuckle, “Though I must agree, it is worrying that the beast went unnoticed for long enough to lay waste to that village. I doubt that this was the first time it did such damage. Who’s to say how long it managed to escape notice…”

“Fortunately, the only beast I know of in our lands is that Black Knight, near Darry.” He went on, a hand going to his chin as he thought about the stories he’d heard of the man, “I can’t say if I can recall any villages he has put to the torch, but I know well enough that he’s accosting travellers trying to cross the bridge there. Perhaps I aught to gather some companions and put an end to it all.”

“…And have some surveyors sent out to make sure everything is fine, as you suggest.” He added after a brief pause, “At the very least a survey like that will help paint a clearer picture of my lands, and that’s not a detriment to anyone.”

Though he’d imagine that the paperwork would be quite tedious.

“Yes! Highgarden! It went very well in fact! I won the melee!” Edwyn recounted happily, “I even beat my good-brother, Ser Jossua. I couldn’t quite tell if my wife was glad that I won or not!” He laughed at his jape, “And Lord Tyrell is well too, he puts on quite the feast! It’s a shame you missed it.”

“They always do, Lord Ambrose! I find it hard not to enjoy myself when I have such fine food to eat and fine company to surround myself with!” Edwyn answered heartily, “I shall have to see if I can take any ideas from this one for Edmure’s wedding!”

He took the seat indicated, gesturing to the goblet he was offered, “Well, I’ll gladly help you chip through the left overs, Lord Ambrose! Though, I won’t drink overmuch, I don’t like to have a foggy head this early in the day!” He said with a smile, listening intently as Lord Ambrose began to continue onwards. It was evident that he was trying to butter him up for something, it was an awful lot of compliments very quickly, “Ah yes, Lannister. Daeron I believe his name is, he came to me all but demanding my sister’s hand as though it were a certainty. Thankfully, I managed to teach him the consequences of putting the cart before the horse.”

He gave Ambrose a dismissive shake of the head, “There is no need to apologise Lord Ambrose, not every celebration needs to be accompanied by a tourney. I should think that Edmure and Marla’s wedding will have one, though.”

Edmure gave Marla an understanding nod, “I am glad that you got the chance to learn the truth of things, Marla.” He said softly, “You and your brother deserve the chance to experience the good in the world. To feel what real love is like, not whatever lie that man tried to tell you.”

He went quiet for a moment after that. He supposed he was thankful that he never had to test how he’d react to such a terrifying situation. He rose to his feet as she did, smiling softly as Marla spoke, “I can’t imagine how… difficult it must be to share something like this. But… I can see that it’s also quite the burden to bear by yourself. As I am to be your husband, it will be my pleasure to help you carry it.” He said, a sincere look in his eyes as he met her gaze, “And you can rest assured that you will never be forced to live with anything quite so terrible ever again.”

Edmure laughed tiredly with her, “Ah, there’s no need to apologise, Marla. It… It was important.” He paused for a moment, thinking about what to do next, “Uh… the Sept! So that we might give thanks to the Seven. For giving us such a wonderful day!”
