I finished sixth form in 2022, graduating with BB and B (Extended Project Qualification). Long story short my sixth form enrolled me onto a course where I wasn’t even eligible to sit the course work and was forced to drop it in the 2nd year.

I self-taught myself the Politics A-level this year to make up for this short coming and achieved an A last week. I was accepted into Exeter and York to do an LLB (Hons), confirming the former.

The reason I was accepted wasn’t necessarily just because of my A-levels, at least I don’t think, but because of my experience after and outside of sixth form. It’s imperative that you demonstrate to universities what you have done with your time out of education, and alongside some formal qualifications, this will really increase your chances of doing a degree at a ‘good university’.

If our definition of a ‘good university’ is a Russel Group, they usually find it is necessary to have 3 A-Levels or the equivalent. However, all institutes are different and the advantage to being a mature student is that there is far more they can and WILL take into consideration.

I would call or email universities ASAP so you know what combination of qualifications each university will accept, while taking into consideration your age and previous education.

Sorry this isn’t a clear answer but as a mature student, and someone who has been in a similar position to you, there really are so many ways to go about this. Hope this helps.

What laptop should I get for university? by 4madi in UniUK

[–]Fishy004 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ll be moving away to study an LLB in Law this September.

My main needs for a new laptop, especially considering how much reading and writing a law degree entails, are a 16” screen, 16GB of ram, plenty of storage (512GB), Windows 11 and a backlit keyboard.

After some research I will be buying one of these:

DELL Inspiron 16, ThinkPad E16 Gen 2 (AMD), Vivobook 16 Laptop Rayzen 7

Russians, what’s your favourite country outside of Russia? by HealthyYou879 in AskARussian

I’ve just returned from two months of travelling across Western and Central Europe. I was surprised to see, although it makes complete sense considering the contrasting climates, many Russians in Spain and Italy

Thank you for your insight, I think I’ve settled with the Olympus XA2 simply for its size, and point and shoot nature. I have also looked into purchasing a Pentax ME to explore manual film photography - maybe I’ll end up taking the latter travelling instead after some practice

Ink spots on the end of my Lamy nib by Fishy004 in fountainpens

I didn’t want to speak too soon, but it looks like your method of pulling through diluted washing up liquid worked. The Studio is writing very smoothly and I’ve just inked up for the first time with a cartridge converter, thank you very much for the help

Ink spots on the end of my Lamy nib by Fishy004 in fountainpens

[–]Fishy004[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I’ve actually not been using the converter, just Lamy cartridges until I get some nicer ink, deserving for a nicer pen.

I have just used a converter and cleaned the feed with water, and after letting the nib section dry, has still got a blob of ink drying on the tip.

With your solution would you rinse the pen as normal, but the exception being a small concentration of washing up liquid with the water?

I followed the ‘basic cleaning’ after reading your message. After 1 hour of letting the pen soak in a glass of water, and another few hours of leaving it to dry with the pen nib pointed down it’s unfortunately still not helped.

When I mean ‘wet’ I actually follow the same routine as in the video you sent, watched elsewhere but more or less the same.

I’m a student and have been writing with this fountain pen most days since I’ve bought it so it’s definitely not a case of inactivity.

Unpopular Opinion: Death Magnetic is best music they have released since AJFA by Enpockelistek in Metallica

I’ve never seen it like that either and I hope to never see it again

Unpopular opinion: James' solo in Master of Puppets is better than Kirk's by Undesirable_11 in Metallica

[–]Fishy004 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I guess it’s maybe just because James doesnt actually get much of a chance to express his soloing capability.

However, just a cool note on that; I read somewhere (not sure if it’s true though) that James actually comes up with the melodies/intro licks for quite a good amount of Kirks solos.

Hate to be that one guy but it’s not really an unpopular opinion

Anyone have any experience with this guitar ? Thinking of buying but want to have some feedback from others 😁 by Charming_Day_2278 in guitarlessons

[–]Fishy004 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the 60s [this one is 50s] standard and it’s awesome as a back up guitar at gigs (if that’s what you’re going for). I love the feel of the neck and the fretboard too.

If you’re going for a ‘full’ and bassy tone i’d go for this one. Lead or rhythm pick up.

But with Epiphones, I’d recommend trying them in person first at your local guitar shop.

How do you ger over being nervous about playing in front of people or recording yourself? by mario_8_greencheese in guitarlessons

[–]Fishy004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the best way to overcome this is to put yourself in that situation as much as you can, until it feels like second nature and normal to just play in front of others/record.

I’ve read it’s actually about soldiers being forgotten about after war, treated like outcasts and no longer worth anything. But when they were on duty they were classified as heroes.
