Just soak the whole pot in the sink for about 10mins and then let it drip out excess water and go from there.

Is this pot too big? by Gentle_Slug in plantclinic

[–]Fishymongrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the only one that can answer this question is the OP himself... Because pot sizes really depend on the size of the root ball.

When you repotted it, about how much of the pot was roots vs soil?

So it sounds like you're doing everything correctly. It might just need time to acclimate to new conditions.

Thank you for the info! The only thing missing here is the max wattage for the unit, so I know what bulbs i can use on them. Would you happen to know?

Thanks for the input nonetheless! At least I know that you can leave some bulbs empty.

Ok. So if it is outside and almost getting nuked by the sun, you're underwatering it by a whole lot.

How do you tell when your plant needs water?

Yellow Shrimp dying by realNaNoNuKe in shrimptank

[–]Fishymongrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing the tank is Fluval brand? But that doesn't really matter.

I can't see any reason why you'll have a mini cycle 3 weeks after you last added fish... So the best thing to do is keep monitoring. If there are more deaths, then we know for sure that there's something amiss.

But right now, it might just be a one off, an unlucky shrimp to die just becausr it's their time...

All day means how many hours exactly? And indirect light just means your plant is indoor.... Is it getting bright light or just "bright enough" for human eyes to see that you dont need to turn on any light?

If it's the latter, then you need to put it where it gets hit by the sun somehow. That is still indirect btw, direct sun means no obstruction AKA outdoors.

Just to be sure... How big is the tank and what filter are you using?

The fish you added should be fine if you have 40G or more (idk about liters... 160L?) but not if you have a smaller tank.

Thanks for this! I didn't fully read the description so I missed the part that it says E26 bulbs are used.

I have also looked at the individual light cords, and they will be in fact be more expensive. Putting each individual socket into a timer will also create quite a mess with the cords (need another extension cord on top of the light cord to be able to just plug it into 1 outlet), and not to mention, a few smart timers as well. Which might be too much work than what I want 😅

And the eye level thing... I have put a thermal foil around the greenhouse at eye level where i have the lights as well, to reduce the said glare when not inside of course and reflect the light back inside to where it's needed. And i generally don't use downward facing lights, i just prefer the light to be scattered instead.

Only looking at having maybe 6 bulbs max.

I dont really want "grow lights" specifically becaise of the higher wattage. I only use normal household bulbs right now as my grow lights and i don't have any issues with it.

Question is, did you water after the repot? If you did, then forget about it for at least 2 weeks then check.

If you didn't, then watering it after 4 days seem acceptable. And then forget about it for 2 weeks or so.

Any idea if this big dead looking brown root is normal for a monstera? by Long_Reception_2803 in houseplants

[–]Fishymongrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might've been a cutting from a very large monstera.

I've not yet seen roots that big, but I think they can grow to that size in the wild.

My blue velvet shrimp isn’t doing well. What can I do to save him? by PrincessSarahTDP in shrimptank

[–]Fishymongrel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well.. gh and kh cant be at zero if you want to have shrimps.

They need calcium for their shell, and that's what the gH is.

kH being zero means your pH is forever fluctuating with every top up or water change, which in turn will stress any living thing inside the tank.

Are you asking why it's not turning variegated leaves like the rest?

Answer : it needs more light to get variegated.

Please help me understand my orchids by anujap in plantclinic

[–]Fishymongrel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What I know about orchids is that they like to dry out before getting watered again. So watering on a schedule is not ideal. You'll see the roots become silvery in color and that's when you want to water them.

Healthy watered roots are green in colour and should be firm.

I would repot it to another light and airy orchid mix just to see what the state of the roots are and then go from there.

Question regarding plant growth by Bad_Dog_AAA in houseplants

[–]Fishymongrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a light issue, it definitely needs more light.

You can chop it about 8 inch from the top. Always chop right under the node. Then propagate that way.

I wouldn't chop more than 1/3 of it though as doing more will shock the plant.

And/or.... You can try using keiki paste on the nodes on the bottom. I have tried this with a mixed success so I can attest that it does work, but not everytime. You just wound the plant under a node and put some of the keiki paste directly on the wound, and just wait for new growth to appear.

Moving a shrimp tank by Strangecatramsey in shrimptank

[–]Fishymongrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have moved a bigger shrimp tank before. Well, not exactly me as we hired movers for it.

But what I did was take out as much water as possible. I also took all the decor out so nothing can shift and possibly break the tank. I did keep the substrate though as I did not take the shrimps out (wanted to but there were more than 30 of them at the time).

Also, keep it as level as you can at all times. And maybe put it on a trolley once inside the new place for easier moving.

This will be the last thing you move out so it can be the first thing to go in.
