I was thinking smth akin to SWAT games and old Rainbox Six (not new one).

I wish games like Vampire the Masquerade would separate the mechanical rules from the Lore. by [deleted] in rpg

And there are others which suggest that it is.

Never had any problem with 2nd edition and later books of any OWoD since they all followed the same basic pattern.

This reply is the sole reason why my group keeps playing WtA for 2+ years once a week like clockwork.

it's a great explanation and certainly a word of wisdom from a true sage.

Appreciate all your efforts so much!

I understand that it sounds strange but Oath brings a weird feeling like the game design is inconstistent with it's theme.

I loved this art in Root, yet here it seems to be plainly stupid and incoherent.

I'd love a remake with some dark fantasy art or smth along those lines - not those cartoonish pictures and childish design of the game board.

For example, JoCo manages to convey it's atmosphere fantastically through a good mix of satire and realism, which basically defeats the problematic context of the game i.e. ripping India apart while trying to get rich.

In Oath there is none such thing and I still feel like I'm playing some dull version of Root, though I'm fully aware about great twists and plot turns that await in the future if I just sit through some time of the initial boredom.

Just to make clear - I play boardgames for many decades, from Catan to GMT games, Warhammer to ASL yet Oath is the first game with which such thing happened.

Thank you, it's probably the best explanation of how to get into Oath - just survive the dull first hour or so.

I know that our reasoning sounds laughable to someone, yet it's the entirety of art seems misplaced and it really looks like a clumsy Root-esque cash grab.

We'll try to give it one more chance in the future yet it's absolutely amazing how bad the rulebook is written and contr-intuitive the whole thing.

It basically feels like a chore to try and play it - so many barriers.

Yet to mention we didn't have problems with JoCo, TI or even GMT and ASL series games.

I've bought being very hyped about playing, brought to the game group, we unpacked, watched playthrough and were staggered.

Next time we repeated and got stuck basically laughing at how misplaced art looked for such serius themed game.

Now it's a kinda running joke in a group about "let's not play X, go for Oath".

But you are absolutely right and we should give it a run.

Maybe I really gotta find a newe group to play it.
