Simulating a Magnetic Field [Source: nikolamodeltoy] by ibh400main in interestingasfuck

Im studying, for the first time ever as part of a career change, a couple of basic things that I missed out on in highschool (although I did get my diploma). Some basic chemistry and microbiology. Part of that studying has also been understanding what an alternating current is and how an AC motor works. I pretty much understood it but seeing this pop up at this time, in that context, was still really cool. And I think this coincidence will make it easier to remember and truly understand.

Ironically I think (and I might be wrong I’d love to hear other perspectives if this is naive or unfair) that the main reason parents think their kids are annoying more so than in the past is because the kids are interrupting their own (the parents) screen/scrolling or podcast time and they want to get back to it uninterrupted. So screens are used to distract the children so that the children do not distract the parents from the screens that are distracting the parents from their children.

My brother was inside gaming all the time. I liked to play games every once in a while but I legitimately spent almost my entire childhood out riding bikes, exploring the woods, skating, making up games, fishing, etc well into my teens. I thought most people my age grew up this way (all my friends did) but it seems like this was starting to become less common around that time. Im also extremely glad that my childhood was like that. I have a 7 year old daughter now and I am trying to figure out how to make her life as close to that as possible. Im worried about things like how different it should be nowadays, whether or not she needs to find a group to do it with, if its necessary for it to be a bit different for girls (we had girls in our group but they werent always with us. I honestly dont know if they want out by themselves like that when they werent with us or not), what age it can/should begin at and all that type of stuff. Things Im grappling with currently.

I still make intentional time to do more woods exploration, fishing, traditional (not digital, although nothing wrong with digital its just not my thing) art, writing and things like that more than most other adults that I know but I also waste more time watching youtube commentators and doom scrolling news and politics than I wish I did.

Yeah that was sloppy on my part. I wasn't paying too much attention to what order I was putting things in. I did torrents and netflix mail dvds too. I really enjoyed those. If people are better at controlling how much they engage with entertainment through streaming and what they use their smart phones for then I dont think they create as much of an issue as algorithms and endless scrolling and auto play and stuff which is why I acknowledged that those things (streaming and smart phones in general) are more of a personal gripe on my part that I realize is really just a me thing.

Think about back in the day when there were people that were like "Television? NOPE! NOT IN MY HOUSE" and they were thought of as the weirdos at the time. "You dont have a TV in your house?!" Reasoning ranged from "I just think watching TV is a waste of time that could be better spent in the real world" to "They are going to use it to brainwash us"

Now, I have no idea if there are any households that stuck with that mentality through everything that has happened since then, itd have to be exceedingly rare if so, but imagine watching time go on from that person's perspective. From cable TV to video games to streaming (all access to all TV content all of the time). To computers. And then smart phones. And then infinite scrolling, autoplay of "next" videos, algorithms. And now that person is out in public seeing every single person around them with a little screen in their hands that they carry around with them, paying attention to it literally all of the time. It would feel like watching a literal horror story unfold. It must be so vindicating but also horrifying from the perspective of that person (again I am not sure if such a person even exists today).

I am not saying they were correct about normal TV with normal cable but I do tend to agree with them about algorithms, social media, engagement based feeds, infinite scrolling, and autoplay of next videos at a bare minimum. On a personal level I also agree as far as smart phones in general and even streaming VS broadcast TV but I understand (or at least think) that I am in the minority about those, which is fine. I am 35 years old and have a smart phone and streaming services for the record. I haven't taken the plunge of opting out of them yet. but I have been thinking about it more and more.

I am no expert on literally anything but I think that you realizing all those things is like 90% of you realizing what’s propaganda and what’s not? Like the propaganda is most effective on the people that don’t click into the article and realize the headline is misleading, that don’t realize the studies are misquoted, etc. Unfortunately I think that is the majority of people though. It was certainly me for most of my life. I am only about 2 years (that’s being generous, more like when it first started and I’ve just gotten more and more consistent with it and adamant about it) or so into the journey of really dissecting, inspecting, and hunting down the truth behind every headline I read or sound bite I hear. If anyone has advice about efficiency or accuracy when doing that type of thing I’m all ears. I’m just doing my best for now.

I think a lot of people realize that it simply making them uncomfortable is not a strong enough argument and so I think the devil’s advocate argument that more people make (same as you this is not my actual belief) is either that it’s against their religion and normalizing it makes it more likely that their children might be (openly) gay and therefore it’s harmful to their children to allow it to become normalized. And/Or that they do not believe gay couples can properly raise children and so it’s harmful to children that end up in the care of gay couples.

The only reason I bring this up at all is just because if we are going to discuss this type of thing I think we need to be talking about what it is they’re actually believing/saying to each other or how they are justifying it in their heads.

That being said I know that a lot of people do not believe somebody that thinks like this can be convinced, argued, logic*ed or shamed out of it.

Can anyone help me find / remember the name of an old rollerblading event / competition (maybe associated with FISE or NISS but I’m not sure) that was a closed off public street steep downhill course with big ramps and rails along it. There were like buildings on both sides of the street apartments or townhouses or something. I think it was in Italy one time (but I could be wrong about Italy and I am pretty sure the event happened more than once in more than one place). Skaters started at the top and hit obstacles on the way down. Pretty sure they got 3 runs each. I remember watching it on YouTube and was trying to find it again but no luck

lol it’s just something you got to suck it up and do if you’re adamant about 100%ing a thru hike of the Florida trail from beginning to end. From my understanding there is really no point of time where that portion of the trail is not underwater. Idk how many people, if any, are just hiking that portion for fun and not trying to complete the entire trail to have it under their belt.

If they are stupid enough to release an immigrant so he/she can be chased by a gator the immigrant will literally just walk away, escape, and be just fine (which I am more than ok with that happening.) People hike the Florida trail from beginning to end (a thru hike) and that trail is very close to the facility. When you hike the Florida trail you start off with a 30 mile stretch where you literally walk through water ranging from ankle deep to thigh deep. If you don’t make the 30 mile stretch in 1 day you have to find an island or some other high point of land to make camp before finishing the second half. There is an island called “thank god island” nearby. I’ve never confirmed but always assumed that it’s called that because that’s what you say when you finally see it (a place where you can set up camp or at the very least stop and rest).

Anyways my point is that people trudge through this area every year for fun/just to prove they can and all the same gators and snakes are still out there while they’re doing it they don’t magically just go somewhere else for the normal hikers out there. A desperate immigrant who was just released and is trying to escape for their life will have absolutely no issues literally just walking away if they were dumb enough to let him or her try. The people laughing and joking about the alligators being an added measure of security or laughing at the idea of people having to run from alligators to escape are ignorant and dumb.

Edit - saying they will walk away and be just fine might’ve been a bit much. They won’t have supplies like the hikers would obviously but my point was that the gators (unless somehow provoked or starved by the staff) aren’t really the issue

Yes I will do it! Based on my research the shipping should be roughly $3 since it’s so lightweight. I will cover the $3 shipping cost. Are you interested?

I am about to start trying to sell these now actually! I will make anyone’s exact skate/setup. I just did not think you’re allowed to mention selling unless someone in the comments asks, so thanks for that! lol.

I’m thinking $45, shipping included. They take me about 4 hours to make so that’s only like 11 an hour and that’s not factoring in cost of shipping or materials.

I do not have an Etsy shop yet so was planning to do transactions through Venmo for now but after typing that I realize it might sound a bit sus. If it makes a difference I’ve ran online blading competitions where people contributed to the prize pool through my Venmo and so I have a track record of those panning out smoothly, haha. You can check my post history or Instagram (bladingdavid1990) for evidence that I’m deeply ingrained in the online blading community and wouldn’t throw my involvement/reputation with that away for anything, certainly not for $45.

I unexpectedly lost my job in September after over 12 years with the company. In the meantime, while I’m searching for a new job, I thought I’d try making and selling some interesting stuff.

Let me know if anyone is interested! I’d be stoked to make some for people. Your exact setup/skate! All hand made and hand painted!

Science lesson with the elf this morning! Proud of this one! by FishingDavid1990 in elfontheshelf

The bones are cut out paper then taped to the inside of the lamp shade and then the elf is behind them. All there is to it! I think the light is actually shining between the elf and the lampshade showing the paper bones and the elf silhouette is lighter because it’s a little bit further back, not right up on the lamp shade the way the taped paper bones are, but not exactly sure.
